Gary Neville launches new campaign to save Britain's 50 worst football pitches
As a robust right-back and Sky Sports pundit, Gary Neville was never afraid to make his mark - but now he is taking on a new crusade to help save Britain's grassroots pitches from decay and neglect
Gary Neville has launched a major grassroots initiative to improve 50 of the worst pitches in Britain. The Manchester United legend is fronting a nationwide campaign to help Sunday league teams who play on lunar landscapes with barely-distinguishable line markings, or surfaces pockmarked by dogs ' mess and broken glass, to enjoy smarter, safer pitches.
Sky Sports pundit Neville threw his support behind the scheme because football's professional branches cannot flourish if the roots are decaying. The former England defender and part-owner of Salford City has been signed by optical giants Specsavers to head their Best Worst Pitch initiative - which will provide 50 clubs with line-painting and pitch maintenance equipment.
Neville, 50, said: 'Anyone who has played football at one point or another has played on a dodgy pitch. Grassroots football is the foundation of our sport and it's great to be a part of the Best Worst Pitch initiative supporting the communities and volunteers who make it possible.'
This weekend's FA Cup final and the all-English Europa League final in Bilbao will be played on pristine surfaces. But on the bottom rungs of the ladder, hard-up councils are stretched for financial resources to provide professional line-painting equipment, GPS mapping, pitch maintenance equipment and ground staff training.
Responsibility for maintaining pitches in public spaces often falls on volunteers - including pre-match 'sweeps' of the playing area to clear it of debris or canine calling cards.
Specsavers are long-standing investors in the grassroots community with their annual search to find Britain's 'best worst team'. Their current 'champions' are Somerset League strugglers Tunley Athletic, whose chairman Craig Doughty admitted: 'It's a real slog sometimes - every week, rain or shine, I'm out there doing two full laps of the pitch just to get the lines marked.
"The equipment we've got is ancient—it clogs, it leaks, and it takes twice as long as it should. On dark evenings or when the wind's howling, it feels like it takes forever. But I do it because I love this club—it means everything to the community.'
Where professional football was once played on pitches resembling Amazon swamps, or sandy beaches after the tide has gone out, most clubs in all four divisions enjoy billiard-table surfaces.
But further down the scale, obscure markings and uneven grass pitches are a major problem or even a health hazard. And clubs on the lowest steps of the pyramid cannot afford to install all-weather, low-maintenance 3G pitches.

Man Utd face Bryan Mbeumo fight as striker drops clear summer transfer hint
Manchester United have already made one major signing this summer, bringing in Matheus Cunha from Wolves, and plenty more incomings and outgoings are expected at Old Trafford Manchester United are set for a huge summer as they look to bounce back from their worst ever Premier League campaign. United finished 15th in the league last season and failed to qualify for the Champions League after they were beaten 1-0 in the Europa League final by Tottenham. Ruben Amorim has already strengthened his squad with the capture of Matheus Cunha from Wolves and plenty more incomings and outgoings are expected. Despite their poor season, United do have money to spend with CEO Omar Berrada stating earlier this year: "We speak to Ruben very frequently. "Ruben has a good relationship with Jason Wilcox. They both share the vision of how they want to see the team playing. It is about planning properly for the summer transfer window and having a clear idea of what players we want to bring in. "We're making some big efforts to get us in the best financial position. Even if we're outside of Europe - I think we will be in a position to invest in the squad." With that in mind, Mirror Football has taken a look at some of the latest transfer news and rumours from Old Trafford... Mbeumo fight United are hoping to sign Bryan Mbeumo this summer, but Tottenham look set to try and hijack the move. Brentford boss Thomas Frank is expected to replace Ange Postecoglou at Spurs and Mirror Football understands that he wants to bring Mbeumo with him to north London. United have held extensive talks with Mbeumo, but are yet to reach an agreement with Brentford. Although the Red Devils are ready to offer Mbeumo a more lucrative deal, the lure of Champions League football and continuing to work with Frank could tip the balance in Spurs' favour. Hojlund hint Rasmus Hojlund has been linked with a move to Inter Milan this summer, but the striker has insisted he is "fully dedicated" to United. Hojlund managed just 10 goals in 52 games across all competitions last season and reports have claimed that Inter are ready to offer him an escape route. However, when asked about his future while on international duty with Denmark, Hojlund said: "I have a contract until 2030, so I expect to play for Manchester United. "I'm looking forward to going on a summer vacation, and then I'm fully dedicated to the project that's underway. I know I can't get much out of reading things. I know what the facts are, and that is that I have a contract with Manchester United until 2030. I expect to play there, so I'm just getting ready for some summer vacation and then hopefully a good pre-season." Garnacho offered exit Mirror Football understands that Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr are interested in signing Alejandro Garnacho. Garnacho is expected to leave Old Trafford this summer and Al-Nassr have emerged as a potential destination, with the Argentine viewed as an alternative target to Luis Diaz after Liverpool made it clear they do not want to sell him. United have also had enquiries from Saudi Arabia about Jadon Sancho after Chelsea decided to pay a £5m penalty fee instead of signing him permanently after a loan spell at Stamford Bridge.

