US praises Malaysia's Asean chair role in Thai-Cambodia ceasefire talks
US Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard Kagan said Malaysia's leadership was evident in the successful hosting of today's Extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting, which brought the concerned parties together.
"This is yet another example of the important role played by Malaysia as Asean chair in facilitating engagement between both sides.
"All parties deeply appreciate Malaysia's leadership, including the direct involvement of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the highest level, and the tireless efforts of Armed Forces chief General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar.
"The Malaysian military worked closely with their Thai and Cambodian counterparts to reach this agreement," he told reporters after the meeting at Wisma Perwira today.
Kagan also gave assurance that the US would continue working closely with Malaysia in its role as Asean chair, as well as with other member states, to ensure the regional bloc plays an effective role in uniting the two countries.
He said that while the ceasefire agreement marked a significant milestone, it was only the beginning of a longer process.
"The ultimate goal is to reach a sustainable and lasting ceasefire, accepted and enforced by both sides.
"The mechanism currently in place is crucial in ensuring that the monitoring process is smooth, transparent and effective.
"More importantly, we believe what has happened reflects a genuine commitment from both governments, and the US will closely monitor this to ensure that commitment is sustained," he said.
Kagan added that President Donald Trump placed the highest priority on the Thai-Cambodian conflict, believing that any form of war or confrontation would benefit no party.
Malaysia, the US, and China were observers at today's Extraordinary GBC Meeting.

Editor's Note: This is the reaction by DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) in response to UMNO Youth chief Datuk Muhamad Akmal Saleh over the latest flag blunder incident in Taman Bertam Perdana in Kepala Batas, Penang. Following the latest incident of yet another Jalur Gemilang being flown upside down after an earlier one involving SJKC Chung Hua in Port Dickson, the outspoken defender of race and religion has rallied his movement to 'march down' to mainland Penang to school the 'two Ah Peks (elderly uncles) on how to fly the Malaysian flag'. THE national level DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) strongly condemn the statement of UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh who urged the public to 'visit' a business premise located in Kepala Batas, Penang 'to right' the issue of the Jalur Gemilang being hung upside down. This action not only gives the impression that Dr Akmal wants to act like an authority but such an approach itself does not uphold the rule of law. National DAPSY therefore slams the hypocritical and double-standard attitude shown by Dr Akmal on the Jalur Gemilang issue. Has the Melaka state EXCO ever mobilised the public to 'visit' the Education Ministry (MOE) and the Terengganu PAS headquarters which have also committed mistakes of a similar nature? The answer is negative which clearly shows how hypocritical the current UMNO Youth chief is. Malaysia is a constitutional country based on the rule of law. Any action that violates the law or regulations – including blunders in the flying of the Jalur Gemilang – should be dealt with according to existing procedures and regulations, not through actions that involve intimidation or 'mob justice'. 'Political gimmick' Patriotic awareness cannot be fostered through threats but through consistent education. DAPSY insists that action should be taken against lawbreakers in a manner consistent with the law. However, the act of magnifying the issue and mobilising the public to 'teach the perpetrators a lesson' is just a political gimmick that does not benefit national unity. A representative of the people should play a role in uniting the people, not causing tension. DAPSY believes that errors in flying the national flag constitutes an action that must be punished according to the law. However, what is dangerous to the society today is the attitude of some politicians like Dr Akmal who chooses to politicise such issues for personal gain. Our country does not need 'moral police'; instead, Malaysia needs leaders who prioritise peace, harmony and the integrity of the law. On this note, National DAPSY calls on all parties, especially Dr Akmal who has repeatedly divided the multi-racial community, to stop the culture of confrontational politics which only creates hatred and division. Kuala Lumpur: Singapore today seceded from the two-year old Federation of Malaysia and announced it would like to settle any differences with Indonesia if the agreement would 'not endanger us' (In Jakarta, Indonesian leaders hailed the breakup of the Federation as a victory for Indonesia's campaign against Malaysia. Foreign Minister Subandrio said Indonesia probably would recognise Singapore and continue to seek the complete destruction of Malaysia.) Advertisement Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew said after announcing his government's secession: 'We want to be friends with Indonesia. We would like to settle any differences with Indonesia, but we must survive. 