‘We don't have much influence' – Tottenham star breaks ranks as he labels Ange Postecoglou sacking ‘strange'
MICKY VAN DE VEN has branded Tottenham's brutal axing of Ange Postecoglou as a 'strange decision'. Yet the decision to axe the Aussie is understood to have left many of the players disappointed given the success they enjoyed in Europe. And while on international duty with the Netherlands, centre-back 'Of course, he was the first coach in a long time to win a trophy and have success at Spurs. 'But it's a decision made by the club, and we don't have much say in that, so we'll see what happens next. 'We're of course seeing some rumpus about the Brentford manager likely becoming the next one. 'So yes, it's a decision by the club that we don't have much influence over.' They lost a club-record 22 league games, which was the first time ever a Prem team has managed that and NOT been relegated. BBC star shares shock theory as to why Tottenham waited exactly 16 days after Europa League win to sack Ange Postecoglou And yet Postecoglou ended the club's silverware curse with their Europa win, which also got them back into the Champions League. Advertisement Most of the Spurs squad have been effusive in their praise of Postecoglou on social media following his sacking and what he did for them as players and as people. Van de Ven, who missed much of the league campaign through injury, added: 'I think a lot of players had a good relationship with him. Ange Breaks Silence On Tottenham Sacking ANGE Postecoglou issued a statement just moments after being axed. It read: "When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham Hotspur, my overriding emotion is one of pride. "The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. "Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget. "That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream. "There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible. "We have also laid the foundations that means this club should not have to wait 17 more years for their next success. "I have enormous faith in this group of players and know there is much more potential and growth in them. I sincerely want to thank those who are the lifeblood of the club, the supporters. "I know there were some difficult times, but I always felt that they wanted me to succeed and that gave me all the motivation I needed to push on. "It's important to acknowledge the hard working people at Spurs who gave me encouragement on a daily basis. "And finally, I want to thank those who were with me every day for the last two years. "A fantastic group of young men who are now legends of this football club and the brilliant coaches who never once doubted we could do something special. 'We are forever connected. Audere est Facere.' 'And of course, like I said, he was the first coach in a long time to bring success to Spurs. 'That also shows he has a certain quality. It also means he has a winning mentality - one hundred per cent. Advertisement 'So from that point of view, you'd naturally say it's strange that he was sacked. 'But of course, what we showed in the league was unacceptable. 'That, however, could have been due to several factors… it wouldn't have just been the coach.'

Kyle Walker on verge of completing perfect England centurion XI – but Trent and Man City limbo put 100th cap at threat
KYLE WALKER may have had a shocker against Senegal - but he is now just four caps away from completing England's perfect centurion XI. The Manchester City veteran struggled badly on his 96th cap in Advertisement 8 Kyle Walker is on the verge of the England hundred club Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 8 Walker struggled during England's 3-1 defeat to Senegal on Tuesday It left many fans wondering if he will even make it to a 97th cap, let alone 100, although And should he manage to dust himself down and convince the German of giving him the quartet needed to reach a century, he will be the eleventh player in Three Lions history to make it to triple figures. And in a coincidental twist of fate, if Walker does hit 100 then he would be the final piece in the jigsaw to complete a tonne-up team. Harry Kane leads the line, having blasted an astonishing 73 goals in 107 caps, with his latest of each coming against the Senegalese. Advertisement But given the level of competition at full-back, including Walker also seems in limbo club-wise, with City not taking him to the Club World Cup and a return to AC Milan, where he spent the second half of the season on loan, looking off the cards. Tuchel feels the treble-winner's lack of recent action contributed to his dire display against the Senegalese where his touch was rusty and he looked uncharacteristically slow. But the former Chelsea boss remains a huge fan of Walker, which will give the full-back confidence his century dream can be realised. I think he deserved to play. Advertisement 'I see the lack of rhythm, clearly, the lack of rhythm in misjudgements and duels and anticipation, of course. 'That is also maybe the nature of a June camp and a player who does not have every minute in his legs lately and has struggled to come back because of injury and the contract situation when he was just on loan.' 8 Thomas Tuchel has backed Kyle Walker despite his poor performance against Senegal Credit: Alamy 8 Advertisement

Ireland goalkeeper savouring first cap after six years involved with squad
Max O'Leary is going to savour the moment as he knows they might be few and far between. The Bristol City goalkeeper made his Ireland debut in Tuesday's drab 0-0 draw away to Luxembourg - six years after his first call-up. New Brentford signing Caoimin Kelleher was rested by Heimir Hallgrimsson and O'Leary got a late nod to let family know he would be starting. They scrambled last minute flights and his parents were at Stade de Luxembourg to savour a landmark moment in their son's career. But with Kelleher in such good form, O'Leary knows it will be difficult to force his way into the team for the World Cup qualifiers in September. And not only that, but Gavin Bazunu and Mark Travers were left out of this squad to rest and recuperate and will be back in the fold. O'Leary, who made two impressive saves, said: 'I've seen a few managers, been in lots of camps so it's finally nice to get that first cap. A big occasion for me. 'I took it in my stride and just wanted to enjoy it more than anything. Not think too much about the outcome. Stay in the present. Have a bit of fun out there.' O'Leary, 28, continued: 'Knowing you might not play, but still turning up, and working every day, I love doing it, I love working hard to help others out when I need to. 'When it is my time, I'm ready to go. I've tried to be patient. I've been patient pretty much my whole career. 'I'm a bit older now so I know how the game works - you come in and it is something different, being with the boys, different coaches and you can learn off great players. 'Caoimh has been really great with me this week. So has Josh (Keeley). We know there are other lads waiting as well, there is a good unit there.' Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrimsson left most of the Championship players out of this squad, as he was reluctant to risk injury as they are a month out of season. O'Leary, clubmate Jason Knight and Robbie Brady were the exceptions from England's second tier and while Brady came off early with an injury, it's not serious. But O'Leary had no issue delaying his summer holiday to make himself available for Ireland and said: 'I feel I can bring something to the group. This time I got my chance. 'Anyone can play but it is rare to see a goalkeeper come on for a five, ten minute run around cameo. When you play you've got to stick in there and make it your own. 'I know the quality we have in this department. We are really lucky. I'll do whatever I need to do and whatever I need to help.'
