Saurabh Tiwary, once tipped to be the next MS Dhoni, and Shahbaz Nadeem win Jharkhand State Cricket Association polls
Two former India cricketers Saurabh Tiwary and Shahbaz Nadeem have been elected as secretary and joint secretary of the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA).
Tiwary, who was team mate of Virat Kohli, during India Under 19 playing days represented India in three ODIs when MS Dhoni was captain, whereas Nadeem played two Test matches in 2019 and 2021.
Both the players retired in 2024.
'There was a group here who approached me and Saurabh asking us to stand for the elections. They wanted us to guide Jharkhand cricket. Initially, I was in two minds but after giving it a thought we decided to contest the elections. This state has made us cricketers and we have played here for the last 25 years. Now it has given us a chance to be cricket administrators. We feel we can contribute,' Nadeem told The Indian Express.
Nadeem, a former left-arm spinner, said being active cricketers till recently ensured they were in touch with the game. 'Development of cricket is key. We have a good talent pool and they can do well. We will try to implement our plans,' Nadeem added.
Tiwary, a hard-hitting batsmen with Dhoni-like locks, played for Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers of Bangalore. However, despite being tipped for big things his international career didn't take off.
Nadeem has 542 first class wickets. He has played for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Daredevils and Lucknow SuperGiants.

New franchise-based shooting league to start in November, players say 'fun', ‘bonding with international players'
The announcement of a franchise based league in the sport of shooting has all the stakeholders buzzing with anticipation. While shooting is largely an individual sport, the Shooting India League will feature only mixed-team format across disciplines and not individual events in a bid to make the event more audience-friendly. There is no clarity about the team owners and the roster of international players, as yet. 'We are expecting more international players given the league has got a dedicated window in the international shooting calendar of the ISSF. The details of team owners and international players will be revealed by early July,' an official close to the developments told this newspaper. The NRAI President Kalikesh Singh Deo had told The Indian Express previously about the format of the tournament. 'We have decided that all six formats will be in mixed team formats, and the shooters will directly compete in the final. The reasoning behind the format is that it will take less time, reducing the pressure on the shooter, and it will also be easy and exciting for the audience. Apart from the shooters and the audience, the format will make it interesting on how teams are picked.' The format is already popular among the Indian shooters with the young players excited to perform against the world professionals while the experienced ones are looking at it as a deserved break from the long and hectic international season. 'I see it as a fun part of the game. This idea of league was there for years, when I was a young player. But it has become reality now and this is the right time. Shooting in India is growing and a franchise based league will bring more and more spectators to the sport,' experienced shooter Rahi Sanrobat told on the sidelines of the logo reveal event of the league. 'The format of the league is exciting and it will serve as a break for all the shooters who can enjoy the dynamics of a team sport. We are already discussing with others who will go to which team. I always wanted to compete with the boys and the mixed team format will allow us to do that,' Rahi added further. The Asian Games gold medallist Sift Kaur Samra is excited to bond with foreign athletes. 'I am very excited to see who the foreigners are. We usually compete against each other but here if they will be in our team, there will be friendships like how we see in team sports,' Sift told The Indian Express. 'Usually, there are no leagues in the individual sports. If there is a team Punjab, I would like to join it. The best part will be that if we perform well in the league, it will definitely help us in tournaments such as World Championships and World Cups,' Sift said. The league can be helpful for the young Indian players who are taking their initial steps in the international arena. One of the recent breakout stars, Suruchi Phogat, who recently won three gold medals at the ISSF World Cup believes that it will expose her to the process of elite athletes. 'While I practice with the Indian top shooters and observe them closely, the league will be an opportunity for me to learn from the top international stars and Olympic champions,'Suruchi said. The first season of the SLI will have a window between 20th November and 2nd December. The tournament will feature mixed team events in pistol (10m, 25m), rifle (10m, 50m 3 positions), and shotgun(Trap & Skeet), as decided by the NRAI Technical Committee. A total of six-eight teams will feature in the competition and will be divided into two pools in the league stage. The selected players will be grouped into four tiers – Elite Champions, World Elite, National Champions, and Junior & Youth Championships – to provide a blend of experienced and emerging talents.