'We must be sure that we cannot be overrun or invaded by an army or rockets or missiles. It is important that we want to be friends in spite of all that had happened.' A few hours after Lee announced secession, Kuala Lumpur's Federal Parliament passed a constitutional amendment making Singapore independent as of today. Advertisement It was announced that Bri-tain's important military bases on Singapore would remain intact, as would those of Malaysia, pending a new agreement among the three governments. Malaysia reserved the right to take action if Singapore engaged in activities which threatened Malaysia. Malaysian Prime Minister Tunku Abdul. Rahman stressed that potential racial trouble was the major reason for Singapore's separation during his speech to Parliament and a news conference seven hours later. He said there were two courses open: Singapore's withdrawal or 'repressive measures' against Singapore leaders. In the end, he said, repressive measures might not solve the problem and Malaysia's thousands of students abroad would be 'fed with all kinds of propaganda against the Central Government.' He said he had decided on severing relations with the 'State Government that has ceased to give even measure of loyalty to Malaysia.' Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman, acting on the permission of the King, signed the amendment into law, making the separation of Singapore legal and complete. Singapore and Malaysian leaders agreed on the surprise moves on Saturday, after a series of secret meetings. Under the pact, Malaysia and Singapore agreed to co-operate in External. Defence, Trade and Commerce. Although Singapore was free, it agreed not to under-take foreign treaties to the detriment of Malaysia. Tunku Abdul Rahman made clear at a news conference Malaysia reserved the right to take action if Singapore engaged in activities which threatened Malaysia. This included establishing relations with Communist China and Indonesia. The Tunku said he had decided to seek Singapore's withdrawal because he feared the continuing differences might lead to Malay-Chinese racial trouble. He said he hoped for the 'closest co-operation' bet-ween an independent Singapore and Malaysia. He said Malaysia would sponsor Singapore's admittance to the United Nations and the Commonwealth. The Prime Minister was anxious after the press con-ference this evening to know about the people's reaction to the separation. He asked newsmen how the people had received the news and whether there had been any violent demonstrations. On being told there has been no incidents he said, 'Well I am happy to hear had to do this.' Alliance and some opposition members of the Parliament said in the lobby this had to be done. However, members of the Sarawak and Sabah Alliance Party on being approached for comment on the matter said, 'no comment. We will make a statement later perhaps.' However they voted for the motion. The Tunku's relaxed mood and ready smile at the news conference was in sharp contrast to that of Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. At a Singapore news conference, Lee broke down and wept while speaking of the breakup. Lee said he met the Tunku last Saturday and was unconvinced Singapore's withdrawal from Malaysia was necessary. 'I believed there were still other ways to reduce communal tensions in Malaysia. After what he told me I realized there was no other way. We had to leave Malaysia.' 'I knew from what he said that we would all be in. for communal trouble if we insisted on remaining in Malaysia.' Describing it as a 'moment of anguish,' the 42-year-old Prime Minister told, newsmen: 'The whole of my adult life I have believed in merger and unity of these two countries.' Under the new arrangement Malaysia would continue as a Federation of 13 states including the Borneo Territories of Sabah and Sarawak. Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak—all British dependencies—merged with the Federation of Malaya on Sept. 16, 1963 to form Malaysia. Singapore as an independent island state 26 miles long and14 miles wide has a population of 1.7 million. Malaysia's population was reduced to about 8.5 million. Addressing parliament earlier today, the Tunku said the situation had reached a point where it was no longer worth having Singapore in the Federation. At his news conference, he said when Malaysia was formed he had hoped to prevent Singapore from becoming a 'second Cuba,' a communist island Just south of the Malay Peninsula. But, he said, the Singapore leaders were too involved in. politics to co-operate and work for a successful Malaysia. The Tunku said the foreign nations closest to Malaysia—Britain, Australia and New Zealand—had shown 'great disappointment' in the move. 'But,' he said, 'we have got to think what's best for the country and not what's best for our friends.' The Tunku said he had considered the problems of Malaysia while recovering from an attack of shingles or herpes in London last month. He said during this time Deputy Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak and Lee met in Kuala Lumpur but were unable to agree on any points. The Tunku returned to Malaysia after a 54-day absence on Thursday. He said he got a thorough briefing of the situation at that time. The matter was discussed at an emergency cabinet meeting on Friday. On Saturday, the Tunku reached his decision that Singapore must go and conveyed his thoughts to Lee. After some reluctance, the Singapore leader and his nine cabinet ministers all signed the agreement. Five Federal cabinet ministers signed for Malaysia. The decision was kept secret until today when it was to be released at 10 a.m. local time (0230 GMT). The Tunku said, however, Lee broke the news of Singapore's independence three hours earlier. Singapore's new status took most of Malaysia's 10.2 million people by complete surprise. Reaction was slow because of the shock effect. Singapore was reported quiet with troops patrolling predominant Malay areas where race riots broke out last year. The Tunku called on the people to remain calm. He said those persons who wanted to come to Malaysia would be provided land in Johore State, just to the north of Singapore. The Minister of Sarawak Affairs, Dato Temmenggong Jugah told Parliament Sarawak would never withdraw from Malaysia. There was no immediate reaction from Sabah. Although the Singapore and Central Governments had many differences, neither had directly called for a break-up of Malaysia.
