President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the creation of an Inter-Agency Task Force that will lead the country's preparation for hosting the FIFA Futsal Women's World Cup (FFWWC) 2025.
The Philippines is set to host the FFWWC for the first time from Nov. 21 to Dec. 7, where Pasig City and Victorias City in Negros Occidental will serve as host venues for the 16 top women's national teams.
Signed on July 30 by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, Administrative Order (AO) No. 35 stated that the task force will serve as the central coordinating body for concerned government agencies, local government units (LGUs), and private units in planning, organizing, and executing the international futsal tournament.
Marcos directed the Philippine Sports Commission to be the chair and secretariat of the task force, while the Department of the Interior and Local Government will serve as the vice chair.

The task force is directed to plan, implement, and procure materials for the tournament.
It is also tasked with coordinating plans and activities and forming an executive committee, if needed, to oversee operations.
The task force is authorized to accept donations, contributions, grants, and gifts from domestic and international sources, in accordance with existing laws and regulations.
All national government agencies, state universities and colleges, and government-owned and -controlled corporations (GOCCs) are directed to provide support and assistance to the task force.
Meanwhile, LGUs and private sector partners are urged to support the initiative.
The funds for the implementation of the event will come from the available budgets of the concerned agencies, following existing financial laws and regulations.
'The hosting of the FFWWC 2025 aims to advance the development of futsal in the country, inspire greater sports engagement among Filipinos, elevate the Philippines' standing in the international sports arena, and generate economic and tourism opportunities through a globally recognized event,' the AO read. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/KG, GMA Integrated News

Marcos declares Paoay Lake a protected area

A view of Paoay Lake from Malacañang of the North. (File photo) President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. has declared Paoay Lake in Ilocos Norte a protected area to ensure its conservation, protection, management, and rehabilitation. In signing Republic Act 12230 on August 4, Marcos said the Paoay Lake Protected Landscape (PLPL) was 'in recognition of the richness of biological resources, both flora and fauna, that are native and distinct to Paoay Lake as well as their aesthetic and ecological importance.' Ilocos Norte is the hometown of the President. According to the law, it is the State's policy to secure the perpetual existence of all native plants and animals for Filipinos' present and future generations through the declaration of protected areas under the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS). The law mandated the creation of the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB). Some of its members are the regional executive director of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the provincial governor, senators who are Ilocos Norte residents, the representative of the congressional district that includes the PLPL, and the mayor of Paoay. The Board's responsibilities include overseeing the management of the PLPL, approving policies, plans, and programs for the area's management, allocating financial resources for the implementation of the management plan, and setting fees and charges. The Protected Area Management Office (PAMO) will supervise daily management, protection, and administration of the PLPL. The law also established the Paoay Lake Protected Landscape Integrated Protected Area Fund (PLPL-IPAF) to support projects and operations. Funding will be provided by the permitted sale and export of flora and fauna and other resources from the PLPL, the leasing of multiple-use areas, contributions from businesses and facilities that directly benefit from the PLPL, and other fees collected from PLPL operations. The fund may be augmented by grants, donations, and endowments from various domestic and foreign sources and shall be deposited as a special account in the National Treasury. —VBL, GMA Integrated News

