I was only meant to be on Fair City for a month – Matthew O'Brien on daughter's epic reaction & surprise side hustle

HE might play one of Carrigstown's most slippery characters, but Matthew O'Brien says he's just as shocked by James Rafferty's twists and turns as the rest of us.

Matthew has been acting since he was a teen
And if there's one thing Matthew has learned from his time playing the notorious Carrigstown character, it's how to keep everyone guessing — including himself.
The 40-year-old told the Irish Sun: "It's a bit of a rollercoaster, I try as best I can not to read too far ahead.
"We usually get scripts a week or two in advance, sometimes longer, sometimes shorter. I just take it as it comes."
For O'Brien, that spontaneity is part of what makes the role so electrifying, with his character James currently wrapped up in a daddy dilemma after old flame Holly arrived in Carrigstown claiming he was the father of her six-year-old child Milo.

Matthew said: "James was only meant to be in the show for about one or two months, but five years later, I'm still here. It's a wonderful evolution and the writing's been very good for me."
Despite the thrill of playing one of Carrigstown's most unpredictable characters, there are moments when fiction bleeds awkwardly into real life.
When it comes to being noticed by viewers of the soap in public, O'Brien joked: "It's a lot of expletives. The charming terms of endearment that only Irish people can do.
"I get an awful lot of, excuse the language, 'little b****cks' on the street."
But O'Brien isn't fazed, adding: "He is a villain, but the way they've written him is quite good.
"He's a cheeky fecker as well. There are so many layers to him. He's so much craic to play. I describe James as traffic that just veers into oncoming traffic."
That chaotic energy contrasts with O'Brien's home life in Dublin, where he raises six-year-old daughter Luna and son Lucas who's four.
He says they're still figuring out what it means to see their dad on screen.
He explained: "My daughter, Luna, is really into it. She'll ask, 'Is that real? Did they really do that?' She doesn't know the difference between reality and fiction yet.
"When my character got married on the show, she made me re-watch it nine times. Then she asked, 'That's not really your wife daddy, is it?'"

Matthew was originally predicted to stay on Fair City for a 'couple of months'
O'Brien says Luna has already shown signs of following in his footsteps, saying "she's taken a huge interest in acting lately" though he jokes he was secretly hoping for a more traditional path like "a dentist or a doctor".
Reflecting on his own journey, O'Brien credits his parents for giving him the freedom to pursue his passion, saying: "I was very fortunate to have parents who let me do what I felt I needed to do.
"But I do worry about it as a career. People think acting is an easy path — it's not. But it's very rewarding."
NEAR MISS
His break on Fair City almost didn't happen. Years ago, he auditioned for a different role but didn't get it.
The TV star said: "It was a juicy little part. I didn't get it and thought, 'Well, that's the end of Fair City for me'."
Then, during the Covid pandemic, he auditioned again and days later got the call from
While acting is his main gig, O'Brien is far from idle during his "down weeks" and told how he enjoys "model-making" during his spare time, making props for various shows.
He explained: 'I do a lot of model-making and custom art pieces. I make dollhouses, props — I'm a consummate potterer."
And beyond the soap set, O'Brien has shared the screen with some serious A-listers, including Golden Globe winner
Speaking on the experience, Matthew delved into detail of working on set with Farrell on Yorgos Lanthimos' comedy drama The Lobster.
A-LIST PALS
He said: "I was in a scene with him, we were in a forest for about a week, it's nuts, it was a fantastic experience.
"We shot down in Kerry. His room was about two rooms up from mine. So every morning I do that obligatory Irish nod and grunt.
"But he was so cool and lovely."
He continued: "I remember in the scene we did I was stuck in a bear trap and my leg was basically being clamped down, there's blood everywhere and I'm screaming.
"I was screaming and screaming, screaming all day and at one point I remember looking to get some feedback from Yorgo in terms of, 'is this okay?' And I remember Colin came over and he just said, 'you're doing great'.
"It was just really nice because he could see that I was looking for that little bit of reassurance."
He gushed: "What makes him such a great actor is his depth of character and his ability to access his flaws, which I think is lovely. I think he's a very open person."
Another surprising brush with fame came when Matthew worked on Sally Rooney's TV adapted series Conversations With Friends with actor
He said: "I was in a scene with Joe and he was talking to me all day and I was chatting away to him. I had no idea Joe Alwyn went out with Taylor Swift.
"And I was there busy talking about my girlfriend at the time. I was like, 'Oh yeah, are you seeing anyone?' and he goes, 'Oh yeah, I'm seeing someone. She's a singer'."
He laughed: "In my head, I was like, 'Oh, grand. She's like a bar singer', but it transpired that he was going out with Taylor f****ng Swift."
'NO GUARANTEE'
Despite the occasional celebrity run-in, O'Brien remains grounded in the fast-paced world of Irish television.
He added: "Every director is different. Every set is different. What I love about Fair City is the speed.
"We get stuck into it. Otherwise, it's a long day of doing nothing — you get paid to wait around, not just act."
As for his future on the soap, O'Brien is happy where he is but can't promise he will be sticking around in the long run.
Matthew said: "I'm not being facetious — I don't think there are any guarantees in any line of work these days. I have no idea. I take it as it comes.
"I'm grateful for what I have. That's pretty much how I approach it."
And while he's rubbing shoulders with A-listers like Colin Farrell and unknowingly swapping love-life stories with Taylor Swift's ex, Matthew says he's happiest mucking in on set — or making dollhouses at home.
Whether he's dodging plot twists or bear traps, one thing's for sure — O'Brien's not taking a second of it for granted.
He said: 'I'm just grateful to be here."
He added: "I've no idea what's coming next — but that's half the fun."

