Bagan Serai: The government has allocated RM7 million for infrastructure upgrades to minimise drought impact on key rice production areas of Malaysia. Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup said the focus will be on irrigation systems, the primary water source for crops. 'It is mainly to ensure that the water channels are functioning and can deliver water to the paddy plots, even if the water volume is slightly lower than usual. 'This is also one of our ways to minimise the potential negative effects on farmers' income, especially during drought seasons,' he said after officiating the 2025 Perak State-Level Agricultural Machinery and Equipment handover ceremony at Dewan Dato' Zainal Abidin Zin, here, today. Yesterday, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued a statement, indicating that six areas in Peninsular Malaysia are now at Level 1 (alert) for three consecutive days, due to ongoing hot weather. The affected areas include Larut and Matang, Kuala Kangsar, and Perak Tengah in Perak, Machang and Kuala Krai in Kelantan, and Bandar Baharu in Kedah. In a separate matter, Arthur said that his ministry will strengthen collaboration with relevant enforcement agencies to combat cattle smuggling activities from Thailand, which are believed to threaten the country's food security. He said enforcement actions against individuals involved in unethical activities are under the jurisdiction of the respective state governments. 'Therefore, a comprehensive engagement session between state and federal governments is essential, to harmonise laws and prevent conflicts which could undermine the nation's food biosecurity,' he said. Sabah rep slams minister's explanation of RM31 billion steel project delay

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: A Warisan assemblyman has slammed Sabah industrial development minister Phoong Jin Zhe's explanation of the delays in the RM31 billion Esteel Enterprise steel project, calling it 'misleading and irresponsible'. Elopura assemblyman Calvin Chong also asked how such a major project could be announced in November 2022 without confirmed approvals, especially given the federal moratorium on manufacturing licences for the steel industry at the time. 'Phoong's statement that the project timeline was based on assumptions is baffling and irresponsible,' he said in a statement today. 'Does Phoong truly understand the scale and implications of a RM31 billion investment? This is not just the largest in Sabah's history. It is the largest in Malaysia since independence.' Chong called on the state government to disclose all agreements and terms involving Esteel Enterprise, saying the public deserved full transparency on a project of such scale. 'I support the investment if it can be verified in terms of implementation and financial capability. But all agreements between the government and the investors must be made public in a fair and transparent manner,' he said. He also questioned the delay in implementation, noting that the manufacturing licence was only approved in January 2025, more than two years after the project was announced. 'What happened to the thousands of job opportunities promised in November 2022?' he asked. On Monday, Phoong said the delay in the RM31 billion steel project was due to setbacks in obtaining the necessary approvals and securing a supply of natural gas. He said the initial projection for Esteel Enterprise's factory to begin operations in the fourth quarter of this year was based on the assumption that approvals would be obtained without delay. However, he said Putrajaya's two-year moratorium on manufacturing licences for steel-related industries created complications, with special approval only granted on Jan 24, 2025. Historic moment for Sabah workers: Union

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Hotel, Resort & Restaurant Employees Union (SHRREU) hailed the official working visit by Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong as a historic moment for workers in the State. SHRREU Secretary-General Mohd Shahbudin Abdullah said this marks the first time a Federal Human Resources Minister visited SHRREU's office, a gesture the union described as meaningful and long overdue. 'For decades, no minister has come down to meet with workers in Sabah. Steven's visit shows real commitment to hearing our voices,' he said, recently. During the visit, the union thanked the Minister for delivering on a key promise, the enforcement of the Sabah Labour Ordinance (Amendment) 2025, which was gazetted on May 1 after years of delay. He also emphasised that the amendment brings much-needed updates to labour protections in Sabah, aligning them more closely with standards in Peninsular Malaysia. 'We waited since 2022 for this amendment. Thanks to the Minister's strong leadership, it's now a reality,' Shahbudin said. SHRREU also welcomed the introduction of the Madani's Card Worker, a discount card for union members that offers savings of up to 30 per cent to help with the cost of living. The union urged the ministry to include more Sabah-based vendors to ensure workers in the State can benefit fully. 'We appreciate the initiative, but hope more local partners can be added so Sabah workers aren't left behind,' he said. The union also raised concerns over salary disparities, noting that long-serving workers often receive the same pay as new hires — an issue that has created long-standing dissatisfaction. They urged the ministry to review the policy and offer fairer wage structures. Additionally, SHRREU expressed gratitude for being appointed to the Sabah Labour Advisory Council (SLAC), describing it as a meaningful recognition of the union's role in representing workers' interests.
