Seni Kita's thrift market out to promote eco-consumerism in community
The 'Seni Kita: Think Thrift' programme will be taking place at HAUS KCH's premises in Yun Phin Building, at Jalan Padungan in Kuching, this weekend.
KUCHING (May 20): It will be a highlight of eco-consciousness at the HAUS KCH here this weekend, where the movement will be holding a vintage-themed thrift market that advocates sustainability, recycling and also thrifting.
Taking place at HAUS KCH's premises in Yun Phin Building, at Jalan Padungan here, this Saturday and Sunday, the 'Seni Kita: Think Thrift' aims to breathe new life into preloved treasures and at the same time, it sets out to promote eco-conscious consumer habits within the community.
Open from 1pm to 10pm daily, the event is set to feature a curated thrift market, a thrift bundle section, a live styling booth, a spin-the-bottle activity, a karaoke session, and nightly performances consisting of 'Mighty Desk' and 'Word of Mouth'.
Seni Kita programme coordinator Christy Yang remarked: 'Thrifting has become a popular trend among young people in Kuching.
'Over the past two years, we've received several requests to organise a thrift market under Seni Kita, and I'm excited to say that we've finally made it happen.
'As always, we're starting on a smaller scale, with hopes of expanding to more venues in the future.
'We're doing thrift because it's more than just affordable shopping – it's a way to promote sustainability, support local families, and build a culture of sharing.
'In our community, where every resource counts, the thrift market brings people together and helps us all make the most of what we have.'
In conjunction with this thrift market, Seni Kita has also launched a public donation drive, inviting the community to contribute their preloved items.
The accepted categories, according to Yang, include clothing, accessories, household items, and trinkets.
'Electronics, furniture and books will not be accepted,' she pointed out.
'These donated items will be resold during the 'Seni Kita: Think Thrift' at bundled or discounted prices, and the proceeds will go towards supporting future creative programmes and youth-focused initiatives at HAUS KCH,' she added.
Donation drop-offs are tomorrow and Thursday (May 21-22), from 11am to 5pm daily.
Bookings must be made in advance by calling Aaron on 014-885 5320.
Adding to the weekend's checklist, a live styling photo-booth will be available for visitors to check their fit and snap a commemorative selfie or group photo. A photographer will be on hand to assist, and Polaroid snapshots will be available for RM15 each.
The poetry collaboration between HAUS KCH and the Wordsmiths of Kuching will also be featured at the 'Seni Kita: Think Thrift'.
The spin-the-bottle activity invites visitors to try their luck, going on at 1pm, 4pm, and 7pm on each day.
'Each visitor gets one free spin per session with a chance to win a prize. Additional spins can be unlocked with a small donation,' said Yang.
For the karaoke sessions, each token donation gets each participant a song of their choice.
Following the successful debut of the 'Mighty Desk' during the previous 'Seni Kita: Open HAUS', the second edition is being run in collaboration with AOK Records.
'This new series of music performances will be headlined by Steff Fleur. Mighty Desk 2.0 will take place this Saturday, from 8pm to 10pm, with tickets priced at RM20 apiece,' said Yang.
Meanwhile, the monthly poetry collaboration between HAUS KCH and the Wordsmiths of Kuching, which kicked off in March, continues with alternating sessions of 'First Reading' and 'Word of Mouth'. The 'Seni Kita: Think Thrift' edition of 'Word of Mouth' will be held in this Sunday (May 25), going on from 8pm to 10pm.
Meanwhile, 12 local thrift vendors will be taking part in 'Pasar Seni Kita' including Ta-men, Thrifty Treasures, Preloved by Joyce and Mars Lets Go.
'There is something for everyone, from fashion and accessories, to books and household items, to food and beverages,' said Yang.
Seni Kita Weekend is a community-driven arts festival initiated by HAUS KCH in July 2022.

Chinese drone maker EHang sees flying taxis take off by 2030 on the mainland
EHang, which is conducting trials in Guangzhou and Hefei, will offer services in restricted corridors in these two cities by year-end. — SCMP Flying taxis could be used for public transport within the next five years on the mainland, according to a senior executive of Chinese passenger drone maker EHang Holdings. 'I believe that by 2030, China will likely have fixed-route air shuttle services,' chief financial officer Conor Yang said in an interview on Tuesday. 'It's also possible that in some cities, with sufficient infrastructure such as take-off and landing points, air taxi services could emerge.' The Nasdaq-listed developer of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for urban air mobility and joint venture partner Hefei Heyi Aviation in March became the first companies in the world to receive certification from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) to operate autonomous passenger drones. Yang said EHang was conducting trial flights in Guangzhou and Hefei to collect and analyse data before it starts operating in designated areas in these two cities by the end of this year. The Guangzhou-based company has received certification for its twin-passenger EH216-S aircraft, which has a top speed of 130km/h and a range of 30km. The EH216-S is available for 2.39mil yuan (RM1.41mil or US$331,000) on Chinese e-commerce platform Taobao. 'We are seeing strong interest in our services overseas, particularly in the Middle East, Southeast Asia and even Latin America,' Yang said. He said EHang was in discussions with Thailand's civil aviation authorities to operate eVTOLs in designated areas in the country after it completed its maiden passenger flight in Bangkok in November. Largest China-Russia Land Port Reinvents Itself as Industrial Hub
HOHHOT, CHINA - Media OutReach Newswire - 21 May 2025 - As China's largest land port, Manzhouli is expanding beyond its traditional role as a 'transit station.' By promoting local processing of grain, oil and timber, the city is steadily evolving into a regional industrial hub. At Manzhouli Xinfeng Grain and Oil Industry Co., Ltd., freshly imported rapeseed from Russia is processed on intelligent production lines. From dehulling to pressing, the procedures run smoothly, as golden rapeseed oil gently streams into storage tanks. 'As soon as the raw materials clear customs, we go straight into production, operating around the clock,' said Yang Zhihong, deputy general manager of the company. He noted that Russian rapeseed oil, prized for its low acid value and high smoke point, is particularly popular among domestic downstream enterprises. This 'Russian supply, Chinese processing' model is fueling a growing shift among local businesses, pushing them beyond mere trade toward more advanced, value-added processing. Yang crunched the numbers. 'By importing raw materials through 'border trade', a special policy that allows residents in border areas to conduct small-scale cross-border trade under simplified customs procedures, we save an average of 500 yuan (about 69.5 U.S. dollars) per tonne. Since last year, that's added up to savings of over 8 million yuan,' he explained. This model cuts traditional trade taxes and fees from around 18 percent to less than 4 percent of total costs. It enables enterprises to source raw materials at lower prices, while border residents earn income from the price difference, creating a win-win supply chain involving border residents, cooperatives and enterprises. The cluster will provide high-end, premium chemical intermediates for domestic advanced polymer materials and engineering plastics, injecting new momentum into the city's economic development. Bai Zhiping, an official from the Manzhouli municipal commerce bureau, said that Manzhouli's transformation from a 'transit station' to an 'industrial hub' reflects the development of the port-based processing model. An increasing number of enterprises are moving beyond the traditional 'transit economy' and are leveraging the advantages of the border to create a new industrial ecosystem focused on deep processing. In the first quarter of this year, Manzhouli's import and export freight volume reached 6.53 million tonnes, a year-on-year increase of 10.6 percent.
