Google offers to modify policy on gaming apps to avoid CCI probe

Google LLC has proposed to modify its policies for hosting real-money gaming (RMG) apps on the Play Store in India, aiming to avoid an antitrust investigation by the Competition Commission of India (CCI). The regulator is now inviting public comments on the tech giant's offer. The proposal comes after CCI initiated a probe in November 2024 based on a complaint by WinZO Games, a skill-based RMG platform. At the time, the watchdog had found preliminary evidence suggesting Google may have violated Indian competition laws by favouring just two types of games—Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) and Rummy—under a selective pilot programme, while keeping other skill-based games off the platform. Under the new "Play Commitment Proposal", Google has agreed to scrap the limited pilot and allow all skill-based real-money games that are self-declared by developers as permissible under Indian laws and jurisprudence. These apps will be allowed to distribute on the Play Store in India once the Commission approves the proposal. Once the proposal is approved, Google will implement the change within 120 days, the CCI said. 'Google will replace the current Pilot Program by allowing the distribution of all real money games self-declared by developers as permissible online real money games as per applicable laws/jurisprudence, on Google Play in India,' CCI stated. Google submitted the proposal on behalf of itself and other related parties including parent company Alphabet Inc. and two Indian affiliates. The proposal was made under a CCI mechanism that allows companies under investigation to voluntarily correct their conduct and avoid litigation. The CCI also flagged Google's ad policy, which previously allowed promotions only for DFS and Rummy. In response, Google has offered to revise its advertising policy as well, opening the door for all games of skill to advertise. In a statement to Mint, a Google spokesperson said: 'We're pleased the CCI is market testing our proposed framework for real-money games in India. This development reflects our constructive discussions with the CCI and the Indian developer community... and our commitment to building a more open and safe ecosystem.' Queries sent to WinZO on Wednesday seeking comments for the story remained unanswered at the time of publishing. CCI will accept comments till 20 August.

'He Always Wanted Me To Be GM': Divya Deshmukh's Touching Tribute To First Coach

Last Updated: Upon her return to Nagpur, Deshmukh dedicated her FIDE Women's World Cup title to the late Rahul Joshi, her first chess trainer. Indian teenage sensation Divya Deshmukh enjoyed a victorious homecoming on Wednesday as the 19-year-old made her return to India following her heroics in Batumi, Georgia, as the Nagpur-based genius clinched the coveted FIDE Women's World Cup title against compatriot Humpy Koneru. Deshmukh, who was extended a hero's welcome in Nagpur, commemorated the moment by paying tribute to the late Rahul Joshi, her first chess trainer. Joshi, who initially trained the wunderkind, unfortunately passed away at the tender age of just 40 years of age and Deshmukh made it a point to show her appreciation for her following her historic triumph. 'He always wanted me to be a GM. I dedicate my GM title to him," Deshmukh said. view comments First Published: July 31, 2025, 08:13 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. India Given 30-Overs-Old Replacement Ball After 10 Overs At Lord's? Team Officials Approach ICC Referee

Last Updated: Indian officials claim England received preferential treatment in choosing match balls, arguing a crucial replacement ball at Lord's was 30-35 overs old. In yet another major controversy, Indian team officials have reportedly raised their concerns with the ICC referee claiming England have been given preferential treatment in choosing match balls on the ongoing tour. India have also claimed that during a crucial juncture of the Lord's Test when the ball went out of shape, the replacement that was provided to the visiting team was 30-35 overs old and it proved to be a game-changer. India had England on the ropes with Jasprit Bumrah picking up three wickets in 14 deliveries including that of Ben Stokes, Joe Root and Chris Woakes in the first innings of the 3rd Test. But the ball went out of shape after just 10 overs and India asked for it to be changed. As per the ICC protocol, the replacement ball should also have been 10 overs old. However, it wasn't the case. From 271/7, England ended up with 355-all out with Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse hitting half-centuries and India eventually lost the contest by 22 runs on the final day. 'At Lord's, after about 10 overs, the Dukes ball lost its shape, something that has been happening so often in the series. The ball failed to pass through the rings that the umpires carry on the field to check if the ball is uniformly spherical. However, the umpires didn't have a ball that was 10 overs old, so the Indian team at a crucial moment of the match got a ball that was 30-35 overs old," The Indian Express quoted an Indian team official as saying. 'Check the scoreboard to see how the game changed after that. The bowlers lost their swing and England scored with ease," the official added. India have also called for a change in the ICC rules as the teams aren't told about the age of the replacement ball. 'When you ask for a ball change, you aren't told about the age of the replacement you will be getting. At Lord's, we weren't told that the replacement would be 30 to 35 overs old. If we were told, we would have continued with the deformed ball that was used for 10 overs. The ICC needs to intervene. This rule needs to be changed," he said. Preferential Treatment To England? As per the report, among the balls that have been in use for the ongoing series, the one with the darker shade of red have swung more. However, the official claims that at times, the fourth umpire has brought a box to the Indian dressing room which had just one ball with darker shade of red. When India picked that ball, they were told it has been chosen by England as their second new ball. 'I am not alleging anything but when we asked for the darker ball, we were told that was the ball England had selected as their second new ball," said the official. 'The right thing would be to have this ball selection in the match referee's room and not in the dressing room with the local umpire as the only official present," he added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
