Michael Busch and Matt Shaw rally the Chicago Cubs to a 4-3 win in 11 innings

Chicago Tribune7 days ago

Michael Busch and Matt Shaw hit run-scoring singles in the 11th inning, lifting the Chicago Cubs past Colorado 4-3 on Tuesday at Wrigley Field and sending the Rockies to their 21st consecutive series loss.
Chicago has won nine of 11 while the Rockies fell to 9-46 and are on pace to finish 27-135. The Rockies are 0-18 in series this season and also lost their last three in 2024, exceeding the 20 straight series lost by the Chicago White Sox last year.
Brenton Doyle put the Rockies ahead 3-2 in the top of the 11th inning with an RBI grounder off Chris Flexen (3-0).
Automatic runner Pete Crow-Armstrong stole third with one out and scored when Busch singled past the drawn-in infield and through the shortstop hole against Tyler Kinley (0-2).
Pinch-runner Jon Berti stole second base against catcher Hunter Goodman and Shaw blooped an opposite-field single into short right field to end the game.
The Rockies built a 2-0 lead in the first against Germán Márquez when Seiya Suzuki had an RBI single and Crow-Armstrong hit into a run-scoring forceout.
Ryan McMahon hit an RBI single in the fourth and Brenton Doyle homered in the seventh against starter Cade Horton, who allowed a season-low four hits in six-plus innings.
The Cubs tied a season high with six stolen bases and were thrown out twice. Runners have been successful on 23 of 29 tries against Goodman.
The Rockies are 2-13 since Warren Schaeffer replaced Bud Black as manager.
Cubs LHP Matthew Boyd (4-2, 3.42 ERA) and Rockies RHP Tanner Gordon (1-1, 4.38) are scheduled to start Wednesday night.

Rockies, amid historically bad start, beat Marlins again to finally win their first series of the season

The Colorado Rockies are back. OK, not at all. But, for the first time this season, the Rockies have won a series. The Rockies, thanks to a late solo home run from Hunter Goodman, beat the Miami Marlins 3-2 on Tuesday night. That, paired with their 6-4 win over the Marlins on Monday night, gave them the win in the three-game series regardless of what happens in the series finale on Wednesday. The Rockies were the last team in the league who hadn't won a series. They were 0-for-19 on the year entering this series this week at LoanDepot Park. The Rockies had lost 22 in a row dating back to last season, too. Advertisement That drought, though, is finally over. The Marlins jumped up 2-0 in the third inning after both Jesus Sánchez and Kyle Stowers hit RBI singles. The Rockies responded in the fifth, when Jordan Beck hit an RBI single and then Thairo Estrada hit a sacrifice fly to left. That then set up Goodman's homer in the eighth, which marked his 10th of the season. The loss dropped the Marlins to 23-36 on the season. They've lost six of their last eight. Even though they got the win, the Rockies are still historically terrible. They sit at just 11-50 on the year, which is by far the worst record in baseball. They were swept 10 times through their first 20 series of the season, which is tied for the most at that point in a season in MLB history. They fired manager Bud Black after a 7-33 start. Advertisement The Rockies were also the third-fastest to reach the 50-loss mark, though the other two occurred during the 1800s, and they were just the second team in history to have 50 losses already when they recorded their 10th win on Monday night. But, less than 6,000 people showed up to watch that happen in South Florida. Regardless, the Rockies have finally won their first series. It might not turn the season around, but it's a start.

Athletics' Wilson named AL Rookie of the Month after magnificent May

Athletics' Wilson named AL Rookie of the Month after magnificent May originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area A memorable May just got even better for Jacob Wilson. The Athletics' sterling young shortstop earned AL Rookie of the Month honors Tuesday after putting up stellar numbers over the last few weeks. Advertisement In May, Wilson posted .368/.437/.538 splits at the plate, along with four home runs, six doubles and 16 RBI. He also walked 11 times compared to just eight strikeouts over 27 games. Before Tuesday's game against the Minnesota Twins, Athletics manager Mark Kotsay praised Wilson's continuing development. 'The month was special,' Kotsay told reporters. 'He's been a big, big part of the offense and continues to just use his 'magic wand,' as we want to call it. The bat-to-ball skill is exceptional. 'He's beating all expectations. I think the growth from a shortstop that we saw from last year to this year is noticeable. I think he's making more plays than he did last season, and I think he'll continue to get better.' Advertisement In addition to his play overall, the No. 6 overall pick from the 2023 MLB Draft created some unforgettable moments over the past month as well. Wilson recorded the third walk-off hit of his young career on May 6 with an 11th-inning single to beat the Seattle Mariners. Needing only 62 career games, that made him the second-fastest player since at least 1969 to record three walk-off hits, per MLB's Sarah Langs. A week later, the Los Angeles native had a dominant homecoming to Dodger Stadium on May 13. In an 11-1 drubbing of the Dodgers, Wilson knocked out a pair of two-run home runs and finished with four hits. Wilson, who entered 2024 as the top prospect in the Athletics' organization, has vaulted himself into the frontrunner for the 2025 AL Rookie of the Year race. And though the Green and Gold have struggled lately, Wilson can continue to cement himself as a centerpiece of the team's young core if his May numbers continue throughout the summer.
