
Eight rare juices you can only try in the Amazon
The Amazon is not only the world's largest and most biodiverse ecosystem – it's also one of the most delicious. Among the thousands of native species, around 220 trees are known to bear edible fruit, many of which never leave the jungle. Some are too delicate to export, while others are little known beyond the communities that have nurtured them for generations. But along the Amazon River and its tributaries – from Peru's misty highland jungle to the floodplains of northern Brazil – travellers can find market stalls and cafe counters brimming with thick, vibrant juices that capture the flavour of the forest.
These are the fruits you're unlikely to find bottled or powdered at home, often pulped just hours after harvest, served chilled in the tropical heat and prized not only for their nutrients but for their rich textures and sharp tangs.
Here are eight juices worth seeking out, whether for their bold flavours, cultural significance or the thrill of trying something new.
Aguaje
On the eastern slopes of the Andes, where rivers cascade in dramatic waterfalls into the Amazon Basin, travellers will find the aguaje fruit of the Moriche palm. In the small Peruvian city of Tingo Maria, markets are piled high with silver trays of the armadillo-like fruit. Locals soak them in water for a day or two, before peeling the brown armour to reveal an intensely orange flesh. The pulp is soaked, mashed and transformed into aguajina – a thick and custardy drink that tastes like cross between pumpkin pie and flan.
Some locals say that the fruit contains oestrogen compounds and men should be careful of drinking too much of it, though there is little scientific evidence. "The aguajina is very useful – for the bone, for the skin, for the complexion – especially for women," says Gianina Pujay, an aguajinera who sells the drink across from Tingo Maria's fruit market.
Cocona
In the same region, the cocona fruit, a tropical relative of the common tomato, yields a tangy juice that tastes like a pineapple-papaya hybrid with a thick, almost oily body.
"Many Amazonian fruits are consumed in juice form because their pulp is acidic, fibrous or difficult to eat raw, like the cocona," explains Miluska Carrasco, a researcher and nutritionist at Peru's Instituto de Investigación Nutricional, "It's also a practical way to use them quickly before they spoil."
Camu camu
Descending from the verdant slopes of the Andes into the Amazon Basin, the rivers slow down and transform into thoroughfares of commercial activity. On the banks of the Ucayali River is the river port city of Pucallpa, the furthest Peru's road system will take you into the centre of the Amazon. Here, where container barges, passenger ships and canoes all move goods around the forest, camu camu is a must-drink juice.
The small, tart, plum-like fruit tastes like a sour strawberry with a hint of peach, and is a favourite of local juice vendors. "[It] has more vitamin C than oranges," says Carrasco, "[as well as] other bioactive compounds." Where a navel orange provides about 6mg of vitamin C per 100g, the camu camu contains more than 2,000mg for the same amount of flesh.
The season for camu camu is short, however, typically between January and March, so take advantage of the fresh juice when it's available. Locals also eat the little plums with salt; just spit out the seeds.
Tucumã
In the heart of Brazil's vast Amazonas state, 700 miles east of Pucallpa as the toucan flies (and at least a week or more on a river boat), tucumã palms provide an orange fruit that's only in season from February to August. During this time, it's often eaten for breakfast with cassava flour and is a key ingredient in the state's signature x-caboquinho sandwich, where slices are layered with salty coalho cheese and sweet chunks of fried plantains.
To make juice from the notoriously fibrous tucumã, vendors use peelers, blenders and sieves to reduce shavings of the fruit to a pulp and then filter out the lightly nutty liquid.
According to Francisco Falcão, a farmer in the community of Bom Jesus in the Tefé National Forest, "people say that tucumã is good to eat and improves sight and skin". Indeed, the fruit is rich in both manganese and calcium. Where kiwi, which is relatively high in calcium, contains around 30mg of calcium per 100g, tucumã has been measured to contain around four times as much.
Pupunha
Also in the Tefé region, "there's a palm tree that people eat the fruit of," says Falcão. "Pupunha is a plant that we harvest starting in December and ending February." Spanish-speaking parts of the Amazon know this oily palm fruit as pejibaye or pijuayo, and it is a key source of natural fats as well as vitamin B1 and vitamin E.