Punjab wheelchair cricketer Vikram dies of cardiac arrest on board a train; he was 39
A wheelchair cricketer from Punjab died of a cardiac arrest near Mathura junction early on Wednesday, on board a train he was travelling from Ludhiana to Gwalior, officials said. Vikram (39) was part of the Punjab wheelchair cricket team that was going to compete in the seventh Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Memorial T-10 Championship being organised by the Madhya Pradesh Wheelchair Cricket Association in Gwalior from June 5. The cricketer, who hailed from Pohir village near Ahmedgarh of Punjab's Malerkotla district, had complained of uneasiness when the train was crossing Delhi. Later his health deteriorated and he was declared dead by railway authorities upon arrival at Mathura Junction railway station. 'In 2020, Vikram was selected for the Indian wheelchair cricket team for a Bangladesh series, which was cancelled due to Covid-19. That was the only time he got close to realising his dream of playing for India. Later, he played in inter-zonal and other national tournaments. Unfortunately, we lost Vikram,' said Somjeet Singh Gaur, captain of the Indian Wheelchair cricket team. Vikram had started playing wheelchair cricket in the last decade. The four associations of differently-abled cricket in India — Wheelchair Cricket India, Indian Deaf Cricket Association, Physically Challenged Cricket Association of India and Cricket Association for the Blind in India — come under one umbrella body Differently Abled Cricket Council of India under the guidance of BCCI secretary Jay Shah in 2021, players like Vikram would get to play in wheelchair cricket tournaments in India. The Punjab wheelchair cricketer played a vital role in Punjab's title win in the sixth edition of the Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Memorial T-10 Championship last year. 'Vikram started playing wheelchair cricket in Ludhiana 8-9 years ago and would practice on his own and bear all expenses through whatever means he could get. Last year, he played an important role in the Punjab team winning the title in the Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Memorial T-10 Championship. He was excited about playing in this edition too. When our train was crossing Delhi, he complained of a severe headache and was sweating profusely. We informed the Railways GRP personnel on the train. They told us that doctors would be available at Mathura station. Vikram slept. Later, the train waited for over an hour ahead of Mathura station and we lost Vikram. We informed his family and they will reach here soon to take his body back home. We are also returning to Punjab,' Vikram's teammate Raja told The Indian Express over the phone from Mathura. Ravi Chauhan, secretary of the Differently Abled Cricket Council of India, told The Indian Express that he received the information about Vikram's demise. 'Various national and international tournaments are organised by Wheel Chair Cricket India under DCCI, but several other tournaments are organised by state associations, too. This was one such tournament and it's unfortunate that we lost a valuable player,' Chauhan said. Squadron Leader (retd) Abhai Pratap Singh, president of Wheelchair Cricket India and joint secretary, DCCI, too expressed his sorrow at the loss of Vikram. 'While the Punjab chapter of Wheelchair Cricket India is yet to get a new body, players formed the Punjab team, which was going to compete in the Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Memorial T-10 Championship. When we got the news of Vikram's demise, we informed our volunteers and officials in Mathura to assist the players. We will see what we can do for Vikram and also consult DCCI. Before any tournament, there are medical check-ups of every player and it was unfortunate that Vikram's health condition emerged before he reached Gwalior and he could not be saved,' he said. Gaur, meanwhile, urged the BCCI to undertake the DCCI. 'We urge the BCCI to undertake the DCCI directly and support the specially-abled players and associations so that such incidents can be avoided,' Gaur added. Sumedha Pathak beats out ‘inspiration' Rubina Francis for Para World Cup shooting gold
Moments after 28-year-old Sumedha Pathak won her first WSPS World Cup individual gold in the women's P2 10m air pistol SH1 final in Changwon, Korea, she was hugged by Paris Paralympics bronze medallist and compatriot Rubina Francis, who finished seventh in the same category. For Sumedha, who edged out another Indian, Shrishti Arora, to win the gold with a score of 235.2, and many of her peers, Francis is an inspiration. 'Rubina mam has always been an inspiration for me and other shooters and whenever we compete at the shooting range, we see each other as inspiration as well motivating,' Sumedha told The Indian Express from Changwon, Korea. Daughter of pharmaceutical entrepreneur Brijesh Chandra Pathak, a young Sumedha would always be keen in her studies as well as listening about her father's social work in their hometown of Varanasi. In 2013, after complaining of fever and body pains, she was diagnosed with Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis resulting in spinal paralysis. The Pathak family would then spend months in hospitals in Delhi as well Kolkata before the youngster recovered, with her body movement below her chest being completely nil. 'After spending more than a year in recovery at different hospitals, when we returned home, the first thing I told Sumedha was to have belief that we will excel in whatever way we can. We live in a joint family and the entire family ensured that Sumedha always remained focussed on her goals whether it be studies or whatever field she chose,' says father Brijesh Chandra Pathak. Sumedha would top the CBSE 12th exam in commerce stream in specially abled division in India with 91.04 percent in 2016. It was in 2018 that her father, along with consultation with international shooters Asif and Ajit Singh Suryavanshi and coach Santosh Tiwari, got a makeshift shooting range built at their home. While Sumedha would start with pistol shooting, the coaches would face the problem of setting the right posture for the youngster. 'Sumedha's body movement is very restricted and hence we could not make her start in rifle shooting. Initially, when she started pistol shooting, her upper body would fall ahead. So we would start with the dry shooting part, working to increase her upper body and shoulder strength. Once we could achieve the right posture and balance on a wheelchair, we increased shots to 40-60 shots daily and she would train for 2-3 hours,' remembers coach Santosh Tiwari. Father Brijesh too talks about the initial struggles. 'While we had built the shooting range at the parking space of our home, Sumedha used to spend a lot of time for physiotherapy sessions too. During 2020-2021, early Covid-19 times, we got a new range built inside our home. We are lucky that the whole shooting community of Varanasi and UP would support her. (When the new) shooting range (came up) in Varanasi in 2024, it meant that the likes of Sumedha could dream of training at a world class facility one day in Varanasi,' says Pathak. In 2022, Sumedha made the Indian Para shooting team and was part of the Indian pistol team which won the silver medal in the WSPS World Cup in France and Korea respectively. In 2023, Sumedha finished seventh in women's P2 10m air pistol SH1 in the Hangzhou Asian Para Games. 'In shooters like Sumedha, the main challenge for coaches is to strike a balance between the upper body strength suited for their shooting style. While the technique can be tweaked based on the posture, the upper body strength has to be the strongest and she has been able to work on that,' says national para pistol coach Subash Rana. In Khelo India Para Games in March this year, Sumedha had scored a score of 237.5 to win the gold. On Monday, she qualified at the second spot with a score of 565 behind Francis, who shot 566. In the final, Sumedha was placed third after the second series before she made her way to the gold medal elimination round followed by her winning the gold with a score of 235.2. 'The Khelo India gold made Sumedha believe that she can win big in finals too and to edge out Rubina then also helped her confidence. While she has won team medals before, this Individual gold is a new beginning for her,' says Jaiprakash Nautiyal, chief coach Indian Para Shooting team.