Qirat causes enormous shock in Sussex Stakes at Goodwood

Field Of Gold's pacemaker Qirat caused an almighty shock with a 150-1 victory in the Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. John and Thady Gosden's Field Of Gold was a 1-3 shot to follow in the hoofprints of his sire Kingman by adding this prestigious Group One contest to his previous top-level victories in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and the St James's Palace Stakes. The Ralph Beckett-trained Qirat, who was last seen finishing 27th of 30 runners in the Royal Hunt Cup, was supplemented for the race last week at a cost of £70,000 in a bid to ensure the red-hot favourite had a strong gallop to aim at. But the race did not go to script, with Qirat keeping up the gallop to emerge triumphant under Richard Kingscote, despite the best efforts of Rosallion, who was a neck adrift at the line. Field Of Gold, meanwhile, had to settle for a laboured fourth, with Henri Matisse third. Ger Lyons has his sights on America after Lady Iman made a successful Goodwood raid to regain the winning thread in the HKJC World Pool Molecomb Stakes. The daughter of Starman had dazzled in her opening three outings but lost her unbeaten record to Aidan O'Brien's Beautify at the Curragh in the Airlie Stud Stakes. Reverting to five furlongs for her first taste of action on British soil, she was sent off the 11-8 favourite and Ryan Moore kept things simple, travelling smoothly in the slipstream of the early leaders before taking over in the final furlong where she was not for catching. Tim Easterby's consistent Argentine Tango gave chase in vain for an honourable second, with Kevin Ryan's early pacesetter Dickensian in third. Stable companions Saqqara Sands and Tabiti shared the honours after the judge announced a dead-heat following a thrilling renewal of the HKJC World Pool Oak Tree Stakes. Tabiti was among the leading contenders for the Group Three contest at 9-2 and with blinkers applied for a second time, the three-year-old set out to make all the running in the hands of Ryan Moore. Saqqara Sands, a much bigger price at 16-1 under Rossa Ryan, emerged from the pack as the biggest threat inside the final furlong and while she briefly managed to poke her head in front, Tabiti battled back and the Ralph Beckett-trained pair passed the post as one.

