Baghel challenges ED, CBI powers in SC, fears arrest & seeks anticipatory bail

Time of India4 hours ago
Raipur: AICC general secretary and former Chhattisgarh chief minister
Bhupesh Baghel
has approached the
Supreme Court
to challenge the jurisdiction and powers of the CBI and
ED
, while also seeking anticipatory bail in cases under investigation by the ED, CBI, and the state Economic Offences Wing (EOW).
The case is set for a hearing on Monday.
Baghel's application follows the arrest of his son, Chaitanya Baghel, by the ED in connection with an alleged Rs 2,100 crore liquor scam. A close aide of the former chief minister told TOI that the plea primarily aims to contest the ED and CBI's authority, alongside the anticipatory bail petition.
In his petition, Baghel stated that he fears being targeted for political reasons, similar to his son Chaitanya Baghel, who was taken into custody by the ED last month.
Despite seeking protection from arrest in both the liquor scam and the Mahadev betting app cases, Baghel has assured full cooperation with the investigating agencies.
Meanwhile, Chaitanya Baghel, currently held in Raipur jail, has also filed a bail petition in the Supreme Court. His counsel, Faizal Rizvi, informed TOI that Chaitanya's plea asserts that his name does not appear in the ED's FIR or any witness statements and claims that his arrest is politically motivated.

Chaitanya's judicial remand is due to conclude on Monday, after which he will be presented in court. The ED is anticipated to request an extension.
The ED arrested Chaitanya on July 18, 2024, under Section 19 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. His arrest coincided with his 38th birthday and followed what the agency described as new evidence in the alleged scam.
According to Rizvi, while the ED alleged that Chaitanya received an interest-free loan of Rs 5 crore from a jeweller, documents submitted in February 2025 indicate that the loan was repaid with interest.
The ED further claimed that proceeds from the liquor scam were invested in Chaitanya's real estate project.
Earlier this year, the ED raided Bhupesh Baghel's residence in connection with the liquor scam. A month later, the CBI conducted searches at his home regarding the Mahadev betting app case. Raids were also carried out at the residences of his former OSDs.

SP functionary booked for teaching ‘A for Akhilesh' in ‘PDA pathshala'

Lucknow: A case was registered against Samajwadi Party (SP) functionary Farhad Alam for allegedly operating an illegal 'PDA Pathshala' (school) in Saharanpur and teaching children political slogans in place of standard educational content. The FIR, filed at Dehat Kotwali police station, came after a complaint was lodged by a local youth, Maan Singh. According to the complaint, children at the school were being taught "A for Akhilesh", "D for Dimple Yadav" and "M for Mulayam Singh Yadav". These references to SP leaders sparked public outrage and hurt sentiments, leading to accusations of politicising education. The controversy erupted just days after the Yogi Adityanath govt faced criticism over proposed school mergers, which were later rolled back. Seizing the opportunity, Farhad Gada claimed he was educating children who were at home due to school closures. However, investigation revealed that the children seen in the viral video were brought in from a private school and were never affected by any school shutdowns. Gada transformed his residence in Ramnagar village into the so-called 'PDA Pathshala' and released a video showing uniformed children reciting politically charged alphabets. He defended his actions, saying, "Just as convent schools have their own curriculum, our PDA Pathshala introduces children to socialist ideology. We teach A for Akhilesh, D for Dimple, B for Babasaheb, and M for Mulayam." He further claimed he intended to take the model across Saharanpur district, targeting villages with reportedly shut govt schools. However, before he could expand his initiative, an FIR was filed against him. Saharanpur SP City Vyom Bindal said, "Based on the complaint received, we have booked the accused for running an illegal school and teaching inappropriate material to children. The matter is under investigation, and appropriate action will be taken following due legal process." Farhad has been booked under BNS section 353 (2) (promote enmity, hatred, or ill will between different groups) and under ST/SC Act. Drone misuse will attract stern action: UP CM

Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday issued a stern warning against the misuse of drones in public spaces and said that people trying to spread panic or misinformation through such activities will face legal consequences, including action under the Gangsters Act and the National Security Act (NSA). Calling drone-related mischief a potential threat to public order, the CM said, "Any attempt to incite fear or spread rumours using drones will not be tolerated. The govt will deal strictly with such elements." The CM's statement comes amid growing concerns over unauthorised drone activity in various districts. He said that operating drones without official permission is strictly prohibited, and any violation would result in harsh punitive action. He asked the principal secretary (home) and the director general of police (DGP) to conduct a comprehensive review of drone-related activities and initiate immediate action in case of misuse of drones. He also ordered the implementation of a statewide drone monitoring system to ensure real-time surveillance and rapid response. "District-level law enforcement agencies must increase patrolling and maintain public trust by actively deterring the misuse of aerial surveillance technology," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Learn More Undo Yogi asserted that the govt supported the positive use of emerging technologies but would not hesitate to crack down on its malicious or unlawful use. "By tightening legal provisions and enhancing monitoring mechanisms, the state aims to create a deterrent against drone-related crimes, while assuring the public that law and order will not be compromised," a govt spokesperson said.
