Tesla debuts Model Y in India at record $70,000 price tag

MUMBAI, India: On July 15, Tesla officially launched the Model Y in India, pricing it at around 6 million rupees (approximately US$70,000) — its most expensive offering in any significant market. The launch in Mumbai comes as the U.S. automaker, facing slowing global sales and surplus factory capacity, turns to India with cautious optimism, despite CEO Elon Musk's past criticism of the country's steep import tariffs. Deliveries are expected to begin in the third quarter. Tesla is aiming for the premium electric vehicle (EV) segment in India, which currently represents just four percent of the nation's total car sales — the third-largest automobile market in the world. Rather than competing with domestic EV makers like Tata Motors and Mahindra, Tesla will primarily go head-to-head with luxury German brands such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz. On launch day, the company also inaugurated its first showroom in Mumbai, the capital of the western state of Maharashtra and the nation's commercial capital, and began accepting orders for the Model Y via its Indian website. This marks Tesla's long-anticipated entry into the Indian market, where Elon Musk had previously floated plans to build a factory. For now, Tesla will import vehicles into India — a market where combined import duties and taxes can exceed 100 percent, significantly inflating prices for local buyers. Despite these costs, Tesla has opted for imports as an initial strategy while continuing to push for tariff reductions. Tesla has long urged Indian authorities to lower import duties, and discussions between Indian officials and the U.S. government are reportedly ongoing in the context of a broader trade agreement. However, the cars displayed at the Mumbai showroom were manufactured in China. Tesla's U.S. plants currently do not produce right-hand drive models, which are required for India. In India, the Model Y rear-wheel drive costs 6 million rupees ($70,000), while the long-range rear-wheel drive version costs 6.8 million rupees ($79,000). By comparison, the Model Y starts at $44,990 in the United States, 263,500 yuan (around $36,700) in China, and 45,970 euros ($53,700) in Germany. Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system is available as an optional feature in India for 600,000 rupees ($7,200), with future software updates expected to offer more autonomous functionality. Security was tight at Tesla's Mumbai launch event, with police stationed outside the office complex to manage crowds and media. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who attended the event, said: "In the future, we hope to see Tesla establish R&D and manufacturing operations in India — and I am confident that, at the right time, they will consider it."

41,193 children rescued, 4960 missing women traced under Operation Muskan: CM Fadnavis

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday (July 16, 2025) revealed in the legislative assembly that, under Operation Muskan, 41,193 children were rescued and 4,960 missing women were traced, and 1,364 missing children were traced within a month under Operation Shodh. Calling the issue of missing women a reality, Mr. Fadnavis stated that in one month from April to May, 4960 missing women were traced and came across 106 women and 703 children, who were missing, but the case was registered. Responding to the question of MLC state legislative council Ambadas Danve, Mr. Fadnavis said, 'We are yet to effectively work on this issue, and yet to tap into the issue from the social angle. However, we will also include the missing person issue in 'Police Kaka' and 'Police Didi', which campaign for good touch-bad touch and other initiatives.' Mr. Danve suggested that the government conduct a social study to understand the cause, rather than treating it as a job. 'There are hotspots from where women go missing; these areas lack visible policing. The impact on ground level is only possible if it is seen as a social responsibility. Besides, these issues are to be seen from social angles, including child marriage and sexual violence,' he added. The issue of missing women was raised in the assembly after Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Sunil Shinde asked for the status of the proposal to 'Track missing women'. 'All states are connected to the Centre's missing women portal. The progress will be used to file a consolidated report,' Mr. Fadnavis responded. Citing Nagpur's case, Mr. Fadnavis said, '5897 women were missing, out of which 5210 were traced. This means 90% of the cases were traced. However, a problem arises in 4 to 5% of cases, which goes on the back burner.' To resolve this issue, Mr. Fadnavis has asked to establish a missing cell at each police station to keep track of these cases and an IPS-level officer to review the work every two months.

103 women, girls go missing in Maha daily, nearly 90% traced

1 2 Nagpur: Ninety per cent of 103 women and girls going missing every day between April 2024 and March 2025 (37,695 in all) in Maharashtra were traced, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis informed the state legislative council on Wednesday. In Nagpur city alone, 5,897 people — including 4,923 women and girls — were reported missing between January 2024 and May 2025. Of these, 5,210 persons were located, pushing Nagpur's recovery rate in missing person cases to over 90%, and in some instances as high as 97%. Fadnavis said dedicated operations like 'Operation Muskaan' and 'Operation Shodh' significantly improved the recovery rate across the state, with Nagpur emerging as one of the top-performing regions. "Targeted campaigns like Operation Muskaan and Operation Shodh have delivered visible results. Nagpur's success rate under these initiatives is among the highest," Fadnavis said while replying to a question by various legislators. State-wide, Operation Muskaan — focused on tracing missing children — helped recover 4,193 minors, while Operation Shodh, focused on women, helped locate 4,960 missing women and 1,364 children within a month-long drive. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cardiologists Recommend: Eat 1 Teaspoon Tonight – Wake Up With a Flatter Stomach Hollywood News | USA Click Here Undo Police also found 106 women and 703 children who had never been formally reported missing but were located during field operations. Fadnavis said that following Supreme Court guidelines, an FIR must be filed mandatorily in all missing person cases. "If a child is missing, it is immediately registered as a kidnapping case. This has improved police accountability and response time," he said. To institutionalise efforts, the state has established Missing Cells at every police station, headed by a woman officer. IPS officers at the rank of additional director general (ADG) now directly monitor missing cases and women's safety. The CM acknowledged that human trafficking remains a concern and said the govt is working to break such networks. Fadnavis also highlighted the role of Bharosa one-stop centres, which provide shelter, legal help, and counselling to women who leave home due to domestic or family issues. Schools are being targeted through the 'Police Kaka-Didi' initiative to educate children about safety, including procedures related to missing cases.

Over 4,000 women, 1,364 children traced through Operation Shodh between April and May: Fadnavis

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday informed the Maharashtra Legislative Council that under Operation Shodh, 4,960 missing women and 1,364 children were traced between April and May this year. 'Operation Muskan and Operation Shodh have been launched to search for missing children, women and girls in the state. Through this, a large number of missing children, girls and women have been found,' said Fadnavis adding that 106 women and 703 children, for whom no missing complaints were registered, were also found through the programmes. Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Sunil Shinde raised a starred question in this regard. Leader of Opposition Ambadas Danve, MLCs Chitra Wagh and Pragya Satav also participated in the discussion. Stating that the government has taken strict steps in the wake of the increasing incidents of women and girls going missing in the state, Fadnavis said as per the orders of the Supreme Court, it is now mandatory to register a case immediately if any person goes missing. If small children go missing, a case of kidnapping is registered. 'Out of the total 5,897 missing cases in Nagpur city, 5,210 persons have been traced, which is more than 90 percent… Under 'Operation Muskan', 41,193 boys and girls were traced between July 2015 and December 2024. The Supreme Court has taken note of this and many states have also adopted this scheme. A separate 'Operation Shodh' was implemented for women,' he said. The Chief Minister said orders have been given to set up a 'missing cell' in every police station. 'A woman police officer will be the head of this cell. Some women and girls get caught in the trap of human trafficking. Therefore, the government has initiated concrete measures in this regard,' he said. Fadnavis informed that a one-stop centre 'Bharosa' provides counseling, protection and legal aid to women. 'This centre is used by women who have left their homes due to domestic violence and family disputes. At the school level, awareness is created on sex education, good/bad touch under the 'Police Kaka-Didi' initiative. Now, information about 'missing persons' will also be included in this,' he said.
