As the run-up to the French Open begins in earnest, storylines for the second Grand Slam of the year are taking shape. Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner look a level above the rest of the field on the men's side, while defending champion Iga Świątek will have to get past one of the top four players in the world as soon as the quarterfinals if she wants to become the first player to win four women's singles titles in a row in the Open Era.
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka is seeking a first Grand Slam title away from hard courts; Novak Djokovic remains in pursuit of his 25th major and a crop of young stars on both the ATP and WTA Tours are looking to make their first big run at one of the four biggest tournaments in the sport.

Wayne Rooney says he was 'very disappointed' after Tom Brady questioned work ethic: 'It was very unfair'

Former Birmingham City manager Wayne Rooney isn't pleased with Tom Brady after the former New England Patriots great questioned Rooney's work ethic in a documentary. Rooney said he was "very disappointed" by Brady's comments, which Rooney called "very unfair," according to The Athletic. The controversy started after Brady expressed concerns about Rooney during the "Built in Birmingham: Brady & the Blues" docuseries on Amazon Prime. The program, which aired Aug. 1, followed the Birmingham City Football Club after Brady joined the club as a minority owner in 2023. During an episode of the series, Brady called out Rooney's work ethic, saying, "I'm a little worried about our head coach's work ethic." He later added, 'I mean, I don't know, I don't have great instincts on that.' Rooney pushed back on that criticism on his podcast, saying Brady's comments were "unfair," per The Athletic. 'I saw that last week from Tom Brady. I think it was a very unfair comment. 'I think Tom came in once, which was the day before a game where the days are a little bit lighter anyway, and I don't think he really understood football that well. But what he does understand is, he's a hard worker, we know that. 'Football is not the NFL. NFL works for three months a year. Players do need rest as well, so I think it was very unfair, the way he's come out and portrayed that.' Brady won out in the end. Rooney was fired after just 15 matches. Birmingham City turned in one of its worst seasons, and was relegated to League One. While Rooney was upset about the comments, he was careful not to rip Brady. In addition to calling Brady a "hard worker," Rooney said he has "respect" for Brady. Rooney also called Brady "one of the greatest, if not the greatest athlete of all time." Rooney also delivered an all-time, out-of-context quote about Brady, saying, "I don't think he really understood football that well." Rooney was obviously using the term "football" to mean soccer, but it's still a funny thing to read about Brady. Birmingham City bounced back quickly after showing Rooney the door. The team broke the record for most points scored in League One the following season and earned a promotion. Rooney was hired by Plymouth Argyle in May of 2024. His tenure with the club lasted just a few months. With the team in last place, Rooney and Plymouth Argyle agreed to mutually split in December. Rooney, considered one of the greatest soccer players of his era, has not been hired by another club since leaving Plymouth Argyle.

🚨 BREAKING: Nottingham Forest reach 'total agreement' for Man City player

Nottingham Forest have reached an agreement with Manchester City to sign attacking midfielder James McAtee in a deal worth £30 million, according to The Athletic's David Ornstein. The reported deal between the Premier League clubs also includes a buy-back clause and sell-on terms. The 22-year-old England Under-21 international is set to move to the City Ground after the two clubs settled on a package that includes sell-on and buy-back clauses. The agreement follows weeks of negotiations, during which Forest saw an initial bid of £25 million rejected. City had been holding out for a higher valuation, with figures between £35 million and £40 million previously reported. However, Forest's persistence has paid off, with the final deal believed to meet City's minimum acceptable price while safeguarding their long-term interest in the player. McAtee, a product of Manchester City's academy, has impressed during loan spells at Sheffield United and with England's U21 side, where he has worn the captain's armband. Nottingham Forest views him as a key addition ahead of their upcoming Europa League campaign, particularly after the departure of winger Anthony Elanga. 📸 PAUL ELLIS - AFP or licensors

