'Clair Obscur: Expedition 33' Publisher Says Game Benefitted From 'The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered' Launch

Geek Culture06-05-2025

It seemed like the launch of Sandfall Interactive's turn-based role-playing video game, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 , would have been negatively affected by the shadow drop of Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered , but according to its publisher Kepler Interactive, this wasn't the case, as the games' simultaneous launch helped to boost excitement for the RPG genre with both titles benefitting as a result.
Speaking to The Game Business, Kepler Interactive's senior portfolio manager Matt Handrahan explained how Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 managed to beat the odds despite facing stiff competition from Bethesda's highly anticipated remaster. The two games both launched in the same week, with the former released on 24 April and the latter two days earlier.
'We always knew that Expedition 33 had a very specific identity,' Handrahan noted. 'When I was in the press, I saw the Western-style RPG and the Japanese-style RPG as having quite different appeals and audiences. I knew plenty of people [who] would play an Elder Scrolls game that wouldn't necessarily play Final Fantasy and vice versa.'
'Also, by the time that we rolled around, we had momentum of our own and we felt pretty confident that we could stand beside it. I think there were other aspects, like the price point we were at and the inclusion in Game Pass,' he added, 'So we knew we would have a lot of interest around the game. We were confident in that. And it went as well as it possibly could have done in our eyes. And, actually, proximity to Oblivion didn't seem to harm us at all. In many ways, I think it just drew attention to quality RPGs that week and everybody was thinking and talking about the genre.'
And its results speak for themselves, as Clair Obscur Expedition 33 has proven to be a big hit, soaring past one million copies sold within the first three days of launch while also gaining an all-time peak of 145,063 concurrent players on Steam at the time of writing, an impressive feat considering the relatively small size of its development team.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered , on the other hand, has unsurprisingly seen its fair share of success as a remaster of such a classic title, with over four million players since launch and raking up an all-time peak of 216,784 concurrent players on Steam.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge Gaming Test — Wuthering Waves, Zenless Zone Zero, Genshin Impact & PUBG Mobile

All things considered, the Samsung Galaxy S25 series meets the mark for a slim profile. At 162 grams and 7.2 mm thick, the base model packs compact muscle for work and play, but its newest addition, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, goes even leaner and meaner without skimping on performance. The device fits a Snapdragon Elite 8 processor and Adreno 830 GPU into its 5.8 mm-thin chassis, which accompanies a 6.7-inch QHD+ 120Hz display (3,200 x 1,800 pixels) for viewing enjoyment. It also inherits the same 200-megapixel camera from its Ultra sibling, alongside the full suite of Galaxy AI features, establishing itself as a competent all-rounder. Naturally, the horsepower extends to mobile gaming, and there's plenty to like about here. The lightweight form factor affords better grip and comfort in the hand, and it passed the gaming gauntlet of Wuthering Waves , Zenless Zone Zero , Genshin Impact , and PUBG: Mobile with flying colours. Frame rate drops were kept to a minimum, with surprisingly capable thermal management keeping overheating at bay even under heavy loads. Check out the performance of the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge in the video above, spanning benchmarking indicators, starting and ending temperatures, and more. The S$1,628 base model features 12GB of RAM and 256GB of ROM, while the 512GB iteration retails for S$1,808. Max Returns As HBO Max (Again) After 2 Years Of Rebranding

Here's an official announcement that sounds like a joke but isn't: Max, the streaming service formerly known as HBO Max, is changing its name back to….wait for it, HBO Max. The rebranding will take place this summer, two years after Warner Bros. Discovery dropped 'HBO' from the title. The effort was even more short-lived in Southeast Asia, including Singapore, where it only launched last November with the Standard and Ultimate subscription tiers. More recently, its logo was also tweaked to the classic black-and-white HBO colour scheme, replacing the purple background from before. 'Today, we are bringing back HBO, the brand that represents the highest quality in media, to further accelerate that growth in the years ahead,' David Zaslav, president and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, said in a news release. Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content, added: 'With the course we are on and strong momentum we are enjoying, we believe HBO Max far better represents our current consumer proposition. And it clearly states our implicit promise to deliver content that is recognised as unique and, to steal a line we always said at HBO, worth paying for.' The company is no stranger to name changes, with its origins dating back to HBO Go, established as the original streaming service for HBO cable users in 2010. The release of HBO Now followed in 2015, allowing non-cable subscribers to stream content before both platforms were absorbed into HBO Max. To say that its history is confusing is probably an understatement for most. In any case, Max will revert to HBO Max sometime in Summer 2025 (and hopefully, can keep it for a longer time). Prime Video's 'Fallout' Secures Early Season 3 Renewal Ahead Of Dec Premiere

Prime Video's Fallout series, based on the post-apocalyptic video game franchise by Bethesda Game Studios, has received an early season 3 renewal ahead of the premiere of its second season in December this year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Prime Video announced the renewal during its presentation on season two's premiere. 'We are absolutely thrilled that our global Prime Video customers will be able to delve deeper into the wonderfully surreal and captivating world of Fallout ,' Amazon MGM Studios' global head of television, Vernon Sanders, added in a statement. 'Together with our amazing partners at Bethesda Games and Bethesda Softworks, we are delighted to announce a third season of Fallout , well ahead of the much-anticipated debut of season two.' The continuation of the series should come as no surprise, with Fallout breaking Prime Video records upon its release, becoming the biggest US opening in Amazon's history by amassing over 65 million viewers and cementing its position as one of the streamers top three series to date. Series co-showrunner Robertson-Dworet had also stated in a separate interview that the show is hoping to introduce more elements from the game in its second season, explaining that 'there were so many things that [they] were not able to put in the show that [they] really desperately wanted that are either brilliant ideas for characters, creatures, set pieces', and that moving forward, the series would bring in new elements from the Fallout mythology. The series stars Ella Purnell ( Arcane ), Aaron Moten ( Emancipation ), Walton Goggins ( Justified ), and Kyle MacLachlan ( Twin Peaks ) as Lucy, Maximus, Cooper Howard / The Ghoul, and Hank MacLean, respectively, who will all return for the second season alongside newcomers like Kumail Nanjiani ( Eternals ) as 'a high-ranking official within the Brotherhood of Steel' and Macaulay Culkin ( Home Alone ) as 'a crazy genius-type character'. Fallout season two is set to premiere on Prime Video in December 2025. Kevin is a reformed PC Master Race gamer with a penchant for franchise 'duds' like Darksiders III and Dead Space 3 .
