Uproar over 'embarrassing' detail as Alex Johnston edges closer to try-scoring record
Johnston scored the 210th try of his career on Thursday night as Souths thrashed the Dragons 40-0. It put him just two tries short of Ken Irvine's all-time mark of 212 that has stood since 1973.
With the Rabbitohs on the bye next week, Johnston would need two tries to tie Irvine's record in the final round of the season - or a hat-trick to break it - if the historic moment is to occur this year. But Thursday night's moment was soured by controversy after the Rabbitohs got away with a clear forward pass.
Tallis Duncan's final pass to Johnston was blatantly forward to the naked eye, but the referee and touch-judge missed it. Crucially, the touchie wasn't in line with the pass as they'd dropped back to get a good look at a potential put-down in the corner.
Speaking in commentary for Fox League at the time, Warren Smith was gobsmacked the try was allowed. And Bennett said in his post-match press conference: 'I don't think the ref was game to take it off him to be honest with you. Yeah it was marginal that pass.'
Dragons coach Shane Flanagan refused to blame some questionable calls for his team's loss, but captain Damien Cook said: 'I know it didn't decide the result, but it looked pretty blatant." He told a journo: "You've been an expert for a long time and I reckon you're right."
NRL fans blast 'embarrassing' moment
The forward pass led to Souths taking a 16-0 lead, and there was more controversy when the Rabbitohs avoided having a player sent to the sin-bin for a professional foul after a Dragons line-break. Commentator Michael Ennis labelled it an "awful" call from Gerard Sutton not to use the sin-bin.
On social media, Dragons fans were incredulous. One person wrote: "Wouldn't that be embarrassing if Kenny Irvine's record goes off a forward pass." Another added: "Terrible forward pass not called in the Dragons vs Rabbitohs game for a try."
While a third added: "Missed 2m forward pass leads to a try. A sin bin every day of the week not given. And the NRL probably wondering why there's 200 people in the crowd."

Bennett played down the significance of the milestone should Johnston reach it against arch-rivals the Roosters in Round 27. "I don't know why you're making such a fuss about it, to be honest," he told a journo.
"It's there, it's not broken. The day it is, it'll be a great moment. But no one can predict when and where. So what, are we going to live the rest of our lives until it happens as, 'What's Alex going to do?' Let's just get on with our lives. That's what he's doing. It'll come and we'll all celebrate it."
The depleted Dragons are now officially out of finals contention after only being a mathematical chance heading into the game. "Souths had a shorter turnaround than us, they've got injuries (as well), so we're not tossing up any excuses," Flanagan said.
"If I start tossing up excuses, then I become one of the weak ones. The opposition didn't give us a chance to breathe. They were outstanding with the football. We were the opposite."

'Spying' drama erupts as Fremantle figure kicked out of Western Bulldogs training
There were bizarre scenes at Western Bulldogs training on Friday when retired AFL cult hero Sam Naismith and a companion were asked to leave the session. Journalists at Whitton Oval captured the moment on camera that Naismith and a friend were seemingly caught 'spying' on the Bulldogs. Naismith played for Richmond and the Sydney Swans before retiring at the end of 2024, and is now the Fremantle Dockers' ruck coach. The seventh-placed Dockers play the Bulldogs (eighth) on Sunday afternoon, with the winner securing their spot in the AFL finals. With that in mind, Naismith's presence at Bulldogs training on Friday raised a few eyebrows. The 206cm former ruckman was spotted sitting in the fourth row of the stands, and the Bulldogs' media team was made aware of his presence about 30 minutes into the session. Bulldogs assistant coach Daniel Pratt was then seen asking Naismith and his companion to leave. Naismith was dressed all in black with a cap on, but didn't exactly try to hide his giant frame. Naismith played 30 games at AFL level for the Swans from 2014 to 2022, and just three for the Tigers last year in a season interrupted by an ACL injury. After announcing his retirement, he joined the Dockers as their ruck and development coach. The fact it was the 206cm Naismith suggests it wasn't a genuine attempt at spying. Journalists at the ground described it as "funny" and "amusing" rather than nefarious. Speaking earlier this week, Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir insisted the pressure was all on the Bulldogs ahead of the do-or-die clash. The Dockers are four points ahead of the Bulldogs with one game remaining, but the ninth-placed Suns are level with the Dogs on 56 points. Crucially, Gold Coast will play two games over the next seven days because their clash with Essendon was postponed from earlier in the year. It means the Suns have two games in hand to try and make the finals, and the loser of the Dockers and Bulldogs is a chance to miss out. Panthers hero tipped to land at Titans as Fifita poised for move to Sydney NRL club
Scott Sattler is reportedly being 'targeted' for a role in the Gold Coast Titans' front-office, in a move that could help turn around the NRL cellar-dwellers. And it could actually pave the way for Titans forward David Fifita to move to South Sydney this off-season. The Titans seem destined to get the wooden spoon in 2025, with Des Hasler's side sitting last with three rounds remaining. Titans officials have declared Hasler will remain coach in 2026, but there's increasing speculation he won't. On Friday, leading journalist David Riccio revealed the struggling club is eyeing Panthers premiership hero Sattler for a managerial role. As well as playing 118 games for the Panthers and captaining them to the 2003 premiership, Sattler also played 54 games for Gold Coast and debuted for the club when they were known as the Seagulls in 1992. He also played for the South Queensland Crushers and Gold Coast Chargers, and has a strong affiliation with the area. In 2006 he was appointed as the Titans' football manager and held the role until 2008. Riccio revealed on SEN radio on Friday: "I think we all believe there's going to be movement at the Titans around their head coach Des Hasler, but it's my understanding they're going to target Scott Sattler. Scott was the inaugural football manager when the Titans first came into the comp and was part of the only finals campaign of the Gold Coast Chargers (as a player). "There's a deep affinity with Gold Coast rugby league in the Sattler family. It's my understanding that Scott will be targeted to be the Titans' new GM of football, or a very senior football management role, to be part of what I believe will be a massive overhaul. I firmly believe this will develop into the next two to three weeks." Scott Sattler would be big get for Gold Coast Titans The news about Sattler comes amid reports Hasler has asked the Queensland Rugby League for assistance in staving off poaching rivals of junior Gold Coast talent from rival clubs. Sattler would no doubt be able to play a role in recruiting and retaining youngsters. If Sattler does join the Titans in coming weeks, one of his first decisions might be whether the club keeps Fifita or lets him walk. The former State of Origin star has only played eight games in 2025, and has undergone season-ending ankle surgery. The 25-year-old is under contract until the end of 2026, but is reportedly eyeing an early exit to join the Rabbitohs next year. Earlier this week, Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett admitted he's definitely interested in signing Fifita if he's released from the Titans early. Scott Sattler believes change could be good for David Fifita And tellingly, it was Sattler on SEN radio this week who declared Bennett might be the perfect coach to get Fifita's career back on track. "I've always believed that the age of 26 is when most players just start to get it," he said. "The mind and body start to connect better and most people start playing their best footy consistently. "I've said openly that I think a change for David Fifita would be a good one. To go to Wayne Bennett at the age of 25 - turning 26 in February - it's all about timing. After this third ankle surgery, it could be the right timing for South Sydney and the Titans. The ball is in David Fifita's court because he's still under contract." 'Souths' salary cap is super tight. They don't have the scope to accommodate David Fifita at full freight," he said. 'So, whether or not the Titans would be willing to chip in, and what is David Fifita worth on the open market now? We know Wayne loves to take a chance on players. I don't know whether he is the player they need at South Sydney. 'But if you've got Keaon (Koloamatangi) back to the middle and Fifita on an edge, it would make them stronger. But they need to get him at a super cut-price.'
