Binggrae heir fined W5m for assaulting police officer
The Seoul Western District Court upheld the original verdict, handing Kim the same fine for obstructing law enforcement.
Kim, 42, is the eldest son of Binggrae Chair Kim Ho-yeon and the grandson of the late Kim Chong-hee, founder of Hanwha Group.
He was indicted for assaulting a police officer who was dispatched to the scene after a report was made to the 112 emergency line. The incident occurred in June last year at an apartment complex in Yongsan, central Seoul, where Kim caused a disturbance while intoxicated.
The lower court initially fined Kim 5 million won, citing the seriousness of assaulting a police officer on duty. However, it also acknowledged the officers' pleas for leniency. Prosecutors had appealed the ruling, arguing the punishment was too lenient, but the higher court dismissed the appeal.

A South Korean YouTuber who posted a video detailing what she said was an abortion at 36 weeks of pregnancy, and the doctors who performed it, have been indicted for murder. According to the prosecutors, the baby was allegedly born alive through a C-section and later placed in a freezer. "We will do our utmost to ensure that all profits obtained through this crime are fully confiscated, to send a strong message against such inhumane acts driven by financial gain and a disregard for life," the prosecutors said in a statement. The case came to public attention in June last year when Kwon uploaded the video saying she had received an abortion at 36 weeks, considered full-term under medical guidelines. Police found that the still alive when it was removed, and the hospital director and surgeon then allegedly placed the newborn under a surgical drape and put it into a freezer, where it died. Prosecutors said hospital staff attempted to conceal the incident by falsifying Kwon's medical records. They recorded symptoms such as abdominal pain and bleeding to make it look like a stillbirth. A false diagnosis was also issued. The investigation also uncovered a wider illegal abortion scheme. From August 2022 to July 2023, the hospital allegedly performed over 500 illegal abortions arranged through brokers, earning nearly 1.5 billion won ($1.09 million) in total. Abortion remains in a legal gray area in South Korea. In April 2019, the Constitutional Court ruled the country's criminalization of all abortions unconstitutional. However, the National Assembly has yet to enact a new law governing abortions to legalize it.

Police forming team to prevent abuse against families of tragedy victims: report
The South Korean police are forming a task force to prevent secondary victimization of people whose family members have died in disasters, in response to President Lee Jae Myung's directive. According to the Yonhap News Agency on Thursday, the National Police Agency has started recruitment of officers for the unit, tentatively named "investigative team against secondary victimization." The team will be headed by two superintendent-level officers — mid-level management position usually in charge of department at police stations. The National Office of Investigation will evaluate the applicants and, if none is deemed fit to carry out the role, will commandeer officers with sufficient experience in investigation and planning. Last Wednesday, Lee invited 200 family members of victims of tragedies with mass casualties, including the Jeju Air crash last year, an underground tunnel flooding in 2023, the deadly crowd crush in Itaewon, Seoul in 2022, and the sinking of ferry Sewol in 2014. He issued an official apology as the president, and pledged to form an investigative team to prevent secondary damage for bereaved families and survivors. The presidential office said last Thursday that Lee has ordered officials to compose a joint team of police and prosecutors to closely probe the Itaewon tragedy, while instructing a permanent team to prevent abuse of the victims' families.

Woman suspected of neglecting disabled brother, leading to death
A South Korean woman accused of letting her intellectually disabled and injured brother die through years of neglect is facing punishment, as the prosecution sought a seven-year prison term. Prosecutors in Daegu requested the Daegu District Court to convict the 47-year-old defendant on charges including death caused by neglect. It is alleged that she and her husband, who lived with the victim since 2011, willfully let her older brother die in 2015. The victim had suffered serious injuries from at least seven accidents between 2013 and 2014 that all occurred inside their home. Despite the hospital warning his conditions were severe, the couple repeatedly brought him home, rather than pursuing further medical care. It was found that the husband had multiple life insurance policies under the victim's name, with the couple named as the beneficiaries. The prosecution argues that the victim's conditions and the defendants' repeated failure to seek proper care, plus financial motive from the insurance, support their conclusion that they deliberately neglected the victim. The couple was indicted together in 2015, but the trial is ongoing only for the female defendant as the husband fled while out on bail in 2017. The court is expected to deliver its verdict in October, separately for the female defendant, while the trial for the husband remains stalled. The female defendant has denied the charges, claiming that she knew nothing of what happened between her husband and her brother.