The pupunha grow in clusters of orange and red acorn-shaped fruit. They cannot be eaten raw, but once boiled they make a filling snack akin to an oily sweet potato. The boiled fruits also produce a creamy orange juice once fully pulped. In Peru, forest communities ferment the pulp into a lightly alcoholic drink called chicha or masato – especially during times of harvest.
Cupuaçu
In Manaus, capital of the Amazonas, reliable refrigeration means locals and visitors can enjoy fruits in various forms. The thick shell of the cupuaçu contains a collection of seeds surrounded by a fleshy white pulp. That pulp can be transformed into silky, tangy juice. But lately, locals have been incorporating its juice into ice cream. Indeed, the rest of Brazil is catching on, with ice cream parlours in Rio de Janeiro now offering the flavour too.

Cupuaçu tastes like a creamy pineapple – surprising given that it's a close relative of cacao. "It's the same genus as cacao and people make cupulate [as opposed to chocolate from it]," says Daniel Tregidgo, a researcher at Brazil's Mamirauá Institute for Sustainable Development. "When you go to the markets there are huge piles of cupuaçu seeds. I look at that and I say that's hipster chocolate right there."
Why haven't we heard of cupulate yet? In Tregidgo's opinion, "It's a matter of investment. If you take something from the middle of Amazon and you try to get it out into the global market without being exploitative, it is a bit tricky." Bars produced from cupuaçu have the flavour of chocolate but retain some of their citrus piquancy.
Jenipapo
In the Amazon delta, jenipapo is known for its traditional use as a blue dye and a temporary tattoo ink. The fruit itself, which grows all along Brazil's coast in addition to the Amazon, has a yellowish pulp that's a great source of vitamin B1 and zinc.
While jenipapo can be consumed as a fresh juice that tastes a bit like dried apricots, try ordering licor de jenipapo, an infused cachaça liqueur served in small bars and botecos.
Açaí
While açaí has become a global wellness trend, the version served in the Amazon bears little resemblance to the frozen bowls found abroad.
What many travellers don't realise is that there are seven distinct açaí palm species. Locals distinguish between açaí-do-Pará, açaí-do-mato and juçara, depending on region. In Belém, for example, vendors use pneumatic presses to extract the berry's thick, purplish pulp – sold in clear bags and consumed straight out of bowls with spoons, as if a purple gazpacho. Outside of its natural range in Brazil, the rest of the country enjoys the pulp prepared in yogurts and ice creams.

If Kuwait wants to be the next Dubai, it still has a long way to go
For decades, Kuwait has stood in the shadow of its flashier Gulf neighbours. While Dubai dazzled the world with futuristic skylines and shopping malls the size of cities, and Qatar grabbed headlines with its glitzy World Cup, Kuwait kept largely to itself. No glossy tourist board campaigns. No bid for Expo. No island resorts rising from the sea. But that may be changing. Kuwait, a nation of pearl-diving heritage and oil-fuelled prosperity, is quietly angling to become the Gulf's next luxury travel hotspot. Not in the shouty, gold-plated way of Dubai, but in a more low-key, culturally rooted, design-conscious fashion. New hotels are opening, Kuwaiti entrepreneurs are investing in home-grown hospitality ventures, and the country's creative class is shaping something distinctive. But can it work? And more importantly, will anyone come? A country with money, taste… and rules On paper, Kuwait has all the raw materials for upscale tourism: money, safety, a dramatic desert-meets-sea landscape, a thriving dining scene, and one of the most fashion-forward populations in the Gulf. Kuwaitis are well-travelled, multilingual, and spend freely. They appreciate design, cuisine, and culture. Yet there's a fundamental paradox at the heart of Kuwait's tourism ambitions: it wants to attract the outside world, without compromising its inward values. Unlike Dubai or Doha, Kuwait is dry; there is no alcohol, and very little nightlife in the Western sense. Public displays of affection are frowned upon, and dress codes in public spaces are expected to be modest. There have been criticisms of the country's restrictions on freedom of expression, and poor treatment of migrant workers. Tourist visas are available, but bureaucracy can be slow and frustrating. Add to this a chronic underinvestment in tourism infrastructure – until fairly recently, there were barely a handful of internationally branded hotels – and you start to see the scale of the challenge. A new scene, quietly unfolding The 'real