Pune bridge collapse: Rahul Gandhi expresses condolences, urges swift relief op
Pune (Maharashtra) [India], June 15 (ANI): Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Sunday expressed grief over the tragic collapse of a bridge on the Indrayani River in Maharashtra's Pune, which led to the death of four people and several others injured.
In a post on X, the Congress leader extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the safety of those still missing.
'The news of the drowning of many people due to the collapse of the bridge on the Indrayani River in Pune is extremely sad. I express my heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and hope for the safety of those who are still missing,' he said.
He further urged the administration to expedite relief and rescue operations to assist those affected by the tragedy.
An old narrow bridge over the Indrayani River near Talegaon in Maharashtra's Pune district collapsed on Sunday afternoon, leaving at least four people dead and dozens injured, officials said.
The incident prompted authorities to launch immediate search and rescue operations.
According to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), 39 people were rescued and four bodies recovered.
'A narrow bridge over the Indrayani River in Kundmala, Pune, collapsed. 35 people were rescued initially by local efforts. NDRF, in joint ops with civil administration, rescued 4 more alive & recovered 4 bodies. Rescue operations are ongoing,' the NDRF said in a post on X.
The Maharashtra government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the families of those killed in the incident.'CM Devendra Fadnavis has announced that the state government will provide financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives in the bridge collapse incident on the Indrayani river near Talegaon in Pune district. Additionally, the state government will also bear the cost for the medical treatment of the injured,' the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said in a post on X.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who reached Cyprus, spoke to CM Fadnavis to take stock of the ongoing rescue and relief operations.
The Chief Minister expressed deep sorrow over the incident and said he is in constant touch with senior officials, including the Divisional Commissioner, District Collector, Superintendent of Police, and Tehsildar.'It was very sad to hear the news of the accident in which a bridge over the Indrayani river collapsed at Indori near Talegaon in Pune district. According to preliminary information, 2 people have died in this incident. I pay my heartfelt tributes to them. We share the grief of their families,' he said in a post on X.
He added, 'I am in constant touch with the Divisional Commissioner, District Collector, Superintendent of Police and the concerned Tehsildar regarding this incident. As some people have been swept away, a search is being carried out for them. NDRF has been deployed at the spot. Relief work has been given immediate impetus...all the agencies have been ordered to be put on alert mode...they have been admitted to the hospital for treatment.'
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke with CM Fadnavis and praised the NDRF's swift action. 'Deeply saddened by the tragic incident of the bridge collapse on the Indrayani River in Talegaon, Pune. Spoke with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and inquired about the present situation on the ground,' Shah said in a post on X.
'NDRF teams posted nearby quickly rushed to the site, joined the rescue operation, and saved several lives with remarkable promptness. Heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured,' he added. (ANI)

The Congress on Monday claimed that a key figure in the Adani 'scam' has Cypriot citizenship, and said the ongoing SEBI investigations into transactions involving the conglomerate have been hampered by lack of sharing of financial information by tax-haven countries and 'lack of pressure' by India. The opposition party's assertions come amid the ongoing visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Cyprus. 'The Prime Minister is in Cyprus on his way to Canada. Of course, he would have us believe that it is a pure coincidence that a key figure in the Modani scam has Cypriot citizenship,' Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said. The Cyprus-based fund New Leaina has reportedly about USD 420 million in Adani companies, he claimed. 'The 'ultimate beneficial owners' of this fund are linked to Amicorp, which is believed to have set up at least seven Adani promoter entities, seventeen offshore shell companies linked to Mr. Vinod Adani, and three Mauritius-based offshore investors in Adani Group stock,' Ramesh said in his post on X. All these transactions are part of the ongoing SEBI investigations which have been hampered by lack of sharing of financial information by these and other tax-haven countries and lack of pressure by India, Ramesh alleged. There was no immediate reaction from the Adani Group on the claims but it has denied all such allegations made by the Congress and other entities. The Congress has been persistent in its attack on the government since the Adani Group stocks took a beating on the bourses in the wake of US-based short-selling firm Hindenburg Research making a litany of allegations, including fraudulent transactions and share-price manipulation, on the conglomerate headed by industrialist Gautam Adani. The Adani Group has dismissed all the charges made by the Congress and others as lies, saying it complies with all laws and disclosure requirements. Noting that Cyprus gained independence from British rule on Aug 16, 1960, Ramesh also said that in the 1950s, India spearheaded the international campaign for the full decolonisation of the island. In the context of today's geopolitics it is worthwhile to recall that India's championing of the independence of Cyprus in the 1950s and thereafter became a sore point in our bilateral relations with Turkey, he said.

Ludhiana West constituency came into existence in 1977 and since then it has witnessed 10 assembly elections with Congress clinching the seat six times. The seat has a rich political legacy, having sent multiple ministers to the Punjab cabinet over the years. To begin with, Congress stalwart Harnam Das Johar won from here in 1980, 1985, 1992, and 2002, holding important portfolios such as Higher and School Education, Local Bodies, and Rehabilitation during his 2 terms i.e from 1992-1997 and 2002-2007. He has also remained Speaker of the Vidhan Sabha after winning from the seat. Bharat Bhushan Ashu, also from the Congress, secured back-to-back victories in 2012 and 2017 and served as the Food and Civil Supplies Minister (2017–2022). The Akali Dal also registered two victories from the seat in 1997 and in 2007. Kalakada family becomes model beneficiary of ‘Thalliki Vandanam'
Tirupati: The NDA government's flagship programme Thalliki Vandanam, launched on June 12, has emerged as a major relief for countless families across the State. Marking a clear departure from the earlier Amma Vodi scheme, which limited financial aid to one child per family, the new initiative offers support to all eligible children within a household, with no such cap. A notable example comes from Kalakada in Annamayya district, where eight children from a single extended family have benefited from the scheme. These children – siblings and cousins residing in the same locality, collectively received the aid, highlighting the broader and more inclusive outreach of the new policy. Under the scheme, the government provides financial assistance of Rs 15,000 per child, which is credited directly into the bank accounts of their mothers. However, only Rs 13,000 is disbursed directly, with the remaining Rs 2,000 allocated for the development of schools. According to officials, Babji's two sons, Sultan (Intermediate) and Mahbub Basha (Class 9) together received Rs 26,000. Ibrahim's three children, Gayaz (Class 9), Fayaz (Class 8), and Ayaz (Class 7) were credited with Rs 39,000. Similarly, Syed Basha's three children, Rihan (Class 5), Ayan (Class 3), and Arfa (Class 2) also received Rs 39,000. Altogether, the extended family received a total of Rs 1.04 lakh. Expressing their gratitude, family members commended the government for the timely financial support toward their children's education. Thalliki Vandanam is one of the key initiatives under the NDA's 'Super Six' assurances outlined in its election manifesto. It was launched by the state government to mark the completion of one year in office. The scheme aims to provide financial assistance to families struggling to meet educational expenses, covering students from Class 1 up to Intermediate, subject to eligibility criteria. Beyond financial support, the programme is also intended to improve educational outcomes by incentivising regular school attendance and reducing the economic burden on mothers, ensuring that no child is left behind due to financial constraints.
