But Live at the Ironwood is the Fox Big Band's first recording in its 40-year history, nicely documenting a piece of Calgary history that is often overlooked. With acts such a Fox Big Band, the 9th Avenue Big Band (formerly the Prime Time Big Band) and the Calgary Jazz Orchestra, the city has been a mecca for big-band acts for years. Both 9th Avenue Big Band and Fox Big Band do monthly shows at the Ironwood Stage and Grill and they often sell out the venue. Fox Big Band will hold an album release on July 5 wiht Benny Benack III and Angela Wrigley.

'Big band music is a blast to play,' Morin says. 'You don't get to do it every day, because it's expensive. Because of of our focus on big bands in our school curriculums, in high schools and junior highs; because of the (Calgary Stampede Show Band( band and the Round-Up Band, there is such a penchant for instrumental performers and big-band lovers in this city unlike any other city that I've ever seen per capita. To be able to sellout the Ironwood, which is about 140 people, and to do that almost every weekend with big-band lovers who are not just (older fans), they are all ages, it's not like that in Toronto. I live in Toronto for 15 years and I'd go see some of the best big bands in the world. I'd see Rob McConnell's big band, arguably one of the best Canadian big bands of all time, and there would be 20 people there. So there is something about Calgary when it comes to big band music and we are just taking advantage of that.'

Full steam ahead for Toronto Tempo as WNBA team readies for inaugural season
With the 2025 WNBA season well underway, the debut of the Toronto Tempo is fast approaching and the month ahead promises to be a busy time for team president Teresa Resch. She recently hired the team's first general manager, Monica Wright Rogers, a move which will take some of the spotlight off of Resch, who has pretty much been the face of the franchise since MLSE chair Larry Tannenbaum was first awarded the franchise in May of 2024. 'When I got this job, I didn't realize I'd be getting to talk to so many people like yourself, journalists telling the story of the team, because I'd worked for the Raptors for 10 seasons, and it was always the players and the coach and even our GM who was telling the story about the Raptors,' Resch told Global News' Eric Sorensen. But team meetings remain pretty small for the Tempo as they still need to hire a coach and fill out the roster. Story continues below advertisement 'We'll have a coach probably at the end of the W' season in the fall, in October, November,' Resch offered. 'And then we'll have players starting in the wintertime. So we'll an expansion draft likely in December, January. We'll have free agency in January, and we'll (have) a college draft in April. So then those people will really be truly telling the Tempo story.' While the roster remains unfilled, a few famous female faces with wildly different backgrounds have bought into the team, including Serena Williams, Lilly Singh and Sukhinder Singh Cassidy. The FIFA World Cup tournament is about a year away, and despite Canada being a prohibitive underdog, the prime minister is hoping that we can still win it on home soil. 'May Jonathan David (Canada men's team captain) be the first Canadian to touch the trophy,' Mark Carney said Tuesday when he welcomed the 2026 World Cup trophy at the Canada Day celebrations at LeBreton Flats. Article content Article content Canada is hosting the tournament along with the U.S. and Mexico, and Carney's comments seemed like a hope and prayer, but the crowd roared in approval. Hope springs eternal. Article content Article content The trophy itself was in Ottawa as part of FIFA's World Cup tour to whip up interest and build excitement. Soccer fever was indeed high, as hundreds of fans lined up on Sparks Street to get a glimpse of the trophy and take selfies. An Ottawa man who gave his first name as Haein, brought along his three soccer-loving sons who hope to play for Canada one day. 'They love soccer and one day, hope to hoist the trophy,' he said. Article content Some in Ottawa wondered whether the cup on display was the real one or a replica. They had good reason to ask: In 2006 for instance, the cup on tour was widely reported to be the real one, until news came out that it was a replica. Article content FIFA has used two World Cups in its history. The first was the Jules Rimet Trophy, which Brazil won permanently in 1970. The second and current one, is an 18-karat gold trophy commissioned for the 1974 tournament. It is closely guarded in Switzerland. The reason is that the Jules Rimet trophy has been stolen twice — once in London, just before the 1966 World Cup — but was recovered days later. When it was awarded to Brazil in 1970 for winning it three times, it was again stolen in 1983, and never found. After victory celebrations, the trophy returns to FIFA. Teams get a gold-plated replica. Article content The 2026 tournament has been expanded from 32 to 48 teams. Qualifying games are still being played to determine the 45 countries that will join hosts Canada, U.S. and Mexico to bring the final number of participants to 48. (Host nations get automatic qualification.) The 48 teams will play 104 games in all, leading to the grand finale at the 82,500-seat MetLife Stadium in New Rutherford, New Jersey, where a new world champion will be crowned. Interestingly, FIFA's marketing campaign lists 'New York New Jersey' as the city staging the final. It is confusing, but FIFA obviously wants a New York shine on the Word Cup, and who can blame them?

Canadian men's soccer team to host Australia in Montreal for October friendly
MONTREAL – The Canadian men's national soccer team will host Australia in its first match in Montreal since 2017 on Oct. 10 at Stade Saputo. Canada Soccer announced the opponent Thursday for the international friendly in the lead-up to the 2026 World Cup. No. 30 Canada finished fourth at last summer's Copa America but dropped out of the CONCACAF Gold Cup with a quarterfinal loss to Guatemala last Sunday. The men's national team holds a 3-1-5 record against Australia, which currently stands 26th in the FIFA rankings. The Socceroos qualified for the 2026 World Cup — co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States — with a 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia in June. The Canadian men will also face No. 14 Colombia in an Oct. 14 friendly at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, N.J. Last time out in Montreal, Canada defeated Curaçao 2-1 in June 2017. Current captain Alphonso Davies made his international debut in the match. 'We're excited to be playing another high-quality match on home soil with our first game in Montreal since 2017,' Canada coach Jesse Marsch said in a statement. 'Connecting the people's team with the Canadian community is one of our main priorities as we build excitement ahead of our home FIFA World Cup in 2026.
