Musa Aman orders thorough, transparent probe into Zara Qairina's death

KOTA KINABALU - Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sabah Tun Musa Aman has directed the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the death of 13-year-old student Zara Qairina Mahathir.
Istana Seri Kinabalu on Monday stressed that the investigation must be conducted with impartiality, free from fear or favour and be grounded in truth and justice.
"The post-mortem was conducted yesterday (Sunday) and the investigation is ongoing as authorities await the results.
"Every aspect of the case must be thoroughly examined. Seeking justice is not an act of revenge; rather, it is a command from Allah SWT to protect the vulnerable and to hold the guilty accountable,' the palace said in a statement.
Istana Seri Kinabalu also urged all parties to allow the legal process to proceed fairly, and to support Zara Qairina's family in their pursuit of answers and justice. The family lawyer confirmed the presence of injuries on Zara Qairina's body and stressed that the post-mortem process was conducted transparently without external interference.
Therefore, the palace urged the public, especially social media users, to refrain from speculation, spreading baseless allegations, or promoting conspiracy theories related to the case.
The statement emphasised that such actions could undermine the integrity of the investigation, and deepen the pain of Zara's grieving family.
"Tun Musa and Toh Puan Faridah Tussin, along with the entire nation, extend their deepest condolences and sympathy to Zara's family, praying that they are granted strength and patience in facing this trial,' the statement said.
Meanwhile, a state-level tahlil recitation for Zara Qairina will be held this Thursday (Aug 14), after Maghrib prayer, at the Bandaraya Mosque, here.
A similar event will also be conducted simultaneously at all mosques and surau throughout the state, on that day.
The statement added that Tun Musa encourages Muslims to attend the event, while non-Muslims are invited to offer prayers for Zara Qairina according to their own beliefs.
He also emphasised that the safety and welfare of children must always be a priority for everyone.
"Tun Musa prays that Allah SWT will grant her a place among the righteous and asks for strength for us to protect our children and prevent such tragedies from recurring,' the statement said.
Last Friday, the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) said that the body of Zara Qairina needed to be exhumed, to allow a post-mortem examination to be conducted.
The AGC added that further police investigations were necessary, to ensure a thorough examination of all aspects of the case.
Following this, on Saturday, the teenager's body was exhumed from the Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery in Kampung Mesapol, Sipitang, and taken to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital for the post-mortem. Her remains were reburied at the same cemetery early this morning.
Zara Qairina was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on July 17.
The student had been taken to the hospital after being found severely injured and unconscious in a drain near her school dormitory, in Papar, at 4am on July 16. - BERNAMA

NST Leader: No end to bullying
BULLYING is, sadly, a universal phenomenon as old as the dawn of history. It's why Neanderthals vanished 40,000 to 45,000 years ago, harried out of existence by the more aggressive Homo sapiens. From there on, from tribal clashes of nomads to hunter gatherers to the great civilisations of antiquity, all were founded on invasions and wars — prime bullying methods. Brutalising others without consequences is why international conflicts, like what is unfolding in Palestine and Ukraine, continue without end. In the modern day, bullying has entered the online and psychological realms through cyberbullying. It has evolved from the physical menace in schools, dormitories, even the office. Victims can be driven to retaliate with lethal weapons. In America, they fire assault rifles at their tormentors. Bullying in Malaysia remains serious among schoolchildren and university students. A study by a non-governmental organisation found that 38 per cent of respondents report having been in a bullying situation during their school years as victims, bullies or both, of physical, verbal and cyber types. The bullied comprise 21.4 per cent while 9.4 per cent were actual bullies while 7.2 per cent were both victims and perpetrators. Victims suffer from depression and are vulnerable to self-harm. The death of Zara Qairina Mahathir, a Form One student from Papar, Sabah, is yet another tragic statistic. Found unconscious outside her dormitory building, Zara Qairina is suspected to have fallen from the third floor. She was pronounced dead at the hospital and buried a day later. The ensuing national furore led to her exhumation and a forensic probe. Police have found signs of physical bullying. But this time, police are empowered under the Penal Code to arrest Zara Qairina's tormentors and haul them to justice. What went wrong here? How do we prevent such incidents? Reinforcing awareness, preventive programmes and school mental health support are ongoing initiatives. In government hospitals, signs are everywhere warning the public to not harangue medical staff.

Kedayan community in Miri holds prayers for late Zara Qairina
Members of Kedayan community in Miri gather for a prayer ceremony in memory of the late Zara Qairina. MIRI (Aug 15): Persatuan Kedayan Miri held a solemn tahlil and prayer ceremony at Masjid At-Taqwa here on Thursday, in memory of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir, a Form One student whose tragic passing has touched communities across Sabah, Sarawak, and beyond. Association chairman Mohamad Abdullah Jamin said the gathering was not only to remember the young Zara but also to reflect unity among the Kedayan community in Miri and express solidarity with their counterparts in Sabah, Labuan, and Brunei. 'Zara Qairina was of Kedayan and Malay Brunei heritage, which makes her loss deeply felt among Kedayans here. 'We have also been invited by Kedayan communities in Sabah, Labuan, and Brunei to join similar tahlil and prayers,' he said. He expressed sorrow over the incident and praised the solidarity prayers and peaceful gatherings held in Sabah and Labuan, adding that the association supports such initiatives. Mohamad Abdullah also called on the authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the case. 'We believe the police can carry out their investigations fairly and without prejudice in order to resolve this high-profile case,' he said, noting that Kedayans and other communities across Sarawak are rallying in support of Zara's mother during this difficult time. The Miri prayer was held in tandem with similar gatherings at mosques and suraus in Sabah. On July 16, between 3am and 4am, Zara was found unconscious in a drain below the girls' dormitory of SMK Agama Tun Datu Mustapha in Papar, Sabah.
