2025 Humanitas Prize nominations: ‘The Pitt,' ‘The Studio,' and ‘The Last of Us' among those honored for exceptional storytelling

The 2025 Humanitas Prize nominations have been announced, once again honoring television and film writers who masterfully explore the depth of the human experience. This year's awards will be presented at a Sept. 7 ceremony in Hollywood hosted by actress and comedian Fortune Feimster (Fubar, Zootopia 2). On the TV side, drama nominees include Emmy contenders The Pitt, The Last of Us, The Handmaid's Tale, and Brilliant Minds. Comedy contenders include The Studio, The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh, A Man on the Inside, and Clean Slate. Limited series being honored include Dying for Sex, Interior Chinatown, Lockerbie: A Search for Truth, and Say Nothing. Inside Out 2, Out of My Mind, and The Wild Robot are nominated for Best Family Feature. Beyond the competition, the evening will spotlight visionary writers with one of the event's highest honors: the Voice for Change Award. This year's recipient is Emmy winner Lena Waithe, who will be presented the award by acclaimed filmmakers Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King) and Mara Brock Akil (Forever). Waithe was chosen as this year's recipient because it 'honors those who have created or championed visionary and courageous storytelling,' the Humanitas organization shared in their announcement. The Humanitas, which has handed out over 450 prizes since its founding in 1974, continues its mission to 'honor and empower writers of film and television exploring the human experience." ''This year's group of nominees is an inspiring group with an admirable oeuvre, and we're eager to gather with them in September to celebrate,' said executive director Michelle Franke. In a historic move for the awards, this year debuts two separate categories for documentaries: one for feature documentaries and another for episodes in docuseries. Overall, the 2025 Humanitas Prizes will honor writers across 10 competitive categories, including Drama Teleplay, Comedy Teleplay, Limited Series Teleplay, Children's Teleplay, and three feature film categories (Drama, Comedy, and Family). The event will also celebrate the next generation of storytellers through the New Voices Fellowship, a six-month mentorship program designed to connect early-career writers with industry leaders. High honors will also be presented through the David and Lynn Angell College Comedy Award and the Carol Mendelsohn College Drama Award, both of which include a $20,000 prize, mentorship opportunities, and professional feedback sessions. Additionally, the Starz #TakeTheLead award will return this year, celebrating a writer who has emerged from either the Humanitas Fellowship or College Screenwriting Award programs and who has demonstrated a commitment to improving representation in their storytelling. Here's when the 2025 Daytime Emmy nominations will be announced: Plus, see the new and eliminated categories

The Daytime Emmys are celebrating their 52nd anniversary this year with a slew of changes, including unique dates for the nominations announcement and awards ceremony, and several new and eliminated categories. As usual, these kudos are voted on by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS), the same organization that oversees the Sports Emmys, News & Documentary Emmys, and Children's & Family Emmys. The eligibility window is the 2024 calendar year. The 2025 Daytime Emmy nominations will be announced in two parts. On the evening of Wednesday, July 9, the first eight categories will be unveiled: Best Drama Series, Best Drama Actress, Best Drama Actor, Best Culinary Instructional Series, Best Talk Series, Best Travel and Adventure Program, Best Instructional and How-To Program, and Best Lifestyle Program. Then on Thursday, July 10 at 9 a.m. PT / 12 p.m. ET, the rest of the races will be announced. Stay with Gold Derby as we'll have the complete list of nominations and analysis. Typically, the Daytime noms are unveiled in April or May, but this year the timeline was swapped with the News & Documentary Emmy Awards. More from Gold Derby Why buzzy new soap 'Beyond the Gates' isn't eligible at the 2025 Daytime Emmys, how the number of contenders is determined, and more burning questions answered Everything to know about 'Wednesday' Season 2 as trailer drops: New mysteries, returning cast, and big surprises This year's trophies will be handed out Oct. 17 in Pasadena, Calif., approximately four months later than usual. NATAS has yet to announce a specific venue or host for the 2025 Daytime Emmys ceremony. Stay tuned. A brand new race in 2025 is Best Emerging Talent in a Daytime Drama Series (see criteria below). In addition, the Best Culinary Series contest is being divided into Best Culinary Instructional Series and Best Culinary Cultural Series. And the Best Travel, Nature, and Adventure category is being split into Best Travel and Adventure Program and Best Nature and Science Program. Here is the specific eligibility requirements for the Best Emerging Talent race: There is no age restriction for this category Performer has been on the Daytime Drama Program for two years or less, thereby limiting category eligibility for two years total per performer Performer is on their first Daytime contract Performer has no previous Daytime Emmy acting nominations Performer has never won this category - previous winners will be allowed to henceforth enter Guest, Supporting, or Lead as applicable Performer must be onscreen in a speaking role with at least one multi-episode story arc As of 2025, Best Original Song has been eliminated as a category at the Daytime Emmys; no reason was given, but it's suspected that it's because of the dwindling number of submissions. Additionally, the Best Educational and Informational Program race has been cut, and that programming is now eligible within the culinary/travel & adventure/nature & science categories, or at the Children's & Family Emmys or the News & Documentary Emmys. Nowadays, with so many programs debuting on streaming and available to view at the viewers' leisure, NATAS has specifically defined what constitutes entry at the Daytime Emmys vs. Primetime Emmys vs. Children's & Family Emmys. First things first, Daytime does not accept any fictional programming, outside of Daytime Dramas (i.e., soap operas), or any mature content rated TV-MA. The following genres are allowed to compete at the Daytime Emmys: Daytime Dramas, Culinary Instructional, Culinary Cultural, Daytime Talk Series, Lifestyle, Arts and Popular Culture, Travel/Adventure, Nature/Science, Legal/Courtroom, Entertainment News, Daytime Non-Fiction Special, Daytime Non-Fiction Short Form, Instructional/How-To, Animal Shows, Parades Comparatively, the following types of programs fall under the purview of the Primetime Emmys: Drama, Comedy, Dramedy, TV Movie, Miniseries, Anthology, Competition Reality (except with children contestants), Variety, Primetime Talk Show, Horror, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Musical, Adult Animation, Game Shows, Awards Shows, Paranormal, Relationship, True Crime And the following categories are eligible for inclusion at the Children's & Family Emmys: Children's, Family Viewing, Young Teen, Preschool, Preschool Animation, Children's Animation, Young Teen Animation, Children's Non-Fiction, Reality Competition with Children Contestants, Educational/Informational While some awards organizations have started combining male and female contenders into a single category, the Daytime Emmys are sticking with traditional male and female contests. "Performers eligible in gendered acting categories are encouraged to enter the one that best fits their gender identity," says NATAS. "The Daytime Emmys will honor the category all eligible performers select to best represent themselves. Winners and nominees in gendered acting categories can request 'Actor' or 'Actress' be removed from their band engraving or nomination certificate." These are the six acting awards that will be announced on July 10: Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series, Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series, Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, Best Guest Performer in a Drama Series, and Best Emerging Talent in a Daytime Drama. Why It's Finally Time to Embrace Prebuilt Gaming PCs

