3-time America's Cup champion Peter Burling joins Luna Rossa ahead of 2027 regatta off Naples
MILAN (AP) — Three-time America's Cup champion Peter Burling has joined Luna Rossa ahead of the 2027 regatta off Naples, the Italian team announced Friday.
Burling left Team New Zealand in April after nearly a decade in which he steered his home boats to three consecutive America's Cup trophies.
Luna Rossa said Burling 'is ready to contribute both in sailing performance and technical development as the team gears up for the next America's Cup campaign.'
Barring a change in protocol concerning team changes, Burling likely won't be able to be aboard Luna Rossa and will have to remain on shore.
Luna Rossa CEO Max Sirena praised Burling's 'exceptional sailing talent and his sportsmanship.'
'Even though his exact role has yet to be defined, he will certainly be part of the sailing team, reinforcing Luna Rossa's core leadership group and contributing to key areas of our development program,' Sirena said.
Burling is a former Olympic sailing gold medalist and nine-time world champion. He became Team New Zealand helmsman in 2017 and at 26 steered the boat to a 7-1 victory over Oracle Team USA in Bermuda. That made him the youngest helmsman to win the America's Cup.
Burling was skipper and helmsman when Team New Zealand successfully defended the America's Cup in 2021 in Auckland, New Zealand, and 2024 in Barcelona.
'I've always loved racing against Luna Rossa and now to join this iconic team is a real honor,' Burling said. 'The innovation and competitiveness they bring to the Cup has always inspired me. I'm grateful for the warm welcome and I'm looking forward to working hard alongside a world-class team, doing my part to help win Luna Rossa's first America's Cup.'

Historic HBCU Expands Academic Playbook
Stillman College has long punched above its weight in the world of sports. From Olympic gold medalists to Super Bowl champs, the small HBCU in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, has churned out elite talent on the field and on the sidelines. Now, the Tigers are looking to own the front office, too. Starting in Fall 2025, Stillman College will offer a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management. This new degree program will provide students with a new pathway into coaching, athletic administration, and the multibillion-dollar sports industry. It's the 19th major offered by the institution and one that reflects the growing demand for career-ready HBCU graduates in sports-related fields. "Tuscaloosa is one of the most successful sports cities in Alabama," said Tim Williams, Chair of Stillman's Department of Kinesiology. "Adding a BS in Sport Management is a logical step based on the interests of our students, faculty, and colleagues in athletics." The new major will live at the intersection of academics and athletics. Offered through a collaboration between the School of Education's Department of Kinesiology and the School of Business, the program includes coursework in sport facility management, compliance, policy analysis, and even a deep dive into personal branding and NIL (Name, Image, Likeness)-a nod to the modern realities of college athletics. Stillman is also looking to leverage its local Alabama connections. They plan to offer internships and hands-on experiences through its athletic department and events, such as the 2026 HBCU Athletic Conference Basketball Championships, which Stillman will co-host with Visit Tuscaloosa. Dr. Carol Williams, Dean of the School of Business, said the program is about more than just sports. It's about building opportunities and growing enrollment. "It's been a truly rewarding experience to bring this program to life," she said. "Most inspiring is the promise it holds for expanding academic offerings and driving growth at Stillman College." Stillman joins a growing list of HBCUs stepping into the sports business space. Programs at institutions like Howard University, North Carolina A&T, Winston-Salem State, and Florida A&M are already prepping students for careers in sports law, marketing, analytics, and agency work. Lobster, champagne and stripper poles: Panthers party like rock stars in Miami
