'Hopefully I have a good chance of winning tomorrow': Charlie Woods on Junior PGA Championship

WEST LAFAYETTE ― A crowd of roughly 500 fans expecting to see Charlie Woods ― the son of golf legend Tiger Woods -- and hoping to get a glimpse of Tiger himself, saw something different.
Those that stayed witnessed a 16-year-old exhibit the quiet confidence, leveled ball-striking and putting of an elite-level player and master of a course that only two days ago had stumped him and left him in 43rd place after the first round of the Junior PGA Championship.
Woods second shot on the 18th hole par 4 dropped firmly onto the green before he calmly putted for birdie to finish -12, placing him in second place and in the hunt for the final round on Friday.
"My round was pretty up and down and it gave me a heart attack out there," Woods said. "But nine birdies is pretty good. A couple of three-putts, I made a few mistakes today but overall pretty solid round. Pretty good position going into tomorrow."
Woods was in control of the Ackerman-Allen Golf Course in West Lafayette during his second time around, even after his tee time was delayed two hours because of rainstorms and soggy conditions.
Woods birdied the first hole and would stay steady throughout the round, exhibiting zero timidness after having missed the cut at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship last month in Dallas.

The best shot of the night for Woods came on the 10th hole, spotting an iron shot two feet short of the hole for a tap in birdie before outdoing himself with his finale on 18.
As he walked to finish his birdie putt, The Clubhouse Bar & Grill at Birck Boilermaker Complex was lined with fans celebrating Woods success.
He birdied, shook the hands of playing partners Sam Carraher of Crown Point, Indiana, and Ronin Banerjee of Irvine, California, before turning over his scorecard to tournament officials.
"It was so much fun," Woods said. "I had a pretty fun chip on 16 but I just enjoyed being out there, having fun and hopefully I have a good chance of winning tomorrow."

Tiger Woods' son Charlie finishes top 10 at Junior PGA Championship in West Lafayette

WEST LAFAYETTE — Charlie Woods entered the Junior PGA Championship and started slow, just cracking the top 50 on Tuesday at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette. Woods would prove to doubters, if there were any, that he could hold his own on the big stage just over a week after being cut in the U.S. Amateur Championship in Dallas. While the final result wasn't what Woods had desired on Friday, it still sends a message that golf's famous teenager could play the sport at an elite level. Woods finished the Junior PGA Championship 9-under-par and tied for ninth after shooting a 74 on Friday afternoon. Woods also has a chance to be a captain's pick for the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team which will be announced Tuesday. While Woods wasn't made available for media post match on Friday, there were plenty of compliments shared in his direction about his game by 2025 Junior PGA Championship winner Lunden Esterline. 'Putter finally woke up': Charlie Woods gets hot in Round 2 of Junior PGA Championships "I had fun playing with him and Pennson (Badgett)," Esterline said. "They were both good guys." Three bogies and a double bogey on 15 ultimately hampered the 16-year-old from Jupiter, Florida. His putting didn't carry the same sharpness on the greens at Ackerman-Allen Course where he'd birdied nine times the day before. Woods faced an uphill battle entering Friday tied at -12 against Esterline who was -19. Winning the Junior PGA Championship was feasible for Woods but he needed to replicate his performance from Thursday to catch Esterline. Tiger Woods' son, Charlie, couldn't come close to the level he had shown the day before and dropped seven spots on the Junior PGA Championship leaderboard. His final score for the event was 9-under 276, finishing tied for ninth. Charlie had made two birdies and two bogeys up to the 13th hole, but the worst came later. The young Woods carded a bogey and double bogey on the 14th and 15th, respectively, to completely seal his fate for the round and the event. Still, a top-10 finish in this tournament is one of the most significant results of his young golf career. Charlie, who started the fourth round tied for second, failed to secure one of the two spots for the team that will compete in the Junior Ryder Cup. The system established by the PGA of America grants direct qualification to the top two finishers in the Junior PGA Championship. Charlie Woods of the United States hits a shot in the fairway on the18th hole during the first round of the U.S. Junior Amateur at Brook Hollow Golf Club on July 21, 2025 in Dallas, Texas. MoreHis result at this event gave Charlie 80 points toward the Junior Ryder Cup team's qualifying ranking, bringing his total to 455. This will allow him to move up a few places in the rankings, but he'll be out of reach of the top two, who also earn a spot on the team. Charlie still has a chance to be selected by captain Suzy Whaley as the sixth boy member of the team. He will certainly face stiff competition in this regard, as he has approximately seven players ranked higher on the Junior Ryder Cup points list. However, Charlie has as strong a case as anyone else, as he has one win this season unlike the aforementioned seven players. Another detail is that two of those seven players tied with Charlie in the Junior PGA Championship, but none finished better than him. Lunden Esterline cruised through the fourth round to comfortably win the Boys Junior PGA Championship with a six-stroke lead. As for the girls, Asterisk Talley confirmed her favored status and won with a score of 12-under, one stroke ahead of Zoe Cusack. Both also secured their spots on the Junior Ryder Cup team. Charlie Woods is charging up the leaderboard at the 49th Junior PGA Championships in no small part thanks to sensational putting in the second round on July 30. Woods, a rising junior at the Benjamin School and son of legendary golfer Tiger Woods, shot 66 (6-under) in the second round on Wednesday at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. He entered the clubhouse at 7-under for the tournament and in fourth place overall. Woods had his putter working early in the round. He sank a long birdie putt on the third hole and went on to shoot 31 on the front nine, carding six birdies along the way. "I hit it about the same as I did in the first round, but the putter finally woke up today," Woods told Ethan Hanson of Lafayette's Journal & Courier after the round. "It felt really good in my hands, and I was able to roll a few in after some solid iron shots. "Nice to get myself back in the mix and looking forward to getting after it tomorrow (Thursday)."
