Medlab Middle East spotlights AI in African diagnostics as the 24th edition of the event concludes

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Amid rapid transformation in Africa's healthcare sector, Medlab Middle East hosted a dedicated session today on ' Doing Business in Africa - Transforming Diagnostic Business Models with AI and other Technologies to Access New Markets '. Led by the African Business Coalition for Health (ABCHealth), the event brought together industry leaders, policymakers and healthcare innovators to explore AI-driven solutions and the technological advancements shaping Africa's diagnostics landscape.
With growing healthcare demands and underserved markets, Africa presents significant opportunities for businesses leveraging AI, automation and data-driven solutions. The ABCHealth session highlighted the innovative approaches, key market-entry strategies, and technology-driven collaborations that enable businesses to tap into Africa's dynamic and evolving healthcare ecosystem, fostering sustainable growth and improved health outcomes.
During the welcome address, Dr Mories Atok i, CEO, African Business Coalition for Health (ABCHealth), Nigeria said: 'Whether you represent a government body, a private enterprise, or an academic institution, the contributions today matter. Together, we have the opportunity to overcome barriers and harness the power of artificial intelligence and other technologies to transform the diagnostics business models that will define the future of healthcare in the African continent. Today is about maximising the opportunities to exchange ideas, network, connect and inspire one another.'
The opening keynote session by Professor Hatem Mostafa ElGabaly, Former Minister of Health, Egypt, highlighted the importance of African countries and the opportunities to support and promote businesses from the country.
He said, 'The current state of health diagnostics in Africa is prohibited by the limited access to advanced diagnostic tools. In some regions, there is only one radiologist per 500,000 people. In addition, there is a high disease burden with an inadequate healthcare infrastructure. Africa accounts for 24% of the global disease burden but only 3% of the global health workforce. This underscores the importance of investment, which has the potential to improve health outcomes and economic growth, as well as utilising technology to leapfrog traditional healthcare models.'
In addition to the Africa-focused session, Medlab Middle East has hosted two high-level breakfast forums this week, which brought together global and regional laboratory leaders to discuss the key issues shaping the future of diagnostics and healthcare.
The Global Lab Leaders Breakfast Forum gathered Medlab portfolio global advisers, scientific chairs, international partners and stakeholders to tackle the global harmonisation of laboratory practices. Discussions at the new forum also explored the critical role of labs in managing global health crises, fostering international collaboration, and shaping the future of laboratory medicine.
Themed 'Strengthening cooperation amongst laboratories in the GCC', the GCC Lab Leaders Forum at Medlab Middle East brought together officials, experts and specialists from both public and private sector laboratories and national standardisation bodies across the region. The forum focused on strengthening laboratory networks region-wide, with topics addressed including career pathways for medical laboratory professionals and the formation of a GCC medical lab alliance.
Medlab Middle East concludes today having featured over 800 exhibitors from over 40 countries and welcoming an expected attendee count of 20,000 visitors. In addition to the ABCHealth Forum and Leaders' Breakfast Forums, new features this year have included the Women's Health Leadership Forum, Precision Medicine Leadership Forum and the CME-accredited Lab Automation conference track.
The event has brought together exhibitors and visitors from more than 180 countries, providing an unrivalled platform to showcase the latest innovations and discover a wide variety of cutting-edge medical laboratory products and services.

Rwanda quits Central African bloc in dispute with Congo
Rwanda has said it would withdraw from the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), underscoring diplomatic tensions in the region over an offensive this year by Rwanda-backed M23 rebels in eastern Congo. Kigali had expected to assume the chairmanship of the 11-member bloc at a meeting on Saturday in Equatorial Guinea. Instead, the bloc kept Equatorial Guinea in the role, which Rwanda's foreign ministry denounced as a violation of its rights. Rwanda, in a statement, condemned Congo's "instrumentalization" of the bloc and saw "no justification for remaining in an organization whose current functioning runs counter to its founding principles." It wasn't clear if Rwanda's exit from the bloc would take immediate effect. The office of Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi said in a statement that ECCAS members had "acknowledged the aggression against the Democratic Republic of Congo by Rwanda and ordered the aggressor country to withdraw its troops from Congolese soil." M23 seized eastern Congo's two largest cities earlier this year, with the advance leaving thousands dead and raising concerns of an all-out regional war. African leaders along with Washington and Doha have been trying to broker a peace deal. Congo, the UN and Western powers accuse Rwanda of supporting M23 by sending troops and weapons. Rwanda has long denied helping M23, saying its forces were acting in self-defence against Congo's army and ethnic Hutu militiamen linked to the 1994 Rwandan genocide that killed around 1 million people, mostly ethnic Tutsis. US President Donald Trump's administration hopes to strike a peace accord between Congo and Rwanda that would also facilitate billions in Western investment in the region, which is rich in minerals including tantalum, gold, cobalt, copper and lithium. ECCAS was established in the 1980s to foster cooperation in areas like security and economic affairs among its member states.

Sierra Leone's Ministry of Trade and Industry, African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, and Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Join Forces to Build National Capacity for African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Implementation
The Ministry of Trade and Industry of Sierra Leone, in collaboration with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), is conducting a four-day capacity building workshop for the National Implementation Committee (NIC) on the AfCFTA. Taking place from 10 to 13 June 2025 in Freetown, with hybrid participation, the workshop aims to equip key national stakeholders with the knowledge, tools, and coordination mechanisms required to implement the AfCFTA effectively. This collaborative effort reflects Sierra Leone's strong commitment to leveraging the opportunities of the AfCFTA, which brings together a market of over 1.4 billion people with a combined GDP of $3.4 trillion. As the national coordinating body for AfCFTA implementation, the Ministry is leading efforts to ensure that Sierra Leone's institutions are fully prepared to operationalize the Agreement in alignment with national development priorities. The workshop will focus on critical areas of the AfCFTA Agreement and its protocols, including: Rules of Origin Digital Trade Intellectual Property Rights Women and Youth in Trade Trade Facilitation Key findings from Sierra Leone's AfCFTA Readiness Assessment Participants include representatives from the public and private sectors, civil society, and development partners. The training is designed to strengthen institutional coordination, enhance technical understanding of AfCFTA instruments, and promote inclusive trade practices. 'This workshop is a crucial step in ensuring that Sierra Leone is not only ready to trade under the AfCFTA, but also strategically positioned to benefit from it,' said a representative of the Ministry of Trade and Industry. 'Our collaboration with ECA and the AfCFTA Secretariat is key to building the technical foundation and partnerships we need to succeed.' The AfCFTA Secretariat and ECA are providing technical support, facilitating knowledge-sharing, and delivering expert insights based on continental experiences and best practices. This initiative also supports broader national policy goals, including export diversification, digital transformation, and inclusive growth, as outlined in Sierra Leone's National Trade Strategy and Medium-Term National Development Plan.