Can't stop, won't stop. The Florida Panthers kept the party going to the extremes Thursday night two days after winning their second consecutive championship at home against the Edmonton Oilers. The guys had already celebrated so hard the day before in Fort Lauderdale Beach that they banged up the actual Stanley Cup. Insiders told us that the guys painted the town red starting at Maple & Ash at downtown's Miami World Center. The boisterous crew toasted to their back to back titles, along with the guest of honor, the (repaired) trophy, as well as a famous fellow diner, tennis great Martina Navratilova. The entire team indulged in an 'extravagant' dinner party for 40 at the upscale steakhouse, taking over the VIP area, and tucking into Chef Danny Grant's so called IDGAF Chef's Menu…Champions edition. The protein- and calorie-packed recovery meal included dry-aged meatballs, bone-in ribeye and lobster spaghetti followed by chocolate cake, coconut cream pie, and raspberry macarons. Drink of choice: 'Expensive' California cabs, and naturally, champagne, guzzled out of the Stanley Cup. After chowing down and toasting their win, the Cats moved the festivities to E11EVEN, the 24/7 ultraclub where dozens of cheering hockey fans were already waiting by the red carpet. Once inside, things got a little crazy, Miami style (just like last year). Rapper Rick Ross sent over a 15-liter bottle of his Belaire bubbly, which immediately got sprayed in every direction. While winger Brad Marchand crowd surfed, the rest of the gang piled on the main stage dancing to Chappell Roan's hit 'Pink Pony Club.' If you know, you know: the Edmonton Oilers adopted it as a victory song during the playoffs. Burn. The ecstatic teammates then all began dancing and screaming, 'We got the Cup!' while the packed club chanted along. As iconic Queen anthem 'We Are the Champions' came over the speakers, confetti rained down and smoke came out of nowhere. That's when the crowd went absolutely wild, we were told of the blowout that lasted well past 3 a.m. Among the many highlights of the evening/early morning was center Sam Bennett dropping the bombshell that he intends to stay a Cat, by uttering the famous line from 'The Wolf of Wall Street' — 'I ain't f---ing leaving!' Another viral moment was born when fellow center Sam Reinhart climbed a stripper pole to grab a signed Aleksander Barkov jersey from the a trapeze bar hanging from the rafters, while people yelled his nickname, 'Reino! Reino!' The wild scene was captured on Barstool Sports' Instagram page with the caption, 'THE FLORIDA PANTHERS MAY NEVER SLEEP AGAIN.' We feel like at least a few probably did eventually get some well earned shut-eye after that booze-soaked, exhilarating rager. 'Wherever you looked they were, truly enjoying partying with their fans,' dished a fellow patron. 'And those fans who waited all night to get in were drinking from the same champagne bottle as the champs.' Speaking of enjoying time with fans: Upstairs in the balcony, Brad Marchand, double fisting beers, managed to sign fans' plastic rat souvenirs. One woman asked him to autograph her forehead, which he contemplated briefly, but said no. After that acrobatic stunt on the pole, Reinhart was later seen with forward Evan Rodrigues pouring shots down fans' throats and handing out full bottles to revelers. Though Reinhart was up playing bartender until the wee hours, the NHL superstar was able to eventually clock in at Raising Canes in Tamarac on Friday for a 'celebratory shift.' Yankees activate Luke Weaver after the right-hander missed two weeks with a strained left hamstring
Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees activated right-handed reliever Luke Weaver from the injured list Friday after he missed two weeks with a strained left hamstring. Weaver was injured warming up before a June 1 game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. After being placed on the injured list, the Yankees thought Weaver might be out until early July or through the All-Star break. Instead, Weaver began feeling better quickly and said the pain disappeared shortly after the injury. He took his final steps in his rehab by throwing a simulated game on Tuesday after throwing side sessions. Weaver has a 1.05 ERA with eight saves in nine opportunities in 24 appearances. He ascended into the closer's role by converting six saves in seven chances after Devin Williams posted an 11.25 ERA in his first 10 appearances and was removed from that spot on April 27. A 31-year-old right-hander who can become a free agent this autumn, Weaver supplanted Clay Holmes as closer last September. From May 20-22, Weaver became the first Yankees pitcher to appear on three consecutive regular-season days since Aroldis Chapman in September 2021, though Weaver's first outing in that stretch lasted just two pitches, and the three totaled 18. Williams converted all four save chances while Weaver was injured and has a 1.76 ERA in his last 16 appearances since May 5. The Yankees cleared room for Weaver by optioning Jayvien Sandridge to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes/Barre.
