Arab News24-02-2025
KARACHI: The Pakistan Navy on Monday launched the Sea Guard-25 exercise in the southern port city of Karachi to bring diverse sectors and agencies together on one platform to 'collectively address multifaceted challenges in the maritime domain.'
The exercise, the second in its series, will run from Feb. 24-28 and bring together representatives from fisheries, law enforcement agencies, private entities, and non-profits.
'In addition to prominent figures from the private sector and fishing community, representatives from various organizations, including the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency, Pakistan Coast Guards, Pakistan National Shipping Corporation, Anti-Narcotics Force, Federal Investigation Agency, Karachi Port Trust, and Port Qasim Authority, attended the session,' the navy said in a statement.
'The exercise seeks to enhance coordination among national stakeholders while operating within their respective legal frameworks, using JMICC as a common platform to strengthen security of Pakistan's maritime zones,' the navy statement added, referring to the Joint Maritime Information Coordination Center.
'It includes a series of practical scenario-based exercises at sea, along with table-top discussions, to refine and improve existing security mechanisms.'
Pakistan frequently conducts drills in Karachi, home to key naval bases and whose strategic position along the Arabian Sea is vital for safeguarding the South Asian nation's territorial waters.
Earlier this month, Pakistan hosted the AMAN-25 multinational naval exercise, with 60 nations participating. Pakistan and Saudi Arabia also concluded their annual Affaa Al Sahil naval exercise in Karachi in February.

Pakistan demands collective response to climate change as monsoon rains kill 657 since June

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday demanded a collective response from the nation to climate change impacts, state-run media reported, as Pakistan reels from devastating floods that have killed at least 657 since the onset of the monsoon rains in late June. Deadly floods in the country's northern region, especially its northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, have killed at least 323 people and injured 156 since Aug. 15, as per the provincial disaster management authority (PDMA). Raging hill torrents flattened several homes and swept away dozens of people in KP's Swat, Buner, Bajaur, Torghar, Mansehra, Shangla and Battagram districts last week. Officials said several bodies were found on Sunday in the worst-hit Buner district. Pakistan's government launched a Monsoon Tree Plantation Drive on Monday, with state broadcaster Radio Pakistan saying more than 41 million saplings will be planted across the country during the campaign. 'President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif have called for collective response to climate change through advancement of Green Pakistan Programme,' state broadcaster Radio Pakistan reported. In his message, Zardari said the Green Pakistan Programme is a national initiative to expand forest cover, rehabilitate degraded lands, restore the balance of nature and promote nature-based solutions. 'The President said the well-being and progress of any nation are grounded in the preservation of its forests and natural environment,' the statement added. In his message, the prime minister called on federal and provincial governments, social and religious leaders, and citizens of all ages to renew their commitment to planting more trees. 'Tree plantation campaigns are not merely symbolic actions; they are a national duty aimed at protecting a healthy, natural environment for future generations and at preventing the destruction caused by climate change,' he added. The prime minister said increasing Pakistan's tree plantation rate is 'critically important' to counter the harmful effects of climate change, noting that the South Asian country ranks among nations most severely affected by climate change. 'The recent abnormal monsoon rains and the resulting floods and loss of lives and property once again underscore the fact that proactive measures against climate change are essential for Pakistan,' he added. KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur on Sunday visited Buner, where he promised survivors compensation for their financial losses, urging residents of disaster-prone areas to relocate from there. 'The data of all the losses is being compiled,' CM Gandapur told reporters in Buner. 'It is beyond our power to compensate the loss of lives, but we will compensate financial losses, damages to private property.' Several people were still missing on Sunday and search efforts were focused on areas where homes were flattened by water torrents that swept down from the mountains, carrying massive boulders that smashed into houses like explosions. The NDMA has forecast more 'heavy to very heavy rainfall' in parts of the country over the next 24 hours, particularly in Islamabad, KP, Punjab and Azad Kashmir, under the current weather system. The monsoon season brings South Asia about three-quarters of its annual rainfall, vital for agriculture and food security, but also brings destruction. 'The intensity of this year's monsoon is around 50 to 60 percent more than last year,' NDMA chief Lt. Gen. Inam Haider told journalists in Islamabad on Sunday. 'Two to three more monsoon spells are expected until the first weeks of September.' Pakistan is one of the world's most vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change and is contending with extreme weather events with increasing frequency. Monsoon floods in 2022 submerged a third of the country and killed around 1,700 people.

Pakistan launches third Chinese-built Hangor-class submarine amid deepening defense ties

KARACHI: Pakistan on Friday launched its third Hangor-class submarine in China, the navy said in a statement, in the latest sign of the country's growing military ties with Beijing. The launch comes months after Pakistan's brief but intense military standoff with India, which saw the two nuclear-armed neighbors exchange air, missile, drone and artillery attacks. In recent years, Islamabad has strengthened its defence collaboration with China, inducting state-of-the-art Chinese hardware across all three services, including Z-10ME attack helicopters earlier this month and JF-17 fighter jets jointly developed with Beijing. The navy said the new vessel, equipped with modern sensors and weapons, will enhance its capabilities to safeguard national interests and contribute to a 'secure and cooperative maritime environment.' 'Their cutting-edge weaponry and advanced sensors would be instrumental in sustaining regional power equilibrium and ensuring maritime stability,' Vice Admiral Abdul Samad, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff Project-2, said at the launch ceremony in Wuhan, according to a navy statement. The launch took place at Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group's Shuangliu Base and was attended by senior officials from both Pakistan and China, including representatives of China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Company Ltd (CSOC). Samad commended the steady progress of the project, praised the work of Chinese shipbuilders and said the Hangor-class program would 'bring a fresh dimension' to Pakistan-China naval cooperation. The submarines are a new generation of diesel-electric attack vessels and equipped with advanced sensors and modern weapon systems to strengthen the country's underwater warfare capabilities. Pakistan signed a contract with CSOC to acquire eight Hangor-class submarines. Four are being built in China, while the remaining four will be produced in Pakistan at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works Limited under a transfer-of-technology program. The first two submarines in the series were launched in 2024, with deliveries expected over the next several years.

Pakistan, Turkish navies conclude first bilateral amphibious exercise in Karachi

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Türkiye's navies concluded their first-ever bilateral amphibious exercise in the port city of Karachi, aimed at enhancing 'maritime collaboration and interoperability,' state media reported on Wednesday. A naval amphibious exercise is a military drill that simulates the landing of troops from ships onto a coastline, designed to strengthen coordination and combat readiness for assaults, evacuations or disaster response operations. The exercise featured combat firing techniques, amphibious operation drills, convoy escorting drills along with military operations in urban terrain. 'Live firing drills and close combat scenarios designed to sharpen tactical coordination and readiness in littoral environments were also a part of the exercise,' the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) said in its report. 'The exercise culminated with a comprehensive amphibious drill in the designated coastal area validating operational readiness of both navies.' It added the bilateral exercise reflected the 'deep-rooted' defense partnership between Pakistan and Türkiye, reaffirming their shared commitment to regional peace through regular joint training. Pakistan Navy Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf also visited to Türkiye recently, where he was conferred the prestigious Turkish military honor, the 'Legion of Merit,' in recognition of his efforts to enhance maritime cooperation between the two countries. Pakistan and Türkiye maintain strong diplomatic, economic and defense relations. Turkish defense firms have played a significant role in modernizing Pakistan's Agosta 90B-class submarines and have also supplied Islamabad with advanced military equipment including drones The two nations regularly hold joint military drills to boost cooperation and synergy. The last exercise, Ataturk-XIII in February, brought together special forces for combat training to enhance interoperability.
