1MDB trial: Roger Ng to testify as defence witness on April 24
PUTRAJAYA: Former Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng Chong Wa will testify as a defence witness in Datuk Seri Najib Razak's 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) trial on Thursday (April 24) morning.
Najib's lead counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah informed trial judge Justice Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah that a recent development during an interview with Ng prompted the defence to request that his testimony be heard in court then.
The prosecution did not object to the request.
During Wednesday (April 23) morning's proceedings, Justice Sequerah ruled that Ng may be called to testify, notwithstanding the existence of a restrictive order issued by a US court.

"This court is not prepared to wait for any variation sought. The US court order, which is a protective order, does not bind this court,' said the judge.
Ng, who was convicted in New York for aiding in the embezzlement of 1MDB funds and sentenced to 10 years in prison, is represented by counsel Datuk Tan Hock Chua.
He is expected to be extradited to the United States to face further charges related to the case.
On Oct 30, Justice Sequerah ruled that the prosecution had established a prima facie case, and ordered Najib to enter his defence.
Najib, 71, is facing a total of 25 charges, including four counts of abusing his position to accept RM2.3bil in bribes from 1MDB funds and 21 charges of money laundering involving the same amount.
The hearing resumes tomorrow. – Bernama

SELANGOR is experiencing a shift in its tourism landscape as international visitors begin to form a larger part of the state's tourist arrivals. According to state local government and tourism committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim, the ratio of international to domestic tourists was previously 30:70. 'But by 2024, we successfully broke that pattern. 'Now, international tourists make up a larger share of visitors. 'This a positive sign for Selangor's growing global appeal,' he said. Ng said that while the momentum was encouraging, Sekinchan faced one major hurdle – the lack of four-star hotels for the rising number of higher-spending tourists. He was speaking to reporters at Sekinchan Padi Field Festival 2025 in the Sabak Bernam district. The state government had aimed to draw some 13,000 visitors to the two-day event. Held at Terminal Sekinchan, the festival was the first of its kind in Malaysia and had been held in support of Visit Selangor Year (VSY) 2025. The second day offered even more attractions, which included a padi field run, free health screenings and environmental volunteer activities. The festival was part of the VSY2025 campaign that aimed to draw 8 million visitors and generate RM11.7bil in tourism- related transactions. To support these goals, the Selangor Budget 2025 has allocated RM8mil for VSY2025 preparations. These include programming and upgrading tourism facilities across all nine districts. In the works are over 100 programmes and initiatives covering educational tourism, sports, food and beverage, arts, culture and heritage. Also present during the festival press conference were Menteri Besar Incorporated chief executive officer Saipolyazan M. Yusop and Tourism Selangor chief executive officer Chua Yee Ling.

