UN chief urges tech sector to power data centers with renewables

Reuters22-07-2025
WASHINGTON, July 22 (Reuters) - U.N. Secretary General António Guterres on Tuesday called on tech companies to power the build out of data centers with 100% renewable energy by 2030, even as the industry turns to gas and coal-fired power plants to meet surging demand.
The secretary general made his case for why he believes energy-hungry data centers should lock in a future of clean energy, saying the transition to renewable energy is inevitable, even as some countries and companies still embrace fossil fuels.
"The future is being built in the cloud," Guterres said in a speech at the United Nations' headquarters in New York. "It must be powered by the sun, the wind, and the promise of a better world."
His appeal to technology companies comes a day before U.S. President Donald Trump unveils his administration's AI Action Plan, which is expected to contain a number of executive actions aimed at easing restrictions on land use and energy production to unleash artificial intelligence development.
Trump has declared a national energy emergency to address the vast amounts of energy needed by data centers to power AI to compete with China and enable him to ease environmental restrictions to build more power plants fueled by gas, coal and nuclear.
Top economic rivals, the U.S. and China, are locked in a technological arms race over who can dominate AI.
At the same time, Trump has issued executive orders and signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that curtails the use of incentives for wind and solar energy, which dominate the queue of new power generation waiting to connect to the electric grid.
Guterres also appealed to governments to ready new national climate plans to deliver the goals of the Paris climate agreement by September that will lock-in a transition away from fossil fuels.
He said this moment is an opportunity for governments to meet all new electricity demand with renewables and use water sustainably in cooling systems.

German finance minister to push for steel quotas on Washington trip

BERLIN, Aug 4 (Reuters) - German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil will advocate for a quota system on steel exports to be included in the EU's trade deal with the United States at a meeting with his U.S. counterpart, Scott Bessent, later on Monday, he told a radio broadcaster. "There is talk of a quota system for steel, and it would be good if there were one," Klingbeil told Deutschlandfunk radio on Monday before his planned meeting in Washington. There are a number of chapters that have not yet been finalised in the trade deal struck, said Klingbeil, and steel is a particularly important issue for the German economy and jobs. "I will test out what steps the American government is prepared to take and what the solution might look like," said Klingbeil, even though the EU is responsible for negotiations. The EU's trade deal with Trump in July was greeted with a mix of relief and anger, with tariffs set at 15% for most products but negotiations continuing for certain sectors, including steel and aluminium, which carry tariffs of 50%. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had said on Friday the EU will negotiate with the United States on steel, with a focus on quotas that can be exported without too high tariffs. Klingbeil also urged quick clarification of other outstanding details in the trade dispute, including the investments promised by the EU and in the energy sector. "It should happen in the next few days," he said.

Breakingviews - Nintendo can flex its pricing power with Switch 2

HONG KONG, Aug 4 (Reuters Breakingviews) - It's hard to imagine a better start for Nintendo's (7974.T), opens new tab new console: the Switch 2, a direct follow-up to its famously successful Switch, sold 5.8 million units during the first fiscal quarter, a record launch for the industry, per Jefferies. The company also moved 5.6 million units of launch title Mario Kart World, according to its earnings update on Friday, nearly one game sold for every console moved despite concerns that the game's unusually high price of $80 would prove too much. That sales ratio is flattered by Nintendo making the game a pack-in with the console—its most expensive ever, at $450—but underscores the willingness of fans to shell out more cash for both. The hardware for the American market is shipped from Vietnam, yet analysts at JPMorgan estimate that the Donald Trump administration's decision to double tariffs on the country to 20% will have little effect on earnings until next year. Little wonder shares jumped almost 6% on Monday. The $110 billion company nonetheless struck a typically conservative tone in its latest guidance, maintaining its sales forecast of just 15 million Switch 2 units for the current financial year even as it noted tariffs had 'no significant impact'. The more meaningful move came in a separate announcement of price rises for models of the original Switch averaging 14%, which did not mention tariffs but warned price adjustments for the sequel console 'may be necessary in the future'. An equivalent 14% hike to the Switch 2's sticker price would cost consumers more than $510 a pop — well over rival Sony's more powerful PlayStation 5, whose disc-free model also retails for $450. What Sony does not have are entries in longstanding series such as Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda and Pokemon, which have driven steady sales of the Kyoto-based games maker's consoles for decades. High review scores for the Switch 2-exclusive Donkey Kong Bananza also bode well for sales in the second half. Moreover, Sony will lack a blockbuster contender for the holiday season thanks to the delay of Grand Theft Auto VI, which had been expected to boost PS5 sales this year. That gives Nintendo an opening to make gains at the margins, yet there is a risk it could overplay its hand if it raises prices too high too quickly. A recession in the U.S., which accounts for 40% of net sales, could also dent earnings. Even so, the bumper sales so far make a solid case for the company to charge gamers more for its wares, and sooner than later. Follow Hudson Lockett on Bluesky, opens new tab and X, opens new tab.