Pre-built PCs now use name-brand components and have shifted away from low-quality parts to a higher standard. Upgrading a pre-built system is easy, since you can add storage or swap out the RAM or GPU. Pre-built PCs come with better warranties for all original components compared to custom-built systems. Are you looking at buying a pre-built gaming PC, but leery because of the reputation of pre-built systems? While the past they may not have been worth buying, modern pre-built gaming PCs are actually a great choice for your setup—here's why. In the past, I had always told people to avoid pre-built gaming PCs. They were known for using low-quality and cheap parts to save a buck while charging a premium for being 'built for gaming.' When I used to work in PC repair, I can't tell you how many no-name low-cost power supplies I replaced, nor can I even begin to remember how many junky motherboards blew caps after just a year or two of use. This alone was enough to avoid going pre-built—but that's all changed now. A shift in recent years has changed the landscape of pre-built gaming PCs. For a while, you couldn't get graphics cards (or any PC components, for that matter) unless you bought a pre-built system because of scalpers. Companies actually saw this and did something good for a change: built better systems. Yes, pre-built PC prices did go up some, but so did the quality of the systems. Instead of no-name bargain-barrel power supplies, many mid-range gaming PCs now ship with name-brand PSUs. The same can be said for SSDs, graphics cards, motherboards, and RAM. Another thing that happened was a lot of component manufacturers got into the pre-built gaming space. Yes, there are still brands like ORIGIN-PC and MAINGEAR out there, but CORSAIR, NZXT, MSI, and others now have pre-built gaming desktops that are pretty great, all things considered. Rather than skimping out, many companies are now using name-brand and quality components, and everyone benefits from this. Of course, there are still bargain-bin PCs out there that use no-name components, but that's becoming the exception, not the rule. Something you might not realize is that pre-built PCs can be upgraded just like custom-built systems. A custom-built PC and pre-built PC is all built from the same parts—the only thing that changes is who is building it. This means you can swap out the RAM, SSD, graphics card, power supply, or even processor without a problem. While the new components won't be covered under the pre-built PC company's warranty (more on that below), you'll have an upgraded system. One of the biggest ways you can upgrade a pre-built system is by adding more storage. Since many companies are using name-brand and premium motherboards, there are typically a handful of NVMe slots on modern systems, with only one being used up in a typical build from the factory. Another way is by adding more or swapping out RAM entirely. Both the NVMe upgrade and RAM upgrade can add big benefits to your system while being easy and cost-effective to do. However, the biggest thing you can swap out in a pre-built system is also (typically) the biggest component—the graphics card. Yes, in a pre-built system you can definitely swap the GPU out, so long as the power supply can keep up. If the PSU is too underpowered for the new GPU you plan to add? Just upgrade the PSU at the same time. The warranty of a pre-built gaming PC is actually better than that of a custom-built—sort of. Pre-built systems are warrantied top to bottom for the original components that it ships with. Depending on what brand you go with, a warranty claim could result in either a full system swap or a single component swap. Either way, however, the brand will likely offer full system diagnostics to help determine what the issue is. Custom-building your own PC isn't quite so user-friendly in that regard. I have a friend who re-built his gaming PC recently and did a custom build. He just spent almost two weeks diagnosing what the issue was so he could RMA the defective parts. To diagnose the issue, he had to purchase new components to test things one-by-one in order to find out what was broken. This wouldn't have been the case had he went pre-built. So, if you're not super savvy on PC building (or you just want to take the easy way out), there's nothing wrong with buying a pre-built gaming PC these days. While the gaming community might see that as a lesser system, know that it's not lesser in any way. Pre-built gaming PCs are great options these days, and still remain one of the few ways to get brand-new graphics cards on release with any relative ease.
