A tiny new snail species discovered in Thailand has been named after legendary artist Pablo Picasso, due to the strange, complex geometric patterns seen on its shell.
The species, measuring only 3 millimetres (0.1 in) in size, has been named Anauchen picasso owing to the rectangularly angled whorls on its shell.
These whorl patterns 'look like a cubist interpretation of other snails with 'normal' shell shapes,' prompting researchers to name it after Picasso.
'This species looks like an Anauchen with rounded whorls painted in a Pablo Picasso -style resembling the art style known as Cubism,' scientists wrote in the study, published in the journal ZooKeys.
Its brown, conical shell consists of 4.5–5 whorls separated by a deep suture, scientists say.
There are several irregularly spaced whitish streaks crossing the shell's spiral.
The research describes 46 new species of microsnails from Cambodia Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam.
These are tiny land snails with shell sizes less than 5 mm, found mostly in Southeast Asia, including former Indochina, Indonesia, and the Philippines, as well as parts of China.
Their distribution extends further westwards, across India to Pakistan, with significantly reduced diversity.
Researchers also propose a new method to classify snails by sorting them into similar groups based on overall shell shape, shell surface texture, and the arrangement of apertural barriers.
Many of the new species were collected only recently, while several others were discovered in the collection of the Florida Museum of Natural History, having been collected in the 1980s.
'Although the shell sizes of these snails are less than 5 mm, they are real beauties! Their shells exhibit extraordinary complexity,' scientists say.
'For example, the aperture ('opening' of the shell) is armed with numerous tooth-like barriers, which are most probably useful against predators,' they explained.
Several of the new species were found to have an aperture that turns either upwards or downwards, meaning some species carry their shells upside-down.
Researchers were able to distinguish the different snails based on the apertural barriers and the orientation of the last whorl on the shell.
Scientists caution that the locations where some of the snails were found in the 1980s may have already been destroyed by deforestation and limestone quarrying.
The study highlights these major threats that locally endemic land snails face in Southeast Asia.

Yawning is known to be associated with attention changes, regulating body temperature, and as a transition between rest and arousal. Contagious yawning is a strange behaviour in which an animal yawns after seeing another individual exhibit the same behaviour. This contagious aspect of the behaviour has been linked to some elements of social interaction, like empathy and imitation. Until now, contagious yawning has been observed in mammals and some fish, but its evolutionary origins are still unknown. It emerges gradually in humans, chimpanzees, and dogs, becoming prominent at around four years in humans, five years in chimpanzees, and at about seven months in dogs, scientists say. The new study, published on Thursday in the journal Nature, found that chimpanzees will both yawn and lie down in response to yawns made by an android robot. The findings suggest that observing another individual yawn may act as a cue in chimps to rest rather than triggering an automatic response. In the study, scientists used an android head that could simulate facial expressions to test the responses of 14 adult chimps aged between 10 and 33 years. The android head contained 33 rotational motors which functioned as muscles to generate its facial expressions, including yawns, with each expression lasting 10 seconds. Chimps in the study were each exposed to four 15-minute sessions of the android demonstrating yawning, gaping, and neutral facial expressions. Scientists recorded these sessions on camera, and each chimpanzee was scored for their responsiveness, along with the amount of time they spent lying down. Eight of the 14 chimpanzees were found to yawn in response to the android's 'yawn' expression. 'The results showed that adult chimpanzees exhibited across-agent yawn contagion, with a graded response: the highest contagion occurred when the android displayed a fully wide-open mouth, a reduced response when the mouth was partially opened, and no contagion when the android's mouth was closed,' they wrote. Eight chimps also lay down in response, and some gathered bedding before lying down. 'Chimpanzees engaged in behaviours associated with drowsiness, such as gathering bedding materials, constructing nests, and lying down, while observing the android yawning,' scientists wrote. These findings seem to show contagious yawning due to an inanimate model for the first time, according to researchers. The results shed further light on primates' susceptibility to contagiously induced behaviours, scientists say, adding, however, that the exact biological mechanisms surrounding it remain unclear. They hope future research can reveal whether other actions performed by robots are contagious to animals.

If you have a complaint over your timetables or exams, Loughborough University may not be the place to air it. For physicists at the university believe they have created the world's smallest violin using nanotechnology. They say work on the tiny instrument, which is smaller than the width of a human hair, will help with research into an array of applications from improving the efficiency of computers to finding new ways of harvesting energy. Prof Kelly Morrison, head of the university's physics department, said: "A lot of what we've learned in the process has actually laid the groundwork for the research we're now undertaking." The violin measures 35 microns long and 13 microns wide, with a micron being one millionth of a metre. A human hair typically ranges from 17 to 180 microns in diameter, for comparison. It was created to test the capabilities of the university's new nanolithography system, which allows researchers to build and study tiny structures. "Our nanolithography system allows us to design experiments that probe materials in different ways – using light, magnetism, or electricity – and observe their responses," Prof Morrison said. "Once we understand how materials behave, we can start applying that knowledge to develop new technologies, whether it's improving computing efficiency or finding new ways to harvest energy. "But first, we need to understand the fundamental science and this system enables us to do just that." The phrase "can you hear the world's smallest violin playing just for you?" is thought to have first appeared on an episode of TV show M*A*S*H in 1978, and usually mocks overly dramatic complaints. The violin is a microscopic image rather than a playable instrument and has not been officially confirmed as the world's smallest violin, the university said. To create it, Prof Morrison was joined by Dr Naëmi Leo and research technician Dr Arthur Coveney. A small chip was coated with two layers of gel-like material called a resist, before it was placed under the NanoFrazor, a nano-sculpting machine. The machine uses thermal scanning probe lithography, a technique where a heated, needle-like tip "writes" highly precise patterns at the nanoscale. This allowed the violin design to be etched on to the chip's surface layer. After it was etched, the underlayer of the resist was dissolved to leave behind a violin-shaped hole. The university said a thin layer of platinum was then deposited into the chip before a final rinse in acetone removed any remaining material to leave the finished violin. It takes around three hours to create a violin using the nanolithography system, but the research team's final version took several months as they refined and tested different techniques.
