Artists protest, urge govt to reopen Rabindra Bhawan shut for three years
1 2 3 4 Guwahati: Several artists on Friday staged a protest outside Rabindra Bhawan near Dighalipukhuri demanding the reopening of the iconic venue. The demonstration, marked by placards and impromptu performances, was seen as a message against what many called the state's neglect of art and heritage. The unavailability of Rabindra Bhawan's auditorium, which has been closed for three years for renovation work, has given theatre aficionados a tough time, as there is no recreational space for them to practice their art. Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while talking to the media on Friday assured that work is underway and the venue will be reopened soon for the artists. Rabindra Bhawan is under the state cultural affairs department and operated smoothly until 2018. Though briefly reopened in 2022, it was shut again due to water seepage problems and has remained closed since. Himangshu Prasad Das, a theatre practitioner, said, "There is no anternative for us. I have been performing in Rabindra Bhawan since 2022, and now we are struggling to find a space. Although, there is Srimanta Sankardev auditorium in Kalakshetra, but they will only provide space if we pay for it, and the rents has soared over the years -- Rs 30-35,000 – which many artists can't afford," Another artist Naren Patgiri, while speaking to media, said, "A part of Rabindra Bhawan should be reopened for artists. Eminent personalities like Satya Prasad Baruah, Rudra Baruah, and Mahendra Barthakur emerged from this very space. Even we have been performing here for years. This place has nurtured generations of artists, and we hope the upcoming generation also gets the same opportunity to grow and shine. That's why we urge the state govt to complete the renovation work within six months and reopen the place. It is a public property, and if the govt truly values art and culture, it must act accordingly."