Marcos signs law optimizing government operations

President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. signed into law a measure seeking to optimize the national government to ensure efficient delivery of public services. Republic Act 12231 or the Government Optimization Act was signed by the President on August 4 Under the new law, optimization is defined as the process of analyzing and designing the appropriate roles, mandates, structures, functions, sizes, systems, and processes of government agencies to ensure effective, responsive, and efficient service delivery. The law aims to minimize, if not eliminate, redundancies, overlaps, and duplications in its operations and simplify its rules and regulations, systems and processes, while protecting the welfare of civil servants and other government workers. It shall cover all agencies of the Executive Branch, including departments, bureaus, offices, commissions, boards, councils, and all other entities attached to or under their administrative supervision, and government-owned or -controlled corporations (GOCCs) not covered by Republic Act 10149 or the GOCC Governance Act of 2011. Teachers and teaching-related jobs in elementary, secondary, technical or vocational schools, state universities and colleges, and non-chartered tertiary schools are not covered by the law, nor are uniformed personnel of the Department of National Defense, the Department of the Interior and Local Government, the Department of Transportation, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the Department of Justice. Employees in excluded positions must meet the qualifications and be carrying out their duties, the law said. The Congress, judiciary, constitutional commissions, and the Office of the Ombudsman, may optimize their respective offices, it added. A whole-of-nation approach shall be adopted to ensure seamless operations of agencies within and across sectors to better anticipate and be more responsive to public needs. Further, government operations shall be simplified so that the agencies can focus on the performance of their core functions and the implementation of programs and projects that will lead to the attainment of the desired sectoral and national goals and outcomes. It also said that government systems and processes shall be streamlined and modernized to facilitate the delivery and upgrade the quality of frontline services, improve policy formulation, planning, and performance evaluation, and raise the overall productivity of the public sector. Moreover, digitalization and e-governance shall be utilized as a means to efficiently optimize government roles and provide prompt and effective services to the people. Under the new law, the Committee on Optimizing the Executive Branch will also be created to oversee the implementation of the Government Optimization Program (GOP), pursuant to the provisions of this Act. The COEB shall be chaired by the Executive Secretary. The Department of Budget and Management shall commission an independent impact assessment of the GOP, which will be conducted three years after its completion, to determine the effects and gains of its implementation. —VBL, GMA Integrated News

Gilas Pilipinas eyes payback vs. Chinese Taipei to kick off FIBA Asia Cup campaign

With memories of a heartbreaking loss from their previous meeting still fresh, the Gilas Pilipinas national men's basketball team is gearing up to turn the tables on Chinese Taipei this time around as the Filipinos open their campaign in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup. Gilas takes on Chinese Taipei on Wednesday at 2 a.m. (Philippine time) looking to jumpstart its regional tournament run with a strong performance led by usual suspects Justin Brownlee, Scottie Thompson, CJ Perez, June Mar Fajardo, and Dwight Ramos. READ MORE | Gilas Pilipinas at 2025 FIBA Asia Cup: Schedule vs Chinese Taipei, New Zealand, and Iraq Gilas suffered a 91-84 loss to the same team during the third window of the Asia Cup qualifiers last February with Chinese Taipei's sharp shooter Chun Hsiang Lu knocking down the dagger triple in the final 49 seconds. That loss was the Philippines' first defeat to Chinese Taipei since 2013. That's why their impending rematch at the Asia Cup will carry added weight, not just as the opening game of their campaign but as a shot at redemption. Gilas caught a break as sharpshooter Lu Chun-hsiang was left out of Chinese Taipei's official Asia Cup roster, though the East Asian side will have US-based brothers Robert and Adam Hinton to take the lead. "Taiwan beat us the last time we played them and they have two young Division 1 players and those guys are making impact on that team," Gilas head coach Tim Cone said a week ago. "They definitely have the personnel, it wasn't a fluke that they beat us. So we have to be prepared for them." Gilas is heading to Asia Cup armed with two morale-boosting wins against the Macau Black Bears and Jordan in their friendly matches. The Filipinos erased a 21-point deficit to eke out a 103-98 win against the Black Bears last Monday with Brownlee, Ramos, Perez, and AJ Edu fueling the comeback in the absence of Fajardo and Calvin Oftana. ?They then carved a 75-61 victory over Jordan in another tune-up game in Jeddah. The world no. 34 Filipinos are now hoping to translate this momentum when they meet no. 73 Chinese Taipei anew. ?Completing Gilas' Asia Cup crew are Chris Newsome, Jamie Malonzo, Japeth Aguilar, Kevin Quiambao, and Carl Tamayo. Fajardo and Oftana are also both listed on the roster but there is some uncertainty about their availability as the two players sat out their game against Macau to recover from a grueling finals series between their mother clubs, San Miguel and TNT, in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup. Gilas is competing in Group D of the competition along with Chinese Taipei, New Zealand, and Iraq. —JMB, GMA Integrated News
