Final review conducted for 1857 revolution martyrs' memorial museum content by eminent historians

The memorial is being built along the Ambala-Delhi National Highway (NH) 44 at Ambala Cantonment and aims to showcase a detailed and accurate representation of the events related to the 1857 uprising.
As part of the ongoing preparations, the historians' committee, including Prof Udayvir Singh, Prof Kapil Kumar, and Colonel Yogendra Singh, carefully examined the content to ensure historical accuracy and narrative integrity.
The review included a detailed evaluation of the chronological sequencing, associated visuals, costumes, weapons, and other period-specific elements to maintain authenticity in every aspect of the museum's displays.
Kuldeep Saini, Director of 1857 Shaheedi Smarak, informed that nearly 100 documentary-style films and around 400 digital panels have been prepared. After thorough vetting by the committee, the content has now been approved for final panel printing and installation.
The goal is to make each displayed incident both historically precise and engaging for visitors.
'The memorial is designed to be grand and world-class,' said the historians during their visit. 'Every effort is being made to ensure that visitors receive an accurate and comprehensive understanding of the 1857 Revolution through films, panels, and other interactive exhibits.'
The visiting historians also toured the museum premises and inspected the locations where the digital panels will be installed.

The initiative underscores the government's commitment to preserving and showcasing India's rich history through state-of-the-art storytelling and scholarly diligence.
Other officials and stakeholders involved in the memorial's development were also present during the inspection. It is the dream project of Haryana cabinet minister Anil Vij, who is MLA from Ambala Cantonment.
As per the Haryana government, earlier, 'it was believed that 1857 revolt started from Meerut (Uttar Pradesh) but as per the facts and historians, it has been established that the spark of freedom struggle arose in Ambala Cantonment 10 hours before Meerut.' Due to this history, a memorial was planned in Ambala.