Kuwait' is best experienced through its blossoming dining and lifestyle scene, much of it created by locals for locals but now ready to welcome curious visitors. There's VOL.1, a sleek industrial coffee shop where baristas hand-pour single-origin Ethiopian beans beneath raw concrete ceilings. And then there's Dar Hamad, a fine-dining restaurant serving elevated takes on traditional Kuwaiti cuisine: grilled zubaidi fish, saffron-scented machboos, date syrup desserts, within a beautifully restored mid-century villa. Midar Restaurant brings traditional Kuwaiti cuisine into focus, specialising in freshly caught seafood sourced directly from local fishermen. Its menu is inspired by both Kuwait's desert heritage and urban vibrancy, giving diners an authentic taste of place in an elegant setting. For a touch of Lebanese glamour, Babel is a must. The restaurant is as much about the interiors – grand arches, warm lighting, intricate stonework – as it is about the food. Known for its artfully presented mezze and grilled dishes, it's often chosen for special occasions, offering a sophisticated, regional dining experience. French fine dining has its place in Kuwait too. Lenôtre, a long-standing name in the city's restaurant scene, has been given a fresh lease of life with a redesigned, seasonal menu. While savoury dishes shine, it's the desserts (especially the caramel soufflé) that keep locals and visitors coming back. And for those missing a taste of the West, Smoke Me BBQ delivers American-style smoked meats with authenticity. Along the waterfront, there's growing talk of reimagining the country's 500km coastline for luxury resorts, and restoring historic Failaka Island as a boutique wellness destination. Who is Kuwait for? Kuwait has long been a stop for business travellers, oil consultants, and the occasional diplomat. But for sun-seeking Europeans, it's never been a contender. The lack of alcohol alone is a dealbreaker for many package holidaymakers. And yet – as the raft of Saudi-owned alcohol-free resorts popping up on the Red Sea coast prove – that might not matter. The country isn't aiming to become the next Ibiza. It's not even aiming to become the next Doha. Instead, Kuwait's tourism ambitions appear to be quietly calibrated toward two groups: the affluent, well-travelled Arab diaspora seeking authenticity over artifice; and a new generation of experience-led travellers more interested in design, food, and culture than cocktails by the pool. It helps that Kuwait is becoming easier to access. Its international airport, once an ordeal, has been modernised. Direct flights operate from London with Kuwait Airways and British Airways. Visas are now available online for most Western nationalities. The catch Still, challenges remain. Compared to the polished, PR-driven offerings of Saudi or the UAE, Kuwait's brand is opaque. Tourism is not yet a government priority in the way it is elsewhere. There is no central campaign, no English-language portal enticing travellers to visit. And while Kuwaitis are famously hospitable, there remains a wariness about opening the country up too fast or too broadly. The biggest hurdle might not be infrastructure or alcohol, it might be narrative. In a world saturated by viral travel content and Instagrammable moments, Kuwait's understated charm is a harder sell. It requires curiosity, patience, and respect for cultural nuance. It is not a destination for everyone. But for those who want something different, and more real, that might be precisely the point. How one man's dream led to 50,000 pilgrims honoring Our Lady of Copacabana in Bolivia
More than 50,000 people from Bolivia and neighboring Peru make a pilgrimage every August to Copacabana, on the shores of Lake Titicaca, to honor Bolivia's patron saint, Our Lady of Copacabana. In the main event of the celebration, a replica of the wooden-carved figure of the Virgin Mary leads a procession. Her official feast is Feb. 2 — coinciding with Candlemas — but Aug. 5 marks the anniversary of her canonical coronation as the patron saint of Bolivia by a papal bull issued by Pius XII in 1925. This year is the 100th anniversary. 'She has granted me various miracles,' said Elizabet Valdivia, who traveled 12 hours by road and boat from the Peruvian city of Arequipa to join the procession. 'She gave us our car, the possibility of raising my son, and I always ask her to watch over our jobs.' The birth of a sacred icon Our Lady of Copacabana's basilica has safeguarded this Virgin Mary figure since the late 16th century. Her history dates back to 1583, when Inca descendant Francisco Tito Yupanqui crafted a figure in her honor. According to Marcela Cruz, a guide at the museum next to the basilica, Yupanqui had a dream about the Virgin and molded a clay figure to depict her. He showed it to the chaplain, but after being rejected and mocked, he went for a walk by the lake. 