It feels like we're a group of mates – Skipper Harry Brook hails England unity
Brook has won five on the bounce against the West Indies since taking over from Jos Buttler, sweeping the tourists 3-0 in the ODI leg and going 2-0 up with one to play in the T20s. England did not have it easy in Sunday's four-wicket win at Bristol, with the asking rate climbing past 11 an over at one stage as they chased down a stiff target of 197. IT20 series win secured! 🔒 Victory in Bristol 🙌 Banton and Carse see us home 👏 Match Centre: — England Cricket (@englandcricket) June 8, 2025 But they stuck together to get over the line, with five of their top six making handy contributions before Jacob Bethell and Tom Banton took the bull by the horns. The middle-order duo hammered 56 off just 21 deliveries between them to puncture the West Indian resistance and keep the good times rolling for Brook. It was the kind of game England were losing in the difficult final days under Buttler, whose reign ended with eight straight defeats across both formats. But there is a new lighter feeling around the group – including the newly liberated former skipper, who has top-scored with 96 and 47 in the last two games. 'It feels like we're a group of mates. We're just going out and having fun,' said Brook. 'It's been nice for me. The results are awesome and we're really enjoying it. We're having a good time out there. 'At the end of games we go around the circle and Baz (head coach Brendon McCullum) asks if anybody has anything to say. In every game so far someone has stood up and said something. I think that's a great way of showing how the team is at the minute and we feel a proper togetherness.' The West Indies made England sweat at times, taking 82 off their last five overs including an unexpected tirade against Adil Rashid in the 19th. For so long the team's most bankable bowler, the leg-spinner shipped five sixes and 31 runs in what goes down as the second most expensive over by an English bowler in T20s. Stuart Broad holds the unwanted record of 36, taken for six off every ball by Yuvraj Singh at the 2007 World Cup. Brook, though, insists he and his team were never rattled. 'I'm always very chilled. We knew that there was going to be one, two, maybe three big overs,' he said. From a different angle 📐 All 25 of our boundaries! 💥#ENGvWI | #EnglandCricket — England Cricket (@englandcricket) June 8, 2025 'On a pitch that size, with 60-metre boundaries nearly all the way around, we accepted that before the game and we knew we could get big overs as well. 'The way Bants went about his business, getting 30 off 11 balls having never really batted in the middle order before was just awesome.' The West Indies have one more chance to avoid a winless tour in Southampton on Tuesday but head coach Daren Sammy paid tribute to Akeal Hosein, who took the field just six hours after arriving from the Caribbean following visa delays. 'He said to me, 'there's no way I'm not playing',' Sammy explained. 'Kudos to him, he turned up for us. An eight-hour flight straight into a game is not ideal but it shows his commitment.'

Man Utd to earn 'substantial' windfall for player sold less than 12 months ago
Manchester United's Profit and Sustainability concerns are set to be eased with one of their former academy players expected to be on the move this summer, just a year ater leaving the Red Devils Manchester United are set to earn a substantial transfer windfall thanks to former star Maxi Oyedele. The United academy graduate left the Red Devils a year ago for Legia Warsaw, having never played a senior game at Old Trafford. But he has starred in Poland, making 24 appearances in all competitions as Legia won the Polish Cup. That was their first major trophy since 2023, with Oyedele playing all 90 minutes of the final. Though he only joined last summer and has two years to run on his contract, the midfielder is attracting strong interest. Werder Bremen, PSV Eindhoven, Anderlecht, Club Brugge and a number of Championship sides are understood to be monitoring the 20-year-old. There is a release clause in his contract that means he is available for a tick over £5million this summer. There is a growing expectation at Legia that he will be departing the club after just one season. If he does indeed move on, it would bank United a healthy sum, which will go a way towards easing their concerns with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability rules. The Red Devils are hoping to be busy this summer and any fee received will be greatly appreciated. In a surprise move given he left just 12 months ago, United will benefit substantially from Oyedele's potential transfer. When they sold him last summer, United inserted various clauses into the deal. While they only sold him for a small fee, one of the clauses they inserted was a substantial sell-on clause to ensure future profit. That sell-on clause means that United are entitled to 40 per cent of any fee Legia receive for the midfielder. If he is sold for his release clause, it would see United bank just over £2m. That money would likely go straight into easing their PSR concerns, with a buy-back option also included in the original deal. A departure for Oyedele would come as somewhat of a surprise given his short time in Poland. Speaking in April, the youngster insisted he was happy with life in the capital city. 'It's just funny for my mum because she left Poland to come to England and make a life; I left England to go to Poland to start my journey,' Oyedele told The Guardian. 'Legia was the biggest opportunity. "I don't even think I realised how big of an opportunity it was when I heard about it. I felt like this was the opportunity to play in Europe, the biggest team in Poland. It's my nationality, so it's close to the national team. "It's always a risk to leave it, but it just seemed like the best choice. I couldn't afford to waste another year playing academy football. I could have stayed in England and continued my journey and who knows what would have happened."
