The 4,294.05sqm plot was auctioned by NMC for Rs80 crore under the Smart City project.NMC officials from Laxmi Nagar zone, supported by police personnel, executed the drive by evicting vendors near the mutton market and installing iron railings along the footpath to prevent re-encroachment.Local BJP leader Surendra Pande, who was present during the drive, strongly opposed the selective action.
He demanded that NMC also act against hardware shops, builders, and godowns that encroached roads and footpaths. "Why target only poor hawkers with licences? Large-scale encroachments by traders are ignored despite multiple complaints," he said.Vendors said the action was unjust. "We were selling seasonal fruits and meat here for years. Some of us even have hawker licences. Now we are being displaced without alternative arrangements," said Mohammad Naseem, a meat vendor.Residents and social activists echoed the concern, alleging that stalls used tarpaulins for sun protection and not for permanent occupation. "These carts cost around Rs15,000 and are the only source of livelihood for many. Demolishing them with JCBs is harsh," said one of the residents. Residents, along with Pandey, also raised objections against the developer of the project for encroaching on the footpath with a tin shed.Praful Deshmukh, the developer, clarified that a 1.5-metre strip on the 3.5-metre-wide footpath would remain for pedestrians, and the rest would be barricaded temporarily to ensure the plot is kept construction-ready. "The evicted vendors were assured of alternative space once the new market is built under the redevelopment plan," he claimed.

Delhi Cabinet Approves Ordinance to Regulate Private School Fees

New Delhi: In a significant move aimed at protecting parents from arbitrary fee hikes, the Delhi Cabinet on Monday approved the Delhi School Education (Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees) Ordinance, 2025. The decision was taken during the government's 8th cabinet meeting held at the Secretariat. Announcing the decision at a press conference, Delhi's Education Minister Ashish Sood said the ordinance is designed to rein in exploitative fee collection practices by private schools and bring long-awaited financial relief to parents. 'In the last 100 days, every cabinet meeting under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta's leadership has resulted in key decisions in public interest,' Sood stated. 'Today's approval is a major step towards ensuring transparency and fairness in school fee structures.' The ordinance, once enacted, will prohibit private schools from arbitrarily increasing fees and is expected to directly impact over 1,600 private schools in the capital. It will take effect retroactively from April 1, 2025, following the President's assent. This means parents who were compelled to pay steep fees earlier this academic year may be eligible for relief. Sood added that the ordinance will be sent to the Lieutenant Governor, who will forward it to the President of India for approval. 'This is a historic day for Delhi's middle-class families,' said Sood. 'For years, under the previous AAP government, parents were burdened by unchecked fee hikes. The BJP government is now taking a decisive step to end this injustice.' He also highlighted that this is the first major education-related legislative initiative by a BJP-led government in Delhi in nearly three decades. Framing the move as part of the broader vision of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas,' Sood emphasized the government's commitment to transparent and citizen-centric enacted, the ordinance will serve as a regulatory framework for Delhi's 1,677 private schools, ensuring that fee hikes are justified, accountable, and in line with parents' expectations.

Ordinance to curb fee hike in private schools cleared by Delhi Cabinet

The Delhi Cabinet on Tuesday approved the Ordinance aimed at curbing arbitrary fee hikes in private schools — a move that the government says will bring long-awaited relief to lakhs of students and their families in the Capital. 'The Ordinance will curb arbitrary fee collection by private schools. The previous governments did nothing to check exploitative hikes by these schools,' Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood said at a press conference. The Ordinance, titled 'The Delhi School Education (Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees) Ordinance 2025,' was approved during the eighth meeting of the Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday. The government had earlier prepared a draft of the Bill, which was due to be presented in May in the Assembly during the second half of the Budget session. However, the session was later cancelled. Once enacted, following President Droupadi Murmu's nod, the Ordinance will prevent private schools from raising fees without oversight and will apply retroactively from April 1 this year, the government said.'This retrospective provision will especially benefit those parents who were pressured into paying exorbitant and unjustified fees,' Sood said. He described the Ordinance as a 'major move towards ending financial exploitation of hardworking parents and ensuring greater transparency in the education system'. This is the first major education-related law that the Delhi government has pursued in nearly 27 years, the ruling party claimed. 'Today's decision stands out as a major step towards ending exploitative fee collection practices by private schools,' the government said. The move, said Sood, is aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas' (development for all). The Minister promised that the Ordinance would 'secure the future of children studying in private schools.' The Education Minister was critical of the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) administration, accusing it of failing to check fee exploitation. 'During the tenure of previous governments, particularly the AAP, parents of children studying in private schools were repeatedly subjected to financial exploitation,' Sood said. 'Today, the BJP government in Delhi has taken a landmark decision to end this longstanding injustice,' he added. Earlier, the AAP too had criticised the BJP government for failing to check fee hikes after the party came to power in February. Once implemented, the Ordinance is expected to apply to all 1,677 private schools in Delhi, according to the Education Minister. 'This is a historic day for Delhi's middle-class families,' he added.

Stampede: BJP to launch campaign against Congress govt. involving victims' families; seeks CM and Dy. CM's resignation

The Opposition BJP has decided to launch a State-wide protest campaign against the Congress government by involving the family members of those who lost their lives in the stampede at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium during the RCB victory celebrations. The party has also demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on moral grounds. As part of the campaign, the BJP has decided to hold a protest against the alleged failure of the government, at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on June 13. BJP State president B.Y. Vijayendra said the family members of the victims, as well as those pained by the tragedy, would participate in the protest along with party workers in the city. Accusing the government of bungling the felicitation programme preparations, he maintained that the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister should be considered as 'accused-1 and accused-2', respectively, in this case, while Home Minister G. Parameshwara should be 'accused-3'. Alleging that the political tussle between the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister resulted in the stampede, he said while the Chief Minister wanted to hog the limelight by holding a felicitation programme in front of the Vidhana Soudha, the Deputy Chief Minister had tried to get credit by visiting the stadium where a grand programme was held. Open letter Mr. Vijayendra also sent an open letter to the Chief Minister, demanding that both he and the Deputy Chief Minister quit, taking moral responsibility for the incident. He alleged that the Chief Minister had decided to go ahead with the felicitation programme by heeding the advice of his 'sycophant aides' who wanted to please him by creating an opportunity for him to bask in the glory of the RCB's IPL victory. Meanwhile, Leaders of the Opposition in both Houses of the legislature R. Ashok and Chalavadi Narayanaswamy visited the house of Bhoomik, who died in the stampede, in Hassan and tried to console his father.
