Whats On this Week: Life-changing opportunities await ‘journeyman' players at the DP World Tour in Kenya
The DP World Tour resumes this week after a short break with the $2.5 million Magical Kenyan Open, held at Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi, Kenya.
This is the ninth tournament of the 42-event Race to Dubai season, and with just three counting tournaments remaining in the International Series mini-Order of Merit, there's plenty to look forward to – including two upcoming events in South Africa that will complete the Series.
Haotong Li (China), the recent winner of the Commercial Masters Qatar Masters at Doha Golf Club, is one of the players in top form.
Alongside him is 24-year-old Wilco Nienaber (RSA), who won last week's NTT Data Pro-Am on the newly rebranded HotelPlanner Tour (formerly the Challenge Tour) – a change that may still be a bit tricky for many to wrap their heads around.
Nienaber shot impressive rounds of 60, 66, 66, and 70, finishing with a 27-under-par score of 262 to win by seven shots.
Regarded as one of the most talented golfers worldwide, Nienaber is certainly a player to watch this week, throughout the year, and beyond.
Dubai-based Guido Migliozzi (ITA) and Spain's Adrian Otaegui, playing under the UAE flag, are also among the standouts, as well as Eugenio Chacarra (Spain), formerly with LIV Golf, who has received an invitation to play.
Another exciting newcomer to keep an eye on is Wenyl Ding (China), who turned pro after the 2024 Asian Amateur Championship in Japan. Ding has made a strong start to his professional career and could make waves at this event.
With 19 Kenyan players in the field, including 13 who've earned National Spots through Category 8 of the DP World Tour's Conditions of Entry, this tournament is particularly special for the host country.
This week offers 'journeyman' players a chance to shine and potentially secure their first victory. For many, this tournament could be the springboard to a life-changing opportunity. As the DP World Tour's mantra reminds us, 'It's all about playing opportunities.'
All five recent winners of this event are also in the field, marking its return to the DP World Tour schedule:
2019: Guido Migliozzi (ITA)
2021: Justin Harding (RSA)
2022: Ashun Wu (CHN)
2023: Jorge Campillo (SPA)
2024: Darius Van Driel (NLD)

Spaun caps rainy US Open with monster putt for first major title
JJ Spaun drained a 64-foot birdie putt that snaked across a sodden 18th green to win the US Open by two shots from Robert MacIntyre on Sunday as the Californian claimed his first major after a chaotic final round at Oakmont Country Club. Spaun needed only a par at the closing hole to avoid a Monday playoff but went one better, sinking the huge putt in the rain to win the year's third major and erase the disappointment from his close call at The Players Championship in March. "Just to finish it off like that is just a dream," said Spaun, who closed with a two-over-par 72 that left him at one under for the week. "To have my own moment like that at this championship, I'll never forget this moment for the rest of my life." When the clinching putt dropped, Spaun tossed his putter, delivered a fist pump, hugged his caddie and then walked off the green with his two young daughters in tow on Father's Day to celebrate a career-defining win. "It was so cool to just have my whole family there on Father's Day," said Spaun. "It's just incredible. I have no words to describe the moment and them being able to see me as the winner." Spaun reached the driveable par-four 17th hole level with Scotland's MacIntyre, who was already in the clubhouse after a two-under 68, and delivered the shot of his life - a 309-yard strike that settled 17 feet from the cup. The 34-year-old American sent his eagle putt past the hole but made the comebacker and then went on to secure the win in style at the 18th, where he said he did not look at the scoreboard so as not to alter his plan. "I knew based off of, like, what the crowd was saying that I felt like if I two-putted I would probably win, but I didn't want to look," said Spaun. "I didn't want to do anything dumb trying to protect a three-putt or something." 'Best I had' The triumph comes three months after Spaun lost in a playoff to world number two Rory McIlroy at The Players Championship, a defeat which was hard to take but left him knowing he could mix it with the game's elite. Spaun had led the way after the first round of the US Open where he managed the only bogey-free round of the day despite playing an Oakmont layout that is considered one of the toughest courses in the world. In the final round he looked well out of contention after a carding five early bogeys but he never went away and as the leaders all failed to pull away he found himself back in the thick of things late on the back nine. Viktor Hovland (73) finished three shots back in third place, while Cameron Young (70) and LIV Golf players Tyrrell Hatton (72) and Carlos Ortiz (73) finished a further shot back in a share of fourth place. Sam Burns (78), who took a one-shot lead over Spaun and Adam Scott into the final round, struggled late in his round and finished five shots back. "I went out there and gave it the best I had," said Burns. "Golf's a hard game, especially on this golf course. At the end of the day, I can hold my head high." Heavy Rains Australian Scott, playing in his 96th consecutive major, dropped five shots over his closing five holes and finished in a share of 12th place after a closing 79. The final round was interrupted by a 96-minute weather delay after heavy rains forced puddles of water to form on the greens and fairways and forced the grounds crew at Oakmont to use squeegees to get the course ready. Twice major champion Jon Rahm, who began the day 11 shots back, closed with a three-under 67 that was the day's joint low round, the Spaniard finishing five shots back in a share of seventh with world number one Scottie Scheffler (70) and Burns. World number two Rory McIlroy also saved his best for last and carded a 67 to reach seven over. McIlroy, who had been struggling to find form since completing the career Grand Slam at the Masters, is looking forward to some downtime before the British Open being held next month at Royal Portrush in his home country of Northern Ireland. "I just need to get myself in the right frame of mind. I probably haven't been there the last few weeks," said McIlroy.