Why are people protesting against the Online Safety Act?
New legislation designed to protect children from harmful content online has been met with fierce opposition from MPs and campaigners - here's why. Deputy prime minister Angela Rayner has warned Reform UK risks "failing a generation of young women" if it scraps the controversial Online Safety Act should the party come into power. It marks the latest intervention in a row between Labour and Nigel Farage's party over the legislation, which is designed to keep people safe online but has also raised concerns over privacy and free speech. Reform has vowed to repeal the law and replace it with a different means of protecting children online, though the party has not said how it would do this. In a message aimed at Farage, Rayner demanded to know what Reform would put in its place in order to prevent the "devastating crime" of intimate image abuse, also known as "revenge porn", for which the act creates a specific criminal offence. "Nigel Farage risks failing a generation of young women with his dangerous and irresponsible plans to scrap online safety laws," Rayner said. "Scrapping safeguards and having no viable alternative plan in place to halt the floodgates of abuse that could open is an appalling dereliction of duty. It's time for Farage to tell women and girls across Britain how he would keep them safe online." It comes after a row between Farage and technology secretary Peter Kyle, who suggested the Reform leader was on the side of "extreme pornographers" and predators like Jimmy Savile due to his opposition to the act. Here, Yahoo News explains why the Online Safety Act is so controversial and why some people are protesting against it. What is the Online Safety Act? The Online Safety Act requires websites and apps in the UK to protect children with tougher age verification methods and to take steps to stop them accessing harmful content. It places a legal duty on platforms to prevent, detect and remove illegal content, such as material promoting suicide or self-harm. Any site that allows users to share content or interact with each other is in scope of the Online Safety Act, which requires platforms to carry out regular assessments on risks to children's safety. These assessments must specifically consider how algorithms could expose children to harmful content, which could see companies using algorithms to change what shows up in under-18s feeds. The act will also require some services to offer adult users tools to give them greater control over the content their children view online. It also introduces specific new offences, including encouraging or assisting serious self-harm, cyberflashing, sending false information intended to cause non-trivial harm and "epilepsy trolling". The act has been implemented in stages, with rules on age verification and filtering of harmful content for minors having come into force on 25 July. Why is it controversial? A number of civil liberties groups have said the act - though well intentioned - is misguided, endangers privacy and free speech, and creates security risks. While the government has shelved a so-called "spy clause" that would allow Ofcom to force encrypted messaging apps like WhatsApp and Signal to provide access to users' messages, it has only been delayed until it "technically feasible" to do so. The Open Rights Group, which campaigns for digital freedoms, has suggested this risks service providers pulling out of the UK so as not to "compromise a global product for a single government". Campaigns manager James Baker said: "These are powers more suited to an authoritarian regime not a democracy and could harm journalists, and whistle-blowers, as well as parents, domestic violence victims and children who want to keep their communications secure from online predators and stalkers." In a letter sent to the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression in 2022, campaign groups including Big Brother Watch, Liberty and Index on Censorship warned the law would result in censorship of online speech which is 'permitted in the offline world and are protected under international human rights law'. Some experts have also told Yahoo News that new age verification rules for porn sites, which require users to submit personal data, put people at risk of data breaches and "having their sexual interests exposed to blackmailers and scammers". What are age verification checks and how do they work? Age verification is a process that confirms somebody's age, typically for compliance with legal requirements or industry standards for age-restricted services. Ofcom has said that methods of assessing age, such as self-certifying that someone is 18 or requiring a debit card payment, are not enough. Methods the regulator has suggested could be used include: Open banking (i.e. checking via someone's online bank account). Photo ID matching, facial age estimation (i.e. using apps which guess someone's age). Age checks via phone networks, credit card checks, email-based age estimation and digital identity services. Mobile network operator age checks (i.e. checking whether your phone number has age filters applied to it). What has Nigel Farage said? At a press conference on 28 July, Farage and former Reform Party chairman Zia Yusuf said they would scrap the Online Safety Act if they came into government. Yusuf said the act did "absolutely nothing to protect children" but worked to "suppress freedom of speech" and "force social media companies to censor anti-government speech". Farage acknowledged Reform did not have "a perfect answer" for what could replace the act but said his party had "more access to some of the best tech brains, not just in the country but in the world" and would "make a much better job of it". After being accused by Peter Kyle of being on the side of "extreme pornographers, peddling hate, peddling violence", Farage called the cabinet minister's comments "absolutely disgusting" and "almost beyond belief". "I've asked for an apology. We're not going to get one," he told Sky News. "I think perhaps the best thing we can do is to sign the petition to repeal the Online Safety Act. That's what I'm going to do today. I think it makes sense. I'm deeply worried about the implications for free speech." How many people have signed the petition? The petition on Parliament's website, titled "Repeal the Online Safety Act", had been signed by more than 523,000 people as of 1pm on Sunday (17 August). It claims the scope of the law is "far broader and restrictive than is necessary in a free society", warning that smaller sites, such as "online hobby forums", do not "have the resource to comply with the act and so are shutting down instead". As it has crossed the 100,000 signature threshold, Parliament will consider it for a debate, although this does not guarantee one will go ahead. What has the Labour government said? Responding to the petition, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology said the government has "no plans" to repeal the act. "Proportionality is a core principle of the act and is in-built into its duties," it added. "As regulator for the online safety regime, Ofcom must consider the size and risk level of different types and kinds of services when recommending steps providers can take to comply with requirements." The department referred to a letter from Ofcom's CEO stating "the act's aim is not to penalise small, low-risk services trying to comply in good faith". Responding to critics of the legislation during a meeting with Donald Trump in July, prime minister Sir Keir Starmer said: "We're not censoring anyone. We've got some measures which are there to protect children, in particular, from sites like suicide sites." "I personally feel very strongly that we should protect our young teenagers, and that's what it usually is, from things like suicide sites. I don't see that as a free speech issue, I see that as child protection." What is a VPN? Critics have also suggested that the law can easily be circumvented using a VPN (virtual private network). These services establish a digital connection between your computer and a remote server owned by a VPN provider via an encrypted tunnel. This allows users to connect to a server in another country, where the same law doesn't apply, and sidestep firewalls and blocks on websites, while providing greater privacy. A quick glance at the Apple App Store late last month showed four of the top five most downloaded apps in the UK were VPNs. The technology secretary has ruled out banning VPNs following a rise in downloads of the software to avoid age verification rules. Speaking to Times Radio, Kyle pointed to 6.2 million downloads of age verification software Yoti, adding that there were "far more people who are actually there to prove their age in a legitimate way".