'There, he encountered the image of the Virgin as an Inca maiden,' Cruz said. 'That's why her image is so simple.' Inspired by the apparition, Yupanqui set off for the city of Potosí, about 330 miles (530 kilometers) from La Paz, the current capital city. There, he carved the image that is now revered in the basilica from a maguey tree trunk. When Yupanqui traveled back to Copacabana, the town was under Spanish occupation, and both the Aymara and Quechua Indigenous people — now nationals from Bolivia and Peru — were at the site for evangelization purposes. 'She arrived at dawn on Feb. 2, and both the Aymara and the Incas bowed down to welcome her,' Cruz said. A shrine of faith, gratitude and generations of prayer The museum named after Yupanqui displays hundreds of gifts that devotees have presented over the centuries. These include capes embroidered with gold thread, votive offerings, letters in braille and silver crowns resembling those Simón Bolívar melted down to secure Bolivian independence in 1825. 'Our Lady of Copacabana is the mother who welcomes all of her children regardless of their race or culture,' said Itamar Pesoa, a Franciscan friar residing at the convent adjacent to the basilica. 'Within Bolivia, she is the queen.' According to Pesoa, pilgrims travel from all over South America to present her with offerings. Some women who were unable to have children thank her for enabling them to become mothers. Others praise her for helping them recover from serious illnesses. Several Masses in her honor are celebrated daily starting Aug. 4. 'This devotion continues to be passed down from generation to generation and inspires many to follow Christ,' Pesoa said. Yupanqui's original figure has not left the basilica for a procession since her coronation in 1925, but devotees revere her replicas nonetheless. In a nearby chapel, parishioners light candles — one per miracle requested — and patiently wait for them to burn out before leaving. Sandra Benavides, who traveled from the Peruvian city of Cuzco, lit a candle and prayed for good health. She said some years ago she fell and the accident nearly killed her, but the Virgin interceded. 'Our Lady of Copacabana is miraculous,' Benavides said. Tourists warned over increasingly common passport mistake
By For some tourists, getting their passport stamped at iconic or dreamy destinations is like a badge of honor. Many use them as a way of keeping track of all the different places they've visited across the globe, almost like a souvenir. However, travelers have been warned to avoid collecting 'novelty' stamps in their official passports. At some popular destinations such as Machu Picchu, in Peru, tourists may be offered unofficial stamps as a memento of their visit. Other places include Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, in Wales and Checkpoint Charlie, Berlin . But what my appear to be a harmless addition to your passport could actually land you in trouble with border control, as some countries see these stamps as tampering or even a potential security concern. There have been instances where tourists have had to replace their passport because a foreign border official considers it damaged or altered. Jamie Fraser, an American summer camp director at Wildpacks, explained how the popular stamps have become problematic for some travelers. He said: 'Souvenir stamps have become a bit of a badge of honor for travelers — they look cool, they feel like part of the adventure. 'But the second you let someone stamp your passport who isn't a border official, you're not adding a memory — you're risking the whole document being declared invalid.' He added: 'If your passport includes anything not placed there by an official, you're at the mercy of each border's interpretation. For something that takes up just one square inch, it can cause a world of trouble.' The UK Government considers unofficial stamps, markings or writing as passport damage, according to Wildpacks. Torn or missing pages are also counted, as well as faded or unreadable information. Ink stains or water damage on passports is seen as damage, and loose or separated covers. It's recommended that travelers ask for the souvenir stamps on a piece of paper or postcard, instead of their passport. Tourists are also urged against marking passports themselves, as even small doodles or messages could case issues. A page-by-page check is also recommended before flying, to ensure everything is in order and there are no unfamiliar marks or stamps.