Burns leads US Open, Scott and Spaun sit one shot back
Sam Burns moved closer to a major breakthrough as he held a one-shot lead over Australian Adam Scott, who turned back the clock to enter the mix, and JJ Spaun after the third round of the US Open on Saturday at Oakmont Country Club. Burns and Spaun took turns trading or sharing the lead for much of the day but it was the former who finished in front with a one-under-par 69 that brought him to four under on the week at the major that is considered golf's toughest test. A five-time winner on the PGA Tour who lost in a playoff last week in Canada, Burns was inconsistent off the tee but managed to lean on other aspects of his game to move into the driver's seat at Oakmont. "When I got out of position I feel like I did a good job of getting myself back in the fairway, having a wedge or short iron in my hand and giving myself a chance for par," said Burns. "I was able to convert some of those and kind of kept the momentum going. So that was kind of key to the round today." Burns dropped into a three-way share of the lead with Spaun and Scott after missing a six-foot par putt at 16 but never wavered and delivered a bounce-back birdie at 17 after stuffing his approach seven inches from the hole for a tap-in birdie. Not to be outdone, playing partner Spaun birdied the same hole from 13 feet to end his string of 12 consecutive pars and grab a share of the lead before an errant tee shot at the last led to a closing bogey for a 69. "I'm just happy I'm still within shouting distance going into tomorrow," said Spaun. 'EXCLAMATION POINT' Scott, the 2013 Masters champion who is playing his 96th consecutive major, missed several birdie putts but converted three on the back nine for 67, equalling the low round of the day and will play in Sunday's final pairing with Burns. For Scott, whose lone major came at the 2013 Masters, a win on Sunday would set the record for longest time between a player winning his first and second majors, something that is not lost on the 44-year-old Australian. "Everyone out here has got their journey, you know. Putting ourselves in these positions doesn't just happen by fluke. It's not easy to do it," said Scott. "If I were to come away with it tomorrow, it would be a hell of a round of golf and an exclamation point on my career." World number 14 Viktor Hovland (70) was alone in fourth place and three shots off the pace. LIV Golf's Carlos Ortiz was enjoying a rather stress-free trip around the notoriously treacherous Oakmont layout until a closing bogey, but still signed for a 67 that left him at even par on the week and alone in fifth place. Fellow LIV player Tyrell Hatton (68) was a further shot back in sixth place with South African Thriston Lawrence (70). Pre-tournament favourite Scottie Scheffler was unable to make a big move as he mixed four bogeys with four birdies for an even-par 70 that left him at four over. "I felt like I had a hard time getting momentum," said Scheffler. "I made a few silly mistakes out there, a couple three-putts, which is just a killer." Rory McIlroy, trying to shake off a Masters hangover since completing the career Grand Slam at Augusta in April, started the day nine shots off the lead and carded a four-over-par 74 that left him at 10 over. "The name of the game this week is staying patient and try to do a good job of it out there, but it's one of those golf courses that you can lose patience on pretty quickly," McIlroy said. "I was hoping to play better but I didn't."
