UN chief urges tech sector to power data centers with renewables
The secretary general made his case for why he believes energy-hungry data centers should lock in a future of clean energy, saying the transition to renewable energy is inevitable, even as some countries and companies still embrace fossil fuels.
"The future is being built in the cloud," Guterres said in a speech at the United Nations' headquarters in New York. "It must be powered by the sun, the wind, and the promise of a better world."
His appeal to technology companies comes a day before U.S. President Donald Trump unveils his administration's AI Action Plan, which is expected to contain a number of executive actions aimed at easing restrictions on land use and energy production to unleash artificial intelligence development.
Trump has declared a national energy emergency to address the vast amounts of energy needed by data centers to power AI to compete with China and enable him to ease environmental restrictions to build more power plants fueled by gas, coal and nuclear.
Top economic rivals, the U.S. and China, are locked in a technological arms race over who can dominate AI.
At the same time, Trump has issued executive orders and signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that curtails the use of incentives for wind and solar energy, which dominate the queue of new power generation waiting to connect to the electric grid.
Guterres also appealed to governments to ready new national climate plans to deliver the goals of the Paris climate agreement by September that will lock-in a transition away from fossil fuels.
He said this moment is an opportunity for governments to meet all new electricity demand with renewables and use water sustainably in cooling systems.

German finance minister to push for steel quotas on Washington trip
BERLIN, Aug 4 (Reuters) - German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil will advocate for a quota system on steel exports to be included in the EU's trade deal with the United States at a meeting with his U.S. counterpart, Scott Bessent, later on Monday, he told a radio broadcaster. "There is talk of a quota system for steel, and it would be good if there were one," Klingbeil told Deutschlandfunk radio on Monday before his planned meeting in Washington. There are a number of chapters that have not yet been finalised in the trade deal struck, said Klingbeil, and steel is a particularly important issue for the German economy and jobs. "I will test out what steps the American government is prepared to take and what the solution might look like," said Klingbeil, even though the EU is responsible for negotiations. The EU's trade deal with Trump in July was greeted with a mix of relief and anger, with tariffs set at 15% for most products but negotiations continuing for certain sectors, including steel and aluminium, which carry tariffs of 50%. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had said on Friday the EU will negotiate with the United States on steel, with a focus on quotas that can be exported without too high tariffs. Klingbeil also urged quick clarification of other outstanding details in the trade dispute, including the investments promised by the EU and in the energy sector. "It should happen in the next few days," he said.

HONG KONG, Aug 4 (Reuters Breakingviews) - It's hard to imagine a better start for Nintendo's (7974.T), opens new tab new console: the Switch 2, a direct follow-up to its famously successful Switch, sold 5.8 million units during the first fiscal quarter, a record launch for the industry, per Jefferies. The company also moved 5.6 million units of launch title Mario Kart World, according to its earnings update on Friday, nearly one game sold for every console moved despite concerns that the game's unusually high price of $80 would prove too much. That sales ratio is flattered by Nintendo making the game a pack-in with the console—its most expensive ever, at $450—but underscores the willingness of fans to shell out more cash for both. The hardware for the American market is shipped from Vietnam, yet analysts at JPMorgan estimate that the Donald Trump administration's decision to double tariffs on the country to 20% will have little effect on earnings until next year. Little wonder shares jumped almost 6% on Monday. The $110 billion company nonetheless struck a typically conservative tone in its latest guidance, maintaining its sales forecast of just 15 million Switch 2 units for the current financial year even as it noted tariffs had 'no significant impact'.
