Spain beat France 5-4 in thriller to reach Nations League final

Dubai Eye06-06-2025
Spain's teenage sensation Lamine Yamal inspired his country to a thrilling 5-4 win over France on Thursday to send the holders through to the Nations League final where they will face Portugal.
The European champions dazzled in the first half of the semi-final at the MHP Arena and raced into a 2-0 lead with fine goals by Nico Williams and Mikel Merino inside 25 minutes.
Seventeen-year-old starlet Yamal then got in on the act to coolly add a third from the penalty spot nine minutes into the second half before his Barcelona teammate Pedri clipped a sublime fourth into the net less than a minute later.
The goals continued to flow as France striker Kylian Mbappe also slotted home from the penalty spot near the hour mark before Yamal added Spain's fifth after 67 minutes to cap an exhilarating individual performance.
France then mounted an extraordinary comeback as a stunning strike from Rayan Cherki, Dani Vivian's own goal and a Randal Kolo Muani finish caused Spain some late jitters but they held on to book a clash with their Portuguese rivals on Sunday.
"I always say it to my mother, I try to give it all," Yamal told Teledeporte. "It is what motivates me to play football, why I wake up in the mornings.
"France have world class players. The scoreline after 60 minutes was very big, but they have players who make you suffer.
"We (Spain and Portugal) are two very good teams with world-class players. The best will win. I hope to bring the cup to Spain."
Spain have been nearly imperious under coach Luis de la Fuente, losing just once in over two years, a run that helped them take home the European Championship title last year with victory over England in the final.
Key to De la Fuente's system is his lively wide men Nico Williams and Yamal, and after Mbappe had wasted a golden early chance in Stuttgart and Theo Hernandez crashed an effort against the crossbar, Williams' emphatic finish edged Spain in front.
Another fine, flowing move three minutes later resulted in Merino slotting home the second having been picked out by a pinpoint Mikel Oyarzabal pass. It was only the second time France had conceded twice inside the opening half hour of a match during coach Didier Deschamps' 13-year tenure.
France continued to create openings but could not make their moments count, with their profligacy proving costly as one of the favourites to win the Ballon d'Or award, Yamal, fired in from the penalty spot after the teenager had been fouled.
Yamal, who already has over 100 appearances for Barcelona across all competitions before he has even turned 18, was equally calm for his second, after Pedro's fine fourth and Mbappe's penalty, poking the ball past France goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
The strike from Olympique Lyonnais' Cherki deserved to be more meaningful, before Vivian's intervention gave Spanish supporters some cause for concern.
Substitute Kolo Muani's goal made extra time look a possibility, but it was too little, too late.
The striker, however, ensured the enthralling semi-final became the first-ever Nations League match to feature nine goals. It was also the first time France had conceded five times in a match since 1969.
"We had some bursts of play we haven't had for a long time," France skipper Mbappe said. "But in just 10 minutes of the first half, we conceded two goals -- and the same thing happened in the second half.
"We weren't consistent throughout the 90 minutes, but we did improve. When you don't win, there are always negative points that come out. But it's not all negative."

Man United are in 'no man's land' due to constant managerial churn, says Rashford

Manchester United's exiled forward Marcus Rashford has delivered a scathing assessment of the Premier League side's struggles, saying the club remains stuck in "no man's land" due to constantly changing coaches with different philosophies. Rashford has not played for United since December after a fallout with coach Ruben Amorim, with the England international spending the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa before joining Barcelona on another loan deal last month. The 27-year-old, once the lynchpin of United's attack, said the last few months away from the Old Trafford side have allowed him to "take a step back" and analyse why the club which finished a lowly 15th last season has been floundering. "People say that we've been in a transition for years but to be in a transition you have to start the transition. The actual transition hasn't started yet," Rashford said on 'The Rest is Football' podcast. "When Liverpool went through this, they got (Juergen) Klopp and they stuck with him. They didn't win in the beginning, people only remember his final few years when he was competing with (Manchester) City and winning the biggest trophies. "To start a transition, you have to make a plan and stick to it. This is where I speak about being realistic about what your situation is. We've had that many different managers, ideas and strategies in order to win that you end up in no man's land." United have not won the Premier League title since 2012-13, the last season of manager Alex Ferguson's career before he retired, while Liverpool have now equalled their tally of 20 league titles. United's managerial carousel since Ferguson's exit has included David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag, with each bringing vastly different playing styles. "When Ferguson was in charge, not only were there principles for the first team but they were for the whole academy," Rashford said. "They'd all understand the principles of playing the Man United way. Any team that's been successful over a period of time, they have principles that mean that any coach or player that comes in has to align to or add to the principles." United have won several cups since their last league title, but Rashford attributed them to squad quality rather than systematic success. "At times, I feel like United were hungry to win so we'll always try to adapt and sign players that fit the system. But that was reactionary," Rashford added. "If your direction is always changing you can't expect to win the league. You might win some cup tournaments, but it's because you have a good coach, good players and match winners in your team."

Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez reveal engagement with giant oval diamond ring

Soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez have announced their engagement after dating for eight years. On Monday, Rodríguez, 31, posted an Instagram photo of a giant oval engagement ring with what appears to be the Portuguese soccer star's hand in the background. 'Yes I do. In this and in all my lives,' she wrote in a translated caption. The couple first revealed their relationship in 2017 after appearing together at the Best FIFA Football Awards in Zurich, Switzerland, before posting each other on social media for the first time later that year. In June 2017, they welcomed their first set of twins, Eva Maria and Mateo, 8, via surrogate, and then welcomed their daughter Alana, 7, in November 2017. Ronaldo also has a 15-year-old son, Cristiano Jr., from a previous relationship. Georgina Rodriguez shows off her giant oval diamond ring. A few years later, the model and the soccer player announced the death of their twin son, Ángel, in April 2022, as they revealed that their twin daughter, Bella, 3, had been born. Ronaldo and Rodríguez shared the news of their son's passing in a joint social media post at the time. 'It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce our baby boy has passed away. It is the greatest pain that any parents can feel,' they wrote. 'Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness.' The couple also took the opportunity to express their gratitude to the doctors, nurses and medical staff for 'all their expert care and support.' 'We are all devastated at this loss and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time,' they wrote. 'Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you.' Days later, Ronaldo took to Instagram to thank his peers for their support and revealed that his then-newborn daughter was out of the hospital. In his post, he also shared a photo of his family, which included his three other children. Rodríguez further reflected on that moment during season two of her Netflix series, I Am Georgina in 2023. 'Over 40 million people follow me, but no one knows how I really feel. This year, I had the best and the worst moment of my life in an instant,' she said in a teaser for the new season at the time. The clip went on to show a video of Rodríguez and Ronaldo holding their twin's sonogram, before showcasing photos of the couple holding their then-newborn twin daughter. Rodríguez then tearfully explained how the soccer star helped her overcome her grief and encouraged her to keep moving forward. 'Life is hard. Life goes on,' she said. 'Life goes on. I have reasons to move on and be strong. Cris really encouraged me to continue with my agenda. He said, 'Gio, get on with life. It'll do you good.'' The influencer expressed her gratitude for her loved ones, adding: 'My priority right now is my family and my children. I'm so happy and thankful.' The Independent

Real, Barca renew rivalry as new Spanish League season set to begin

Real Madrid are aiming to wrestle the Spanish League title back from champions Barcelona as the La Liga season begins on Friday. Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid were dismantled on a regular basis by rivals Barcelona last season, who triumphed in all four meetings between the sides as well as winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. The Italian departed, to be replaced by former Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso, who has work on his hands to help revive them despite a squad boasting numerous star names including Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior. Real were thrashed 4-0 by Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the Club World Cup semi-finals and they remain to be seen how playing in the competition will impact squad fatigue and preparation for the new season. Defenders Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen give Alonso more options than Ancelotti had last season, along with Dani Carvajal's return from a long-term knee injury. However Real could be short in midfield after Luka Modric's departure and with Jude Bellingham set to be out until October after shoulder surgery. Can Yamal maintain level?: Barcelona excelled in attack last season and much of that was down to skilful teenage star Lamine Yamal. The Spain international turned 18 in July and has already made over 100 appearances for the club, becoming the Catalans' key player going forward. If Flick's side are to defend their title and push on for more in the Champions League, as they prepare to return to their rebuilt Camp Nou stadium, the winger maintaining his world-class level is essential. Yamal took former Barca all-time great Lionel Messi's number 10 shirt in July and insists he is forging his own path at the club. After helping his country triumph at Euro 2024, Yamal will also have his eye on the 2026 World Cup next summer. If new arrival Marcus Rashford hits the ground running coach Hansi Flick may be able to give Yamal the occasional rest, moving Raphinha over to the right. Atletico reshuffle: After a poor end to the previous campaign and a surprise group stage Club World Cup elimination, Diego Simeone's Atletico took action this summer. They brought in playmaker Alex Baena from Villarreal and Real Betis' Johnny Cardoso to provide new midfield impetus, as well as several other new recruits. Long-time Atletico players Angel Correa, Rodrigo De Paul, Saul Niguez depart, among others. Despite the strength of their squad and Simeone's reputation as one of the best coaches in the world -- and the highest paid in Europe -- Atletico have won just three trophies in the last decade, La Liga in 2021 and both the Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup in 2018. Questions over whether Simeone has taken them as far as he can will quickly rear up if things start to go wrong. Cazorla's Oviedo Spanish midfield maestro Santi Cazorla penned a new one-year deal with Real Oviedo for their return to Spain's top flight after a 24-year absence. It is a miraculous finale for the 40-year-old -- a member of the Spain side that won the 2008 and 2012 Euro titles -- who came close to losing his right leg due to his ankle bone going soft when he was at Arsenal. Former Arsenal playmaker Cazorla had a key role in the team's rise to La Liga, when he re-joined them he initially offered to play for nothing but was obliged under the rules to accept the minimum wage, and in their first match they take on his former side Villarreal. Whether he will be able to have as much of an impact this season is debatable but Cazorla will get a fine send-off at grounds around the country when Oviedo hit the road. Fresh starts: Real Sociedad and Sevilla have made new managerial appointments as they try to bounce back from poor 2024-25 campaigns. After seven years at the helm Real's Imanol Alguacil stepped down and has been replaced by reserve team coach Sergio Francisco. Meanwhile Matias Almeyda takes over at a Sevilla side which finished 17th last season and sacked coach Francesco Garcia Pimienta in April. Both clubs have been among the strongest in Spain over the past decade but have fallen from grace. Agence France-Presse