Samenta heartened by Inland Revenue Board's latest measures on e-invoicing
PETALING JAYA: The Inland Revenue Board's (IRB) decision to exempt micro enterprises from e-invoicing and to give small and medium enterprises more time to comply with the mandate is a positive step that will help ease the current difficulties faced by businesses in the country. The Small and Medium Enterprises Association of Malaysia (Samenta) stated that IRB's exemptions are not only timely but also reflect an understanding of the real challenges faced by small businesses on the ground. 'We have provided input on both issues, and we are grateful that the government has shown genuine care and support for our most vulnerable enterprises,' Samenta national president Datuk William Ng said. 'We are especially heartened by the government's decisive move to permanently exempt businesses earning less than RM500,000 annually from the e-invoicing mandate. 'This exemption spares our smallest traders, hawkers and family-run shops, many operating without digital infrastructure, from compliance burdens that could have forced them to shut down or operate informally,' he added. Ng said the postponement of e-invoicing requirements until Jan 1, 2026, for businesses earning below RM5 million a year provides SMEs with much-needed time to prepare, strengthen their skills and adjust to new demands. This flexibility is essential for SMEs to survive and grow in today's changing economic environment, he added. On Thursday, IRB announced that the e-invoicing implementation for taxpayers with annual income or sales between RM1 million and RM5 million is postponed to Jan 1, 2026, while those below RM500,000 are exempted, and the deadline for those up to RM1 million is extended to July 1, 2026. The board also set a new e-invoicing implementation timeline: Phase 3 for taxpayers with annual income or sales between RM5 million and RM25 million starts on July 1, 2025; Phase 4 for those earning RM1 million to RM5 million begins on Jan 1, 2026; and Phase 5 for taxpayers with income up to RM1 million will commence on July 1, 2026. On the government's decision to postpone the permit requirement for the use of subsidised liquefied petroleum gas, Ng said: 'In response to the concerns of our street-level food operators, the temporary waiver of liquefied petroleum gas permit requirements will go a long way in safeguarding the daily livelihoods of thousands of families and small traders. It may be a small administrative change, but it carries significant implications for business continuity and the cost of living.' Without these timely measures, he said, Malaysia could have faced the potential collapse of thousands of small businesses, particularly those in the micro and informal sectors. Ng pointed out that the government's proactive stance has averted what could have become a national micro-business crisis. 'More importantly, these decisions send a clear message that the government sees SMEs as a central pillar of our economy and is responsive and willing to amend policies based on feedback from the ground,' he said, adding that Malaysia is a country where small businesses are treated with respect and understanding.

Siti Kasim: Maybe hard for PMX to gain immunity from Federal Court judging from Najib's precedent
THERE is already a precedent whereby the Federal Court had previously ruled against now incarcerated former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak to be granted immunity from the extraordinary claim (civil suit) filed against the Malaysian Government by then Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua in January 2017. Premised on the common law tort of misfeasance in public office, the thrust of the claim was that Najib had committed misfeasance in public office in relation to the sovereign fund 1MDB. It was alleged that the then 10-term Pekan MP had abused his public office by personally benefitting from the receipt of monies from the 1MDB fund. Against such backdrop, human rights activist and lawyer Siti Kasim opined that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is liable for the civil suit on se*ual harassment filed against him by his former research assistant Yusoff Rawther four years ago. 'Recall that Pua lost his case at both the High Court and Appeal Court levels but the Federal Court ruled that Najib can be charged with misfeasance in public office given the PM or any minister for the matter are regarded as civil servants,' she recounted on her latest YouTube rant. 'Moreover, in my personal opinion a PM should not be exempted from any civil suit in his personal capacity … After all, the civil suit filed by Yusoff revolves around sexual assault on him prior to him having assumed his PM office.' Added the Orang Asli advocate: 'Going by the precedent set by Najib's case, Anwar can be sued on grounds that a PM doesn't enjoy immunity but it seems that Yusoff has to wait for a few more years before the hearing of his civil suit can materialise. 'He may now have to wait for the decision of the Federal Court on Anwar's immunity claim first … We can only pray that justice shall prevail for the righteous party.' PMX seeks immunity For context PMX had on yesterday (May 27) sought the Federal Court ruling if he should be granted immunity from the civil suit filed by Yusoff prior to him taking office on Nov 24, 2022. The 31-year-old grandson of the late Penang consumer advocate SM Mohamed Idris had filed his civil suit in July 2021 in which he alleged that Anwar had sexually assaulted him on Oct 2, 2018 at Anwar's residence in Segambut, Kuala Lumpur. In his countersuit, Anwar claimed that Yusoff's allegation of sexual harassment against him is unfounded as he was entertaining his family and friends at his residence. The KL High Court last year fixed the trial to be heard from June 16 to 19 and June 23 to 25. However, Yusoff found himself charged in the KL High Court on Dec 5 last year here with trafficking in 305gm of cannabis in addition to having in his possession two imitation pistols to which he pleaded not guilty. Framed under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, the drug charge which is punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act, provides life imprisonment and whipping of not less than 12 lashes upon conviction. 'Throughout his drug and pistol trial, Yusoff has incessantly claimed that he has been trapped and framed by people in the authority who holds grudges against him for his civil suit,' observed Siti Kasim.
