State to roll out 299 interstate buses for festivals
Patna: To ease festival travel for migrants and improve interstate connectivity, CM Nitish Kumar on Thursday announced that the Bihar govt will operate 299 buses connecting the state to major destinations in neighbouring states.
The initiative is expected to address the long-standing difficulties faced by migrant workers and residents returning home during major festivals such as Chhath, Holi, Diwali and Durga Puja.
Taking to X, the CM wrote, "People from Bihar return home in large numbers from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and West Bengal during various festivals, especially Chhath, Holi, Diwali and Durga Puja. They face difficulties travelling to Bihar during these times.
To ease their journey and provide convenience, our govt is making continuous efforts. As part of this, the state government will operate 299 AC and non-AC buses on inter-state routes connected to Bihar.

This plan was formally approved during the cabinet meeting held on June 24. The CM added that the govt will request the Centre to run additional special trains during the festive period to further support travel demands.

Of the total 299 buses, 75 air-conditioned deluxe and 74 non-AC deluxe buses will be procured by the state govt at a cost of Rs 105 crore. An additional 150 AC buses will be operated under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
According to an official release from the transport department, the buses will primarily operate on routes to Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and West Bengal. "This will provide safer, more accessible, and more reliable public transport for citizens, especially migrant workers," the statement said.
Transport secretary Sandeep Kumar R Pudkalkatti said the enhanced bus services would strengthen interstate public transport through the Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC). "The operation of modern and comfortable buses will make travel more convenient, safe, and affordable. It will also generate local employment opportunities," he said.
He added that the daily passenger capacity of the newly introduced fleet — comprising 75 AC and 74 non-AC deluxe buses — will be around 6,000. Additionally, 150 more AC buses are expected to be operational during peak seasons such as Durga Puja, Chhath and Holi.
At present, BSRTC operates 17 buses to Ranchi and two to Jamshedpur. The new additions are expected to vastly expand the reach and efficiency of Bihar's interstate public transport system.

CESC makes smart meters mandatory for new connections from July 1
Mysuru: The Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) has initiated a significant upgrade in its power distribution system across its jurisdiction. Starting from July 1, it is compulsory for new power consumers to install smart meters at their own cost. Smart power meters aim for better energy management. However, it is still not clear about switching over to smart meters for existing customers in its jurisdiction of five districts, including Mysuru, Mandya, Hassan, Chamarajanagar, and Kodagu. Ramaswamy, general manager of the IT wing of CESC, informed TOI that smart meter installation is mandatory for all new customers from July, and the consumer must bear the expenses of the smart meters, which would cost approximately Rs 5,000. Smart meters provide options for consumers to either pay the power bill after usage or opt for prepaid, wherein the consumers have to charge the account to use power. At any time, a consumer can switch over from prepaid to postpaid or vice versa. Smart meters are compulsory across all installations in the jurisdiction of CESC, which currently has about 25 lakh individual connections in five districts. The smart meters will enable real-time tracking of power consumption, allowing both consumers and CESC officials to monitor usage patterns effectively. These digital devices will automatically record energy consumption at regular intervals and transmit the data to the central system using a standalone network. Smart meters include accurate billing, elimination of manual meter reading, quick detection of power theft, and reduced technical losses. Consumers can access their consumption data through mobile applications and web portals, helping them manage their electricity usage more efficiently. The initiative aligns with the national smart grid mission, aiming to modernise the power sector through digital technology, and Karnataka is the latest to become a smart consumer metering state. Consumer meeting CESC has organised a customer meeting at its office in Vijayanagar in west Mysuru on Friday to educate consumers about smart meters and to clear doubts regarding it.

$100 million boost for drone startup Raphe mPhibr
Bengaluru: Indian drone startup Raphe mPhibr raised $100 million, led by General Catalyst, marking the largest private fundraise in the sector by an Indian company to date. Cybercrooks dupe 79-year-old Bengaluru woman of Rs 35 lakh in AI trading scam
Bengaluru: A 79-year-old woman from Seshadripuram, central Bengaluru, lost nearly Rs 35 lakh to fraudsters operating a sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) trading scam. The gang not only cheated her of her savings over eight months but also tried to extort more by threatening her with a fabricated money-laundering case. Archana (name changed) approached Central CEN Crime police for help in recovering her money. She told police she came across a Facebook advertisement promoting AI-based trading. The post featured deepfake videos of Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy endorsing trading platforms. On clicking the link, she was contacted by a woman claiming to be an executive of a UK-based AI trading firm that the deepfake videos had endorsed. The fraudsters created a convincing facade: They registered an account in Archana's name on a fake but professional-looking website, gave her login credentials and assigned her a financial manager named Varun. He claimed the company would credit money to users' accounts as a promotional strategy, which could be withdrawn after clearing the credited amount. The only condition was that when the customer withdrew money, they needed to clear the credit. On the homepage, they provided updates on cryptocurrency, and on another page, they displayed stock market updates. Initially, Archana invested 200 dollars in Indian currency to a bank account provided by Varun. After confirming the investment and seeing the profit displayed in her account, she transferred more money, equalling 400 dollars. Archana told TOI, "I didn't invest further or try to withdraw the money for six months. The fraudsters would frequently make WhatsApp calls and explain they were going to purchase companies at a loss and, after a few months, resell them to other firms that were in profit. They mentioned the names of big brands in India." The scamsters started calling her from different numbers starting with +44 — all WhatsApp calls — and began enquiring about her investment in AI trading. She would disconnect the calls, informing them that she'd invested in only one firm. In April, they showed her that the total amount in her account was over Rs 1 crore (in US dollars). They told her Varun had been sacked for committing fraud in trading. Another financial manager named Ajay Sharma was assigned, and he started forcing her to clear the credit and claim the huge amount, Archana told police. "I had some commitments, so I thought of withdrawing the money. They told me they had transferred the dollars to another person named FX, who would convert it into Indian currency and credit it to my account. For that, they asked me to pay Rs 4 lakh as declaration charge. I borrowed money from my daughter and son and paid them. They again told me Varun had committed multiple frauds and sent me screenshots of the same. They asked for Rs 9 lakh more to clear dues and I again borrowed money from my children and paid them, losing over Rs 34.6 lakh in total. "
