
China's Tianlong-3 rocket passes critical stress test a year after explosive mishap
crashed during a test, Beijing-based start-up
Space Pioneer has redesigned the vehicle and shown that it can withstand the intense forces of launch.
In a recent ground-based test in central China, the company used the rocket's nine-engine first stage – which produces nearly 900 tonnes of thrust combined – to simulate key mission phases, including fuelling, lift-off, flight and recovery.
The structure held up under all test conditions, the company said on its social media account on Friday.

On June 30 last year, the company conducted a static-fire test with the first stage of its new Tianlong-3 rocket in Gongyi, a city of about 800,000 people in Henan province.
The rocket was supposed to remain anchored during the test, but instead lifted off unexpectedly and crashed in a hilly area nearby, creating a massive fireball that was captured on video by onlookers.
While Space Pioneer had previously blamed the crash on a '
structural failure between the rocket and the test stand', it has since added that the incident was the direct result of the weak design of the rocket's tail section.
Space Pioneer said the rocket's tail section – where all nine engines are mounted – must endure enormous stress during ignition. It also has to handle a wide range of forces throughout the mission, from standing upright in high winds and bearing the rocket's full weight to the shaking and bending of ascent, and the impact of landing during reuse.

That incredible stamina comes from a 94.8kWh battery that offers 30 per cent more energy. The new BMW iX xDrive45 also brings the looks. Showing off minimalist lines, it features a redesigned BMW kidney grille at the front, frameless glass doors and body-coloured lower trim at the sides, and a seamless rear. An innovative layout, with the battery deep in the floor and the drive units on the axles, makes for a generous cabin, which also features seats with heat and massage functions. Authorities in China's southern tech hub of Shenzhen have called for leniency towards innovators whose government-funded projects fail or do not pass evaluation. Advertisement The first policy statement of its kind from the Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Commission comes as China aims to cement the city's status as a hi-tech powerhouse and reduce reliance on foreign technology amid a sustained strategic rivalry with the United States. The new rules applied to all universities, hospitals and companies that undertake technical innovation with government financial aid, the commission said in a statement on its website last Monday. It said that if the mistakes did not involve misconduct, there was no abuse of power and the innovators took reasonable actions to correct the errors, then they should not be punished. The statement further listed scenarios where such exemptions could be made, such as goals stalled due to technical difficulties, products developed but rendered unviable due to market changes, or research remaining incomplete because of the need to explore new mechanisms, methods, models or technologies. They should not be hindered from applying for government-funded scientific and technological projects again,' the document said. Nasa takes closest-ever images of the sun
United States space agency Nasa released new images captured by its Parker Solar Probe. The unpiloted device explores space and gathers information. It began approaching the sun on December 24, getting as close as 6.1 million kilometres (3.8 million miles) to the solar surface, the agency said. It added that the images, released on July 10, were taken 'closer to the sun than we've ever been before'. The Parker Solar Probe is about the size of a small car. It was launched in 2018. In 2021, it became the first spacecraft to enter the sun's atmosphere. The new data will help scientists predict weather in space. Those predictions can be used to improve astronauts' safety and protect technology on Earth and in the solar system.
