Barcelona seeking La Liga match in Miami in December

FOOTBALL powerhouse Barcelona moved a step closer on Monday to playing a LaLiga match against Villarreal CF in Miami this season.
The Spanish football federation (RFEF) approved a request from both clubs to move forward with planning the first overseas contest in the history of Spain's top flight.
The Villarreal-Barcelona game is scheduled for the weekend of Dec. 20, 2025. Both teams asked for the match to be moved from Villarreal's Estadio de La Ceramica to Miami's Hard Rock Stadium.
"After receiving and reviewing the paperwork received, and after the approval of the board, the RFEF will pass on the request to UEFA to begin the procedures for FIFA's prior authorisation of the game at Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, on December 20 2025, in accordance with FIFA's international game regulations and the applicable rules approved by the RFEF," the RFEF said in a statement Monday, per ESPN.
The other federations involved – U.S. Soccer Federation, Fifa, UEFA and Concacaf – would still need to sign off on the match.

Barcelona cruise past nine-man Mallorca in Liga opener

BARCELONA kicked off their La Liga title defence with a comfortable 3-0 victory over nine-man Mallorca on Saturday. The visitors took an early lead after just seven minutes through Raphinha's header from Lamine Yamal's cross. Yamal was involved again as Ferran Torres doubled Barcelona's advantage in the 23rd minute. Mallorca's frustrations grew when Manu Morlanes was sent off for a second yellow card after a foul on Yamal. Vedat Muriqi followed Morlanes with a straight red for a high boot on debutant goalkeeper Joan Garcia. Despite the numerical advantage, Barcelona coach Hansi Flick was unimpressed with his team's second-half performance. 'They're three important points, but I didn't like the match,' Flick told Movistar. 'After going two goals up and following Mallorca's two red cards, I think the team only gave 50 percent and I didn't like that.' Marcus Rashford made his La Liga debut as a second-half substitute after his loan move was finalised on Saturday morning. Yamal capped off the win with a stunning solo goal in stoppage time, curling a left-footed strike into the top corner. 'He surprises you every day. He's a spectacular player,' Flick said of the 16-year-old. Elsewhere, Valencia drew 1-1 with Real Sociedad, while Alaves snatched a late 2-1 win over Levante. Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid begin their campaigns on Sunday and Tuesday respectively. - AFP

Penalty heartbreak for Kuching as Brunei seize first leg advantage in FA Cup tie

The hosts made a dream start when Indonesian forward Ramadhan Sananta slid a defence-splitting pass for skipper Azwan Ali Rahman, who coolly slotted past goalkeeper Haziq Nadzli in the fifth minute. That early strike jolted Kuching into life, and they gradually took control of the contest. Their pressure finally paid off in the 42nd minute when Timor Leste winger Joao Pedro burst down the right and squared for Cameroonian striker Ronald Ngah, who tapped in the equaliser. Two minutes into the second half, Kuching went ahead through Nigerian defender James Okwuosa, who capitalised on a defensive lapse to score from close range. But the advantage lasted less than a minute. Brunei hit back instantly as Portuguese winger Miguel Oliveira collected a long ball from Nazirrudin Haji Ismail, weaved past two defenders and slotted home to make it 2-2. The hosts regained the lead in the 78th minute when substitute Australian striker Jordan Murray punished Okwuosa's slip with a composed finish. Kuching were handed a lifeline almost immediately when Fairuz Zakaria fouled Alif Hassan in the box. After a lengthy six-minute VAR review, a penalty was awarded — but substitute Gabriel Nistelrooy saw his effort brilliantly saved by Brunei's North Macedonian goalkeeper Kristijan Naumovski. The crucial stop ensured Brunei take a slender one-goal advantage into the second leg. Meanwhile, in Iskandar Puteri, defending champions Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) flexed their muscles with a 5-0 rout of UM-Damansara at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium. Argentinian wingback Jonathan Silva struck twice in the 44th and 54th minutes, before Spanish forward Teto Martin (78th), national striker Joao Figueiredo (90th), and Spanish winger Celso Bermejo (91st) completed the emphatic win.
