I tried 3 hacks to stop my bins from smelling – a £1.50 trick made a total mess but a 55p buy was a total game changer

But to stop your dirty recycling from marinating in the heat and causing your neighbours to squirm, experts have revealed a variety of simple tips and tricks to keep your bins fresh all summer long.
According to Michael Bogoyavlenskiy, CEO of Cleaning Express, keeping your bins out of direct sunlight can help prevent foul smells.
And while it's important to empty your bin every couple of days and make sure to dispose of anything "particularly pungent", there's also a variety of cleaning hacks that can banish grim smells.
On a mission to ensure my recycling bin smells fresh this season, I, Abby Wilson, tested three simple hacks.
You probably already have at least two of these buys in your cupboards already, but don't worry if your purse is feeling tighter than ever before, as all three are super affordable.
While the cheapest hack will cost you just 49p, your bin will be so clean you'll be able to see your reflection thanks to a 55p trick.
Wash this
According to those at Busy Bins, a simple mixture of washing-up liquid and warm water will do the trick to banish seriously bad stenches from your bin.
So, I got my Marigolds on and dived headfirst into the bin - and yes, it was as grim as you could imagine.
In between holding back gags and wiping my watering eyes, I scrubbed the interior of the recycling bin with the purse-friendly two-ingredient solution.
I then gave the bin a quick rinse with a hose and I have to say, it looked pretty good.
Top 6 spring cleaning hacks
Whilst it wasn't great at getting rid of the tough stains and did require quite a bit of elbow grease (far more than I'd have hoped), it definitely cut through the strong smells.
It looked pretty good too and thanks to this cheap trick, your bins are sure to shine in no time.
While I used proper Fairy Liquid, if you're on a budget and are looking to pocket pennies where possible, you'll be thrilled to know that you can nab cheaper dish soap from just 49p from Savers.

Powerful paste
After a couple of weeks, it appeared that my bin had gone back to its old ways and was still looking a bit grim.
So I searched for something a bit stronger and bought myself a tub of The Pink Stuff, which you'll find for only £1.50 from Poundland, Sainsbury's and Dunelm.
While this isn't something I've heard many experts talk about when it comes to bin cleaning, I figured the multi-purpose paste which has been hailed as a 'miracle' product that is said to be 'tough on stains', could do the trick.
But after literally five seconds of scrubbing, I was already starting to regret my decision.
Yes, this thick paste is super versatile, but it made a total mess on my bin.
The household items you're not cleaning often enough
IF you want to ensure your home is squeaky clean, you'll need to listen up. Below are the household items you're forgetting to clean, and how to get them sparkling...
Remote Controls: Wipe with a disinfectant cloth. Use a cotton bud for crevices.
Light Switches: Wipe with a disinfectant wipe. Use a mild soap solution for tough stains.
Door Handles: Clean with an antibacterial spray. Wipe down regularly.
Underneath and Behind Appliances: Vacuum or sweep regularly. Mop with a suitable cleaner.
Shower Curtains and Liners: Wash in the washing machine. Use a bleach solution for stubborn mildew.
Kitchen Sponges and Dishcloths: Microwave damp sponges for one minute. Wash dishcloths in the washing machine.
Computer Keyboards and Mice: Use compressed air to remove debris. Wipe with a disinfectant wipe.
It was much more hassle than it was worth and there was far too much faff involved with getting rid of the white residue from my bin.
While I love using this product throughout my home, on my grubby oven and kitchen sink, I'm definitely not sold on using it to clean my bin.
Also, the scent is very faint, so it didn't work as well as I'd hoped to keep my bin smelling fresh.

Seriously strong
Disappointed with the mess The Pink Stuff made, not only on my bin but all over me too, I reached for a household hero I knew wouldn't let me down.

