Germany prepared for Poland and Pajor as their Euro 2025 bid begins

ST GALLEN, Switzerland :Germany will look to carry their excellent Nations League form into the Women's European Championship and, while not taking their opening game against Poland lightly, manager Christian Wuck believes his side know exactly how to get the win. The Germans are the most successful country in the tournament - eight-time winners, and runners-up in the last edition - and they kick off their Euro bid against a Poland team taking part in their first major tournament. Poland do have an ace up their sleeve but one the Germans are very familiar with. Striker Ewa Pajor spent nine seasons at VfL Wolfsburg, before joining Barcelona last season, where she scored 43 goals in 45 games. "From the very beginning, I've said that everyone who has qualified here has the opportunity to get through the group stage," Wuck told reporters ahead of Friday's clash. "And the Polish players, just like us, have a high level of individual quality. Ewa Pajor certainly stands out but there are also others that we have discussed internally. "We know that we have to push ourselves to the limit, just like in any other game, in order to be successful." Germany were very impressive in this year's Nations League, topping their group unbeaten and netting 26 goals, with five wins from six including a 4-0 victory over the Netherlands. "I believe that if we play like we did in the Nations League, with a focus on scoring goals, but also with an emphasis on the goals conceded ratio, we are well equipped to prevent a quick goal against us and to leave the field as winners," Wuck said. Now, the focus is on Poland, and the manager has his squad completely prepared for the task ahead. "We point out what the strengths are but also the weaknesses of the opposing system," Wuck said. "We show them where spaces are created that we want to exploit, how we want to act against the individual quality.

Denmark boss Jeglertz to take over Man City after Women's Euros

Manchester City announced on Thursday that Denmark coach Andree Jeglertz would take over as their manager after the Women's Euros in Switzerland. Jeglertz, who will lead his team in their Group C opener against Sweden in Geneva on Friday, has signed a four-year deal to take the helm at City, who finished fourth in the Women's Super League (WSL) last term and parted company with previous coach Gareth Taylor in March. 'Manchester City is one of the biggest clubs in the world. There is so much talent in this group. One of my key things is to continue the job that's been done and take it to the next level," Jeglertz said in a statement issued by the club. 'We would like to win, develop players and want the players every day to become better. I will do everything I can to take this to the next level and make sure we can play attractive and winning football.' City Director of Football Therese Sjogran, welcomed her Swedish compatriot to the club, saying: 'Andree brings a wealth of experience at the top of the game as well as a real hunger to drive Manchester City forward. "We wish him luck at the Euros... with Denmark and are all very excited to see what impact he can make in our bright future.'

Tributes pour in for Jota as players at Women's Euros mourn Portugal forward

BERN, Switzerland :Portugal players were heartbroken ahead of their Women's Euro 2025 game against Spain on Thursday where a minute's silence will be observed following the death of Portuguese national men's team striker Diogo Jota in a car accident. "One of our own," Portugal forward Jessica Silva posted on Instagram. "Diogo wasn't just a star. It was the good, the faithful, the attentive, the simple ... of those who don't need noise to mark their presence! "Football has gone poorer ... and so are we. You will never be forgotten." UEFA announced that a moment of silence will be observed at all of Thursday and Friday's Euro matches "in memory of Portugal international and Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva who tragically passed away today," European soccer's governing body said on Thursday. England defender Lucy Bronze said she and her teammates were shocked when they woke up in Zurich to the news. "Obviously, we've got a lot of Liverpool fans in our team, but just football fans and people in general," Bronze said at England's base camp. "It's so sad to hear, both him and his brother, and so young as well, everyone was just thinking of them this morning. "Seeing all the messages on social media, you see what a great guy he seemed to have been as well. So just really sad and really shocked by the news." HEART EMOJIS Hours before kick-off, virtually every player on the Portugal women's squad had posted photos of Jota on social media, many with broken heart emojis. Veteran defender Ana Borges, who is the most capped player in the women's national team's history, wrote "Descansem em paz" - rest in peace - under a photo of both brothers. FPF President Pedro Proenca gave a brief statement in Bern saying 28-year-old Jota was "Much more than a fantastic player. "With almost 50 appearances for the National A Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all his teammates and opponents, someone with a contagious joy and a reference in his own community," Proenca said. Portugal and Spain are set to meet in Bern at 2100 CET (1900 GMT) in their first Group B game. "We'll be watching the games tonight, and in England too I think everyone at the tournament will be supporting the Portuguese team, because I know they'll be a lot closer to this than we are," Bronze said. "It's just a real sad moment for everybody involved in football. What an amazing year he's had as well, not just for Liverpool, but obviously he's got married a couple of weeks ago, got little kids, it's just so sad."