'It's the kind of song you carry with you': Cork singer on the Collins brothers of WWI

A new song which tells the tragic story of the six Collins brothers from Waterford who joined the British army to fight in World War I has been released by Cork singer-songwriter Roy Buckley. For Another King and Country, written by Phil Coulter alongside Ryan Hennessy and Jimmy Rainsford of Picture This, has been described as an Irish version of Saving Private Ryan — but without the Hollywood ending. The song, which was pitched to Buckley by Coulter as he knew it would suit the singer's voice and background, was released on Wednesday and is available on all major streaming platforms and has already reached Number 6 in the charts. Speaking to the Irish Examiner about the history behind the song, Buckley said: 'Four of the brothers were killed in action. The fifth was listed as missing, presumed dead. The sixth brother, William Collins, was sent home on compassion to console their grieving mother — who had received five telegrams informing her that her sons had fallen. During that time, her husband left her. It's a story of immense heartache. 'Incredibly, the fifth brother was later found in a convent hospital in France after the war and eventually returned home to Waterford. But he lived the rest of his life in pain, with shrapnel still in his body. At the time, jobs were scarce, and like thousands of young Irish men, the Collins brothers were encouraged to enlist by politician John Redmond, who told them that fighting for Britain would help secure Home Rule for Ireland. They had no idea of the horror they were walking into. Phil Coulter and Roy Buckley. 'They were waved off to war as heroes. But after the 1916 Rising changed the political and emotional landscape of Ireland, the surviving brothers returned to a very different country — one where service in the British army was now viewed with suspicion or even hostility. Many returned Irish soldiers never spoke about the war because of that stigma. In fact, the Collins family's descendants in Waterford only discovered the full story around 10 or 12 years ago.' In November 2016, the six brothers were commemorated by the Waterford Civic Trust with a plaque near their family home on Balteen Lane. Buckley said that the story of the Collins' brothers 'hit deep' and said that he has always been drawn to songs that carry history in their bones — songs that aren't just entertainment, but remembrance. 'The tragedy and sadness of it all… young men and boys heading off to war thinking they'd be home by Christmas. I think of poor Agnes Collins receiving five telegrams about her sons. I think of the confusion and heartbreak those men must have felt — being treated as heroes on the way out, and as traitors when they returned,' he said. 'I also have a personal connection: my great-grandfather, Edward Hutchinson, fought and died in World War I. He's remembered at the Menin Gate in Belgium alongside the other Irishmen who fell far from home. When I sing this song, I'm not just performing — I'm telling a real story and honouring real people. That's rare. It's the kind of song you carry with you.' Buckley said that when Coulter played the song for him in his office in Wicklow, he knew it was something special. 'He has an amazing instinct for crafting songs that feel timeless, and he knew this one would really suit my voice and background,' he said. 'Working with Phil is a huge honour — he's not only a musical legend, but he's also incredibly generous with his knowledge. He shares it freely whenever we collaborate. It never feels like I'm just a singer on one of his tracks — there's a real sense of mutual respect. He's one of a kind.' Speaking about being invited by Coulter as a special guest for a leg of his Tranquility by Candlelight tour later this year, Buckley said: 'It's honestly a dream. I grew up listening to Phil's music and learning the great ballads he's written, and to now be sharing the stage with him night after night is incredibly humbling. "He's always championed Irish music and Irish stories. Being part of his tour feels like being welcomed into something much bigger than yourself — a legacy, really.' The tour will include dates at the National Concert Hall in Dublin, the National Opera House in Wexford, and a special night in Waterford at St John's Church, where the pair will perform For Another King and Country for the first time in the home county of the Collins brothers. Buckley said that the remainder of the year is shaping up to be a big one for him, with more singles in the pipeline and further headline shows under his concert series The Song Collector Sessions. 'We've had an amazing run recently, with incredible Irish artists like Mundy, George Furey, Kiera Dignam, Mike Hanrahan from Stockton's Wing, George Murphy, Mickey Joe Harte, and Dave Browne from Picture House all joining me as special guests. It's a busy time — but I'm loving every second of it,' he said.