Not only do I use bleach on my loos, but I imagined it would work well on my bin too.
According to the Wheelie Bin Cleaning Service, using bleach, which you can buy for just 55p from Tesco, is a great way to effectively disinfect a bin.
The pros explained that bleach is a 'strong cleaner' that 'kills many bacteria, viruses, and fungi', whilst working to 'keep bins clean and fresh.'
Not only this, but the experts also recognised that it will 'break down tough stains, grease and grime in bins', whilst also 'making bins look new and clean again.'
Eager to let the powerful product do its work, I diluted some bleach with water and threw the solution over the inside and outside of my recycling bin.
I then grabbed a long brush to spread the solution and left it to work for a few minutes.
Moments later, I thoroughly rinsed the bin to get rid of any residue, which is highly important when using bleach as it can be harmful to the environment and wildlife.
As someone who would buy a bleach scented candle if it was available, I was overjoyed with the squeaky clean scent it left behind.
Not only was it a cheap cleaning solution, but it definitely smelt the best out of the bunch too.
But that wasn't all - my bin was left so clean (definitely the cleanest it has EVER looked), I could even see my reflection in it - yes, you heard that correctly.
I highly doubt I'll be popping outside and peering at my bin to check that my make-up and hair look decent, but if you really want your bins to shine, bleach may just be the thing for you.
Although it left me very impressed, the experts recommend that bleach should not be used for routine cleaning of bins due to environmental concerns and the damage it can do to plastic over time.
I'll definitely do this trick again, but for those eager to give it a try, make sure you switch up your cleaning methods, dilute it properly before us and always wear gloves.