The unsettling rise of athlete stalkers, plus an NFL QB debate

Good morning! Congrats to the Swifities on your upcoming football podcast listen. Serious Matters: Stalkers, athletes and a grave threat The internet has brought us many great things (thank you for reading this newsletter on your internet-connected device). But it can also be a terrifying place, we need to look no further than the lives of prominent athletes for jarring examples. This week, The Athletic's investigative team is publishing a stark series of reports on stalking in sports. It's not a new issue, but incidents have proliferated as athletes and teams are ever-present on social media. Carson Kessler penned a haunting overview of the issue today, which is worth your time this morning. Two examples that struck me: Last year, a 40-year-old man was arrested after professing his love for Dallas Wings rookie Paige Bueckers, who was playing at UConn. The man said he was planning to propose to Bueckers and would 'choose to die' if he could not be with her. A woman stalked former NFL wide receiver T.J. Houshmanzadeh to the point where she changed her last name to Houshmanzadeh and used it to gain entry to the gated community where his family lives. Yiiikes. Examples are rampant, as the story details. Players like Caitlin Clark, Iga Świątek and Aaron Donald have been victims. I urge you to read the story today. We'll have more on the topic this week, too. Let's keep moving: Following Up: Let's play a game We saw tremendous interest in yesterday's QB Tiers story, so I'd like to get a little more granular — and a little more fun — today with a feature that has plenty of depth to discuss. We'll call this Background/Pop Quiz/Poll, or BPP for short. Let's start with the B: BackgroundWe're focusing on the Tier 1 guys today, because the game's elite QB class might have the most interesting layers of all. It popped up when I asked Mike Sando, who's compiled this info for 12 years running now, what surprised him most about this year's class: 'It was a little surprising to see Matthew Stafford suddenly reach Tier 1 for the first time, but he was already near the border and barely slipped across it, so this wasn't a huge move. I was surprised that nearly all voters gave Jared Goff his due instead of suggesting he might regress without Ben Johnson as his offensive coordinator.' Stafford's ascension party could be halted by a lingering back injury that gets more troubling by the day. Pop QuizLongtime Pulse readers know my affinity for anonymous quotes, because in this context — giving unvarnished opinions about opposing teams/players — they are gold. I'm giving you two of my favorites in the form of a pop quiz, with answers at at the bottom: Anonymous QB 1: 'He's still playing?' a defensive coordinator asked. Anonymous QB 2: 'He has proven when it comes to the big games, he can't win,' a defensive coach said. Ouch, on both accounts. Answers way down below. Pulse PollThe more I stared at this list, the more my eyes drifted to the top. Patrick Mahomes, the 29-year-old who already has three Super Bowl rings and five Super Bowl appearances, is No. 1, of course. But tied — tied! — with him is Bengals QB Joe Burrow. No one has to explain to me, an LSU fan, how good Burrow is. But I was struck by how unequivocal NFL decision makers feel about Burrow, which begged the question: Would anyone really take Burrow over Mahomes right now? Thus we arrive at our next Pulse Poll, and I want to further hone the prompt: If you're building an NFL team and have hired an above average offensive coordinator, are you (today, right now) picking Mahomes or Burrow to be your QB1? It's Mahomes. What are we talking about? One NFL executive compared Burrow to Joe Montana. I'll take him. Make your voice heard here. We'll run the results tomorrow. News to Know No. 1 already an underdogThe preseason AP Top 25 college football poll debuted yesterday, with Texas — just as they are in the coaches' poll — sitting at No. 1. Behind the Longhorns are No. 2 Penn State and No. 3 Ohio State, which is fun because Texas travels to Columbus for a Week 1 blockbuster. A better fact: The defending champion Buckeyes are actually 2.5-point favorites in that game, too, per BetMGM. The season starts in 11 days. See the full rankings here. Norris in concussion protocol after scary injuryLions coach Dan Campbell said yesterday that defensive back Morice Norris was back in the team facility yesterday and is in concussion protocol after Norris' injury during Friday's preseason game against the Falcons. Both teams decided to suspend the game after Norris was taken off the field in an ambulance after attempting a tackle in the fourth quarter. Read more here. More news A Nevada judge ruled that former Raiders coach Jon Gruden's ongoing lawsuit against the NFL can move forward in public. It's a big win for Gruden. UFC is ditching its pay-per-view model in favor of a massive deal with Paramount. We'll have a big feature on this tomorrow. Trey Yesavage, the Blue Jays' top pitching prospect, is heading to Triple-A and the team hopes he will contribute in the majors down the stretch. See more on Yesavage. Jack Grealish is heading to Everton on loan for this season. What a weird time at Manchester City for the England international. The Ottawa Senators purchased a piece of land to build a new arena. Details here. Crystal Palace lost their appeal to play in Europa League next season and will instead play in the Conference League. It's messy. Michigan football picked up another blue-chip QB commit yesterday. 📫 Love The Pulse? Check out our other newsletters.
