Restaurant review: ‘It's more fun — and less arrogant — than it used to be, and I consider our €404 lunch bill to be good value right now'

Our food critic savours the evolved food and service at the Dublin fine-dining institution
I was first brought to Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud as a student, when it was located on James Place East. I didn't know much about French food beyond what I'd learned eating my way around the cheapest restaurants in Paris on the meal vouchers that came with my summer job at Habitat in the Forum des Halles (yes, I have a fairly niche French vocabulary), but I recognised RPG as something special.
The restaurant moved to its current site beside The Merrion Hotel 25 years ago, and I have eaten there on occasion over the years. In the past, I struggled with the formality of the service. I felt it got in the way of the food; it put me off. But I've noticed a gradual change, and the sometimes strangulated French-ness of the past is now gone. The staff are younger, and their accents are from all over the place, not just France; RPG is more fun — and, whisper it, less arrogant — than it used to be.

Ryanair cuts flights to major holiday hotspots amid tax hike

Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair has announced a major shake-up to its French routes, axing all direct flights to three regional airports and slashing services to several tourist hotspots. The airline will cease operations entirely to Brive, Bergerac, and Strasbourg, while flights to destinations including Marseille, Paris-Beauvais, and Toulouse will also be scaled back in the months ahead. The cuts mean fewer options for Irish travellers heading to some of France's most popular holiday regions. M/Shutterstock Services to the sun-soaked French Riviera city of Marseille will fall by 9%, Paris-Beauvais, a key gateway to the capital, will see an 8% reduction, and Toulouse, famed for its 20 museums and vibrant cultural scene, will experience a 4% drop. In total, the shake-up amounts to the loss of 25 flight routes and around 750,000 seats on Ryanair services to and from France. The airline has blamed the reductions on rising aviation taxes, claiming that the increased costs have left certain routes unsustainable. The cuts mean fewer options for Irish travellers heading to some of France's most popular holiday regions. Pic: Philippe Clement/Shutterstock Ryanair says it had no choice but to scale back its French operations in order to protect its wider European network. In March, the French government moved to increase the 'Airline Ticket Solidarity tax.' This will be applied to all airline tickets on flights departing from French territory, and is aimed at supporting climate initiatives. Sharing a statement on the increase and subsequent change of service, Ryanair said: 'This completely avoidable loss will have a severe impact on regional connectivity, tourism and local employment. 'Unless the government changes course and abolishes this unfair air tax, Ryanair's capacity and investment in France will inevitably be redirected to more competitive European markets such as Sweden, Hungary, or parts of Italy.'

Landmark in Trim to remain a venue for major public events

At the recent Trim Municipal District meeting, Councillor Noel French highlighted the 'difficulties' community groups are facing in hosting events in the Porchfields, and the 'hoops' they are being made to jump through. The Independent councillor has since received a response from the council, clarifying the status of upcoming events and the role of the Office of Public Works (OPW), which oversees the site. In the Council Area Manager's response to Cllr French, they said: "I was in contact with senior management in the OPW regarding the concerns raised about the use of the Porchfields for public events and shows.' 'Assistance is being provided by the OPW to the Royal Meath Show to ensure that their event proceeds in the Porchfields in September as has been the tradition for many years.' 'Puca Festival will be taking place in the Porchfields at Halloween.' 'Unfortunately, the Scurlogstown Haymaking Festival was cancelled earlier in the Summer due to inclement weather, but it is anticipated that it will proceed again in the Porchfields next year.' However, the King John's Summer Prom, a new event initially planned for the Porchfields, will now take place at a different location. 'The King John's Summer Prom at short notice had not finalised arrangements for the use of the Porchfields and regrettably it is being moved to another location this year. Hopefully, it will be a successful first event and can be held in the Porchfields in future years.' 'The council will liaise closely with the OPW to ensure licencing arrangements are in place in good time for the use of the Porchfields for future public events and shows to ensure continued benefit to businesses and tourism in the town centre and the council will assist community and voluntary groups in this regard where possible.' Meanwhile, Cllr French — who has long been involved in several of the events — said on a post on social media: 'I did raise this privately and did express my deep concern but then had to do it publicly.' "These events are important. I was previously director of the Royal Meath Show, on the committee of the haymaking, and also a helper with the King John's Prom,' he added.