TESCO is now selling an affordable dupe of an iconic designer perfume that is worth £335. The supermarket chain recently released a range of fragrances replicate high end brands, on sale for just £7. 4 4 4 Laura of the moneysavingofficial Instagram account, which posts money saving deals and tips to followers, shared the products now available at Tesco to her social media. These Tesco finds could save you a significant amount of money on fragrances that smell very similar to a lot of high end brands. One of those include a perfume that is selling for £335 by Maison Francis Kurkdjian Paris, which is their Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait de Parfum Spray. The equivalent fragrance being sold at Tesco is the Skin Saints Eau de Parfum Rouge, scented as Amber & Warm Woods for £8. For Clubcard members it is even cheaper, at £7, and comes in a 100ml bottle which is 30ml more than the high end version. This Eau de Parfum Rouge from Tesco is described as being "a unique, luxurious fragrance featuring warm saffron and rich amber wood notes". The Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait de Parfum Spray is said to have three distinctive accords, with grandiflorum jasmine, almond and ambergris notes. Carolina Herrera fans can get their hands on a £7 dupe of their iconic Good Girl Eau de Parfum, which is being sold at Boots for £126 in an 80ml. Tesco's version is the Skin Saints Eau De Parfum Passion, with Jasmine and Tonka. This is a "seductive, sophisticated fragrance featuring rich tonka and alluring jasmine notes." Primark drops brand new Benefit dupes ahead of summer - there's a copycat of the iconic bronzer and even a freckle pen Whilst it does not come in the same impressive stiletto shaped packaging as the original, the Passion has received good reviews from Tesco reaching an average rating of 4.9 stars. One customer wrote: "As a 28 female this scent is absolutely stunning, lasts from morning to night and really is a money saver as well as a lovely scent to wear." Another added: "I love this perfume and it lasts for a long time! "Great for the price and smells a bit like Carolina Herrera good girl!" There is also Santal from Tesco with Sandalwood and Warm Spice scents. This has "warming and comforting tones much like Santal 33," Laura says. The original Santal 33 comes from Le Labo, and is priced at £238 for the 100mL bottle rather than £7 at Tesco. Also spotted was Cerise Cherry & Blossom Eau de Parfum from Skin Saints. This has been likened to Tom Ford's Lost Cherry selling for £395 for 100mL. The scent features cherry and warm almond notes, making it a fruity and vanilla fragrance. Sweaty knee-highs in summer is celebrity style crime we need to give the boot… they should only be worn in open field
WHAT are the must-haves this summer on your holiday packing list? Cossie? Tick. Suncream? Tick. Boots?! 8 For me, and most of us, there's not enough room in my 55x40x20cm cabin bag to cram in a pair of knee-highs. In a small footwear triumph, I don't mean Ugg boots. Thankfully that fugly trend seems to have been killed off for now. What I am referring to is heavy, clompy, sweat-inducing leather boots. An autumn perennial, knee-highs are a hit with celebrities and fashionistas. They're also on the pins of youngsters at various summer events and dance floors. While I'm all for getting the most wear out of clothes — because, let's face it, the majority of boots are pretty expensive — slipping into leather during a 30C-plus heatwave is my idea of hell. So why am I seeing the style set stomp around in them everywhere? The trend is a result of 'concert core'. Cast your mind back to last year when Taylor Swift, was prancing around in a bejewelled bodysuit and boots on her Eras tour. Beyonce sends fans into a frenzy with surprise Destiny's Child reunion during final Cowboy Carter show And pint-size pop star Sabrina Carpenter donned Sixties-style PVC go-go boots during her Short n' Sweet shows. A key look Then earlier this year, Beyonce line-danced in chaps and thigh-high, tasseled cowboy boots during her Cowboy Carter tour. All of these extravagant shows saw thousands of fans turn up in copycat footwear. According to PrettyLittleThing, online searches for western boots rose 85 per cent in in the run up to Beyonce's shows. So, the 'Beyonce effect' has cemented boots as a key look for summer. Meanwhile, the trend has been championed by the catwalk. Luxury brand Chloe, responsible for the boho revival, gave it a twist with biker boots and slouchy suede styles on its summer runway. And supermodel Bella Hadid was spotted wearing brown boots in sunny London in May — but she is in her cowgirl era, thanks to dating real-life cowboy Adan Banuelos. A forgivable style crime for someone who lives and breathes that way of life, I suppose. 8 8 8 Even model Alexa Chung — known for vintage ballet flats and loafers — is getting in on the act, pairing black patent boots with what looks like a nighty and barn jacket. This mish-mash styling is popular among Gen-Z. TikTok fashion influencers also advocate for the 'wrong shoe theory,' which translates to wearing an unlikely shoe with your outfit. For instance, a delicate, lace white dress with Hells Angels biker boots. Think Olivia Rodrigo performing at Glastonbury this year. Or an oversized blue shirt with clompy buckled boots, like Kourtney Kardashian out and about with her one-year-old son Rocky. I can get on board with the aesthetic, but can you imagine the horrid hot and sweaty congestion of your calf encased in a cheap high street pair, which are probably made from plastic? And just think of the blisters. Dua Lipa went for a similar buckled pair when attending a festival recently. At £1,840, the Miu Miu boots are unattainable for most of us, but at least they looked practical for stomping through fields and complemented the singer's denim shorts. Hollywood star Kate Hudson wore dalmatian-print cowboy boots with hot pants and a blouse to Coachella festival — and she didn't look out of place. Along with boots at festivals, my millennial brain can forgive those who wear ankle boots in the summer. It was a strong look from our glory days paired with a skinny jean or mini-skirt. But anything higher than the lower calf breaks me out in a sweat. I appreciate navigating what to wear in summer is never easy. Is it going to rain? Will you be fainting in commuter heat? Will you need a puffer jacket for the Arctic air-con? 8 8 But now we've thrown knee-high boots into the mix. If a rainy day is on the cards then winner-winner with your practical footwear. But if not, and the day turns out to be a scorcher, your feet will be squelching around in sweat while your legs chafe. For festivals, camping and fly-fishing, boots are the right call. If I get a whiff of the rising odour from someone's sticky sweat buckets it best be in an open field. Anywhere else is unacceptable.

Another, Aimeechad, said: 'This is cute but I don't think it's the most flattering on me. I like the idea of it, on skinny people it looks super cool.' She said she has already seen the dress on second-hand site Vinted for £10. A further TikToker said that it's not a frock for curvy girls. So while it's a lovely item, the problem seems to lie with the slightly dropped waist line, as well as insufficient fabric for those with larger boobs.