iOS 18.6 Battery Drain: The ULTIMATE Fix Guide

The release of iOS 18.6 introduces new features and improvements, but many users have reported persistent battery drain issues. Whether you own an older iPhone or the latest model, maintaining optimal battery performance is essential for making sure your device lasts throughout the day. By making targeted adjustments to your settings and usage habits, you can effectively reduce unnecessary power consumption. Below is a detailed video from iReviews to help you address battery drain on iPhones running iOS 18.6. Watch this video on YouTube. Update Your iPhone and Apps Keeping your iPhone and apps updated is a critical first step in managing battery performance. Software updates often include bug fixes and system optimizations designed to improve energy efficiency. To ensure your device is running the latest iOS 18.6 release, navigate to 'Settings > General > Software Update' and install any available updates. Outdated apps can also contribute to battery drain by conflicting with the operating system. To prevent this, enable automatic app updates by going to 'Settings > App Store > App Updates.' This ensures your apps remain compatible with the latest iOS version without requiring manual intervention. Analyze and Manage Battery Usage iOS 18.6 offers a detailed breakdown of battery consumption, allowing you to identify which apps or features are using the most power. Access this information by navigating to 'Settings > Battery.' Review the list of apps and their battery usage percentages. If certain apps are consuming excessive power, consider uninstalling them or limiting their activity. For apps that run in the background, disable 'Background App Refresh' under 'Settings > General > Background App Refresh.' This analysis helps you make informed decisions about which apps to keep and which settings to adjust for better battery performance. Reduce Haptic Feedback Haptic feedback enhances the tactile experience of using your iPhone, but it can also contribute to battery drain. Adjusting or disabling these features can help conserve energy. Go to 'Settings > Sounds & Haptics.' Turn off or reduce features like 'System Haptics' and 'Music Haptics.' This change is particularly useful if you don't rely heavily on haptic responses for navigation or notifications. Turn Off Unused Voice Features Voice-related features, such as Siri's always-on listening and vocal shortcuts, can drain your battery by keeping the microphone active. Disabling these features can help reduce power consumption. To turn off vocal shortcuts, go to 'Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control' and toggle the feature off. For Siri, navigate to 'Settings > Siri & Search' and disable 'Listen for 'Hey Siri.'' You can still activate Siri manually using the side button. These adjustments ensure that voice features only run when you need them, minimizing their impact on battery life. Disable Sound Recognition Sound recognition is an accessibility feature that continuously monitors for specific sounds, such as alarms or doorbells. While helpful, it can consume significant CPU power. If you don't rely on this feature, disable it by going to 'Settings > Accessibility > Sound Recognition.' This simple change can free up system resources and improve battery performance. Manage Location Services Location services are essential for navigation and emergency features, but many apps and system services use location data unnecessarily. Adjusting these settings can help conserve battery life. Go to 'Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services' and review app permissions. Set location access for non-essential apps to 'While Using the App' or turn it off entirely. Under 'System Services,' disable non-critical features like 'Location-Based Suggestions' while keeping essential ones, such as 'Emergency Calls & SOS' and 'Find My iPhone,' enabled. These changes strike a balance between functionality and battery efficiency. Optimize AirDrop Settings AirDrop is a convenient feature for sharing files, but leaving it enabled when not in use can drain your battery. Set AirDrop to 'Receiving Off' via 'Control Center' or 'Settings > General > AirDrop.' Disable the 'Bring Devices Together' feature if you rarely use it. This ensures that AirDrop only activates when needed, reducing unnecessary power consumption. Minimize Widgets and Notifications Widgets and notifications provide quick access to information but can drain your battery, especially those that require constant updates, such as weather or news widgets. Limit the number of widgets on your home and lock screens. Remove unnecessary widgets by long-pressing on them and selecting 'Remove Widget.' Reduce notification activity by going to 'Settings > Notifications' and disabling alerts for non-essential apps. By minimizing these features, you can reduce background activity and extend your device's battery life. Adjust Apple Intelligence Features Apple Intelligence features, such as personalized recommendations and proactive suggestions, can increase background activity and consume battery power. Disable these features under 'Settings > Siri & Search' or 'Settings > Notifications' if they are not essential to your daily use. This adjustment helps reduce unnecessary system activity, allowing your battery to last longer. Final Thoughts Addressing battery drain on iOS 18.6 requires a combination of software updates, feature adjustments, and mindful usage habits. Regularly monitoring battery usage, disabling non-essential features, and keeping your device and apps updated are key strategies for optimizing battery performance. These steps not only improve your iPhone's daily functionality but also contribute to its long-term health, making sure you get the most out of your device.
