New North Lanarkshire Council's business grants programmes open for applications
North Lanarkshire Council's new business grant scheme is now open for applications with £1.150 million available to help businesses to start up and grow over the next year.
The Business Start Up Fund can provide funding of up to £3000 to businesses about to start or those that have been operating for less than 12 months.
The Business Growth Fund offers funding of up to £20,000 towards capital expenditure and/or infrastructure costs. Up to £5000 is available for workforce or skills development and up to £4000 funding is available towards the cost of attendance at trade shows or exhibitions.
The grant funds are open to businesses based in North Lanarkshire operating in the following key sectors: advancing manufacturing, construction, creative industries, food and drink (manufacturing and processing), health and social care, life sciences, renewable energy, social enterprise, tourism and transport and logistics.
Projects that help boost productivity, improve operating efficiencies, enhance trading capabilities and help local businesses to digitise and embrace net zero ambitions are encouraged.
Councillor Alex McVey, Convener of Enterprise and Fair Work Committee at North Lanarkshire Council, said: 'Businesses are vital to growing the local economy.
'We know from our previous grant funding schemes how beneficial they are to help local businesses to innovate, invest and grow, and in turn employ more people.
'We, therefore, encourage businesses looking to expand or those looking to start a business, to get in touch to discuss how this funding could help.'
The previous funding programme helped 198 businesses to start up or grow with over £1.3 million of funding through North Lanarkshire Council and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
Restrictions apply to businesses that have received grant funding from North Lanarkshire Council in the last 24 months.

Work begins on new council home development in Millerston
Work has begun on the site at Coshneuk Road in Millerton, as part of North Lanarkshire Council's wider plan to deliver 6000 homes by 2035. The properties will include a mix of one and two-bedroom flats, as well as two, three, and four-bedroom houses and a bungalow designed for disabled access. Councillor Michael McPake, housing convener, said: "It's always pleasing to mark the beginning of another new council housing project which will deliver more new homes for our tenants, particularly in an area of high demand. "We're making significant progress in delivering our new supply programme, providing jobs, boosting the local economy, and building homes for our tenants now and for generations to come. "It's all part of our ambition to make North Lanarkshire the place to live, and I look forward to watching the new homes progress." Expected to be completed by spring 2026, the development will feature ground source heat pumps to reduce heating emissions, along with triple-glazed windows, high levels of insulation, and solar panels. The homes are designed to meet Housing for Varying Needs standards, allowing them to adapt to residents' changing requirements, and are built to Secure by Design principles to improve safety and security. Farmers invited to take part in North Wales tech trials
The on-farm trials will test 'smart' agriculture technology, focusing on Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) systems as part of the Smart Agriculture Internet of Things (IoT) project. The initiative is being funded by taxpayers via the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and delivered by Mentera on behalf of Ambition North Wales. Siwan Howaston, head of technical at Mentera, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for farmers in North Wales to be at the forefront of agricultural innovation. "The adoption of technologies like LoRaWAN is crucial for creating more resilient, productive, and sustainable farm businesses. "We encourage all interested farmers to apply and help us build a more technologically advanced future for agriculture in North Wales." The scheme aims to help improve efficiency, productivity, and sustainability by integrating IoT-based solutions into daily farm operations. According to Mentera, LoRaWAN technology could help support remote monitoring and management of livestock, water systems, soil health, and infrastructure. For example, real-time soil moisture and temperature sensors could guide optimal slurry application, helping to reduce environmental risk and improve compliance with regulations. The organisation says sensors could detect water tank levels and identify leaks to help prevent loss and infrastructure damage. The technology is also being touted as a way of support livestock tracking, infrastructure monitoring, and the remote management of gates and machinery. Farms participating in the trials will receive technical support from an agri-tech specialist to implement and assess the solutions. The programme is open to farms in the dairy, red meat, pig, poultry, arable, and horticulture sectors across Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd, Anglesey, and Wrexham. Cllr Nia Jeffreys, lead member for Ambition North Wales's Digital Connectivity Programme and leader of Cyngor Gwynedd, said: "The transformative potential of this project is significant for the farmers involved. "All equipment is provided and installed, with the option to continue with use if they find the trial to be beneficial – so there could be much to gain." Trials are scheduled to begin in September and continue through to February 1, 2026. Mentera is now looking for 16 farms across north Wales to join the new network.
