Penang highway sweep nets 98 motorcycles as police crack down on ‘mat rempits', arrest nine for reckless riding
BUKIT MERTAJAM, May 11 — Police seized 98 motorcycles belonging to mat rempits (illegal street racers) in an integrated operation along the North-South Expressway (PLUS) from Seberang Jaya to Sama Gagah early today.
The Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) District Police Headquarters (IPD) said in a statement tonight that 'Op Tutup Samseng Jalanan Bersepadu' targeted illegal racing hotspots, with 350 motorcycles inspected and 245 summonses issued for various traffic offenses.
'Nine individuals were arrested under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving,' it said.
Authorities also noted groups of teenage spectators gathering along the highway during the weekend races, where modified bikes reached excessive speeds, rode against traffic, and created noise disturbances - endangering both riders and other motorists.
The integrated operation involved personnel from SPT Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division, Seberang Jaya Police Station, Penang Contingent Headquarters, Bukit Aman Highway Patrol Unit (EMPV), and PLUS Auxiliary Police.
Police reminded the public to abide by road laws and regulations for everyone's safety and stressed that such operations would continue to be carried out regularly. — Bernama

LABUAN: The Labuan Immigration Department (JIM) has detained 15 foreign nationals during an enforcement operation yesterday (June 11) at several locations suspected of housing undocumented migrants here. Its director, Raymond Entalai said those arrested comprised three men, six women, four boys, and two girls -- all Filipino nationals. These foreigners are suspected of committing various immigration offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155) during the raids carried out from 1 am tp 4 am. This includes action against those who hire or harbour undocumented migrants.

Report on alleged sukuk fund misappropriation linked to Klang Valley highway project ready in two months, says MACC chief
BANGI, June 12 — The investigation report on the alleged misappropriation of sukuk funds meant for the construction of a highway in the Klang Valley is expected to be completed within the next one to two months, according to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the probe is progressing well and statements have been recorded from 53 witnesses so far. He added that more witnesses are expected to be called soon to assist in completing the investigation. 'This case will take about one or two months to complete as there are many aspects to examine and documents to analyse, including financial statements,' he said. He was speaking at a press conference after the 2nd Convocation Ceremony of the MACC's Certified Law Enforcement Programme here today. Azam said the recording of a statement from a person with the title 'Tan Sri' resumed today after a six-hour session was conducted at the individual's residence yesterday. Earlier, media reports stated that the MACC had seized various assets, including handbags, jewellery, luxury vehicles, watches, cash and high-end properties, collectively estimated at RM32 million, believed to belong to a highway concessionaire bearing the 'Tan Sri' title. In a separate case, Azam clarified that the statement from renowned fashion designer Datuk Jovian Mandagie was recorded yesterday in Jakarta, not Bali, as previously reported. It was earlier reported that the MACC investigation team would be in Jakarta for two days to record the statement of the 39-year-old designer, who is Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob's former son-in-law, in connection with an investigation into asset ownership involving the former prime minister. Ismail Sabri had been called in multiple times to the MACC headquarters to assist in investigations related to corruption and money laundering involving expenditures and funding for the promotion and publicity of the 'Keluarga Malaysia' programme during his tenure as prime minister from August 2021 to November 2022. — Bernama

Yusoff Rawther freed of drug trafficking, fake pistols possession charges
The High Court in Kuala Lumpur ruled that the prosecution failed to prove that Yusoff Rawther had knowledge, custody, and control of the drugs and fake pistols. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Former research assistant Yusoff Rawther, who has been held in remand for nine months, walked out of court a free man today after the High Court acquitted him of drug trafficking and the possession of two imitation pistols. Justice Jamil Hussin said the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case on both charges as it was unable to prove all elements of the offences with credible evidence. 'The prosecution failed to prove that Yusoff had knowledge, custody and control of the drugs and fake pistols. 'The accused is acquitted and discharged without being called to enter his defence,' Jamil said after hearing oral submissions. Yusoff was accused of trafficking in 305g of cannabis found in his vehicle when it was parked in front of the Kuala Lumpur police surau at 10.15am on Sept 6, 2024. The drugs were allegedly wrapped in a black plastic bag. He was also charged with possessing fake pistols outside the Senada Condominium on Jalan Bukit Kiara at 9.25am the same day. The fake firearms possession charge, under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960, carried a maximum penalty of one year in prison, a fine of up to RM5,000, or both, upon conviction. The drug trafficking charge, framed under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, provided for the death penalty or 30 years' imprisonment as well as a whipping of not less than 12 lashes. Yusoff's defence was that the drugs and pistols were planted to frame him. He was held at the Sungai Buloh prison as bail is not allowed for those charged with drug trafficking. Jamil, who is scheduled to retire in November, also said the two investigating officers failed to investigate Yusoff's claim, made to the recording officer during detention, that he was a victim of entrapment by a certain individual. 'The police officers had ample time to verify his statement but did not do so,' he said, adding that this had prejudiced the accused. Deputy public prosecutors Sabri Othman, Shahrizzat Amadan, and R Haravind appeared for the prosecution. Lawyers Rafique Rashid Ali, Gurdial Singh Nijar, Nurmustanir Nor, and Amirul Ar-Rashid Azman acted for Yusoff.
