A popular manga predicted catastrophe — and Japanese tourism took a hit
SEOUL — A Japanese comic book's premonition of an impending natural disaster in Japan has gotten some tourists so wigged out that they are avoiding the country this summer, prompting government officials to try to dispel rampant rumors about the prophecy.
The recent decline in sales of flights from some key Asian tourist markets to Japan have been attributed to a manga by Ryo Tatsuki: 'The Future I Saw.'

This Is The Most Expensive Tourist City in the U.S.—and It's a Year-round Destination
A new analysis named Aspen, Colorado, the most expensive tourist destination in the U.S. Keep reading to learn what other spots made the you're on a budget, it is always good to know where the cheapest beaches, hotels, and flights can be found. For those looking to save money—or inversely, those wanting to spend it—it can also be helpful to know where the most expensive destinations are. A new study from GOBankingRates revealed five most expensive U.S. tourist destinations, proving that you don't need to leave the country in order to put a lot of pressure on your wallet. To determine which cities were the priciest, GOBankingRates analyzed 91 of the top U.S. destinations, as determined by Travel + Leisure reporting, and narrowed it down to 55 cities. Then, using census data, Numbeo's cost of living tool, they determined how much it would cost for two adults to visit the location for three nights, eating meals at a mixture of mid-range and inexpensive restaurants, and how much it costs for domestic beer. Average hotel and flight prices were also factored in. For avid skiers, it might not be surprising that Aspen, Colorado, is the nation's most expensive destination. Known for its ski resorts, Aspen is expensive year-round. (The city has world-class skiing in winter and scenic hiking and biking trails in summer. There are fewer crowds in the spring and falls, plus vibrant foliage and a robust roster of cultural events.) According to the study, Aspen will cost two people $2,708 for three days. Given how much there is to do there and how beautiful it is, it isn't a waste of money—but you'll certainly be spending a lot of it. Airfare will be the costliest part of the trip, at more than $1,300 on average while hotels cost around $791 for a three-night stay and meals would end up around $510. The study also helped determine which state had the most affordable destination; Florida cities average $1,630, making it slightly more affordable than the second most affordable state, California. The cheapest place to buy a beer? Branson, Missouri, where it costs $3.50 on average. Epic Universe: An epic impact
While Epic Universe has already spurred increased business for travel agencies, they are far from the only ones benefitting: Throughout its construction, the park has produced economic impact to the tune of billions of dollars throughout the country, and it is expected to generate billions more now that it is fully operational. Much of that is in central Florida. 'When a major new park debuts, the entire region benefits,' said Casandra Matej, CEO of Visit Orlando. 'Visitors don't just go to one park — they stay in our hotels and resorts, dine in local restaurants, shop in our stores and explore our diverse attractions. It's truly a rising-tide-lifts-all-boats scenario, from global brands to our small businesses.' Universal Destinations & Experiences engaged economist Sean Snaith, director of the University of Central Florida's (UCF) Institute for Economic Forecasting, to perform an analysis of Epic's impact locally and nationally. The report found that Epic's five-year economic impact from 2019 to 2023 totaled $44 billion and that the construction of the park generated 65,000 jobs across the country. Further, in its first year of operation, Epic is expected to generate an economic impact of $2 billion in Florida. Visit Orlando's Matej called Epic's opening a 'landmark moment' for the region, the most visited in the U.S. with 75.3 million visitors in 2024. Stays this year are already trending positively: From April to June, hotel bookings were pacing 2.5% ahead of the same period last year, according to Matej. Short-term rental bookings were up 16%. 'For more than five decades, theme parks have played a key role in transforming Orlando from citrus groves into a global tourism destination — driving growth, expanding infrastructure and boosting the local economy,' she said. Jorge Ridderstaat, associate professor of finance, accounting and econometrics at UCF's Rosen College, said the park's overall economic impact expanded well beyond Florida in its planning and construction phase. Going forward, it will be felt more in Florida and the Orlando area, he said, with an estimated $1 billion in additional tax revenue and nearly 18,000 direct employees. 'The direct and indirect economic impacts are major.' Jorge Ridderstaat, UCF 'There's also an indirect effect, and that's coming from additional restaurants, hotels; and you can even think about banking activities,' Ridderstaat said. 'The direct and indirect impacts are major here.' Universal's other projects under development may be smaller in scale than Epic but will provide significant economic benefits. Universal Horror Unleashed, a year-round attraction in Las Vegas, will open this year; the Universal Kids Resort is slated to open in Texas in 2026; and Universal's first theme park in England is set to debut in 2031. Ridderstaat said the new parks would impact local and national economies as well as motivate other operators to compete. 'Because these technologies being used are very sophisticated, that gives a run on Disney to increase the quality of their product,' he said. 'Because otherwise, you don't catch these types of people who are interested in innovative types of products. I think that's a challenge for the competition.'

GOBankingRates found 91 cities considered the top vacation destinations sourced from TripAdvisor's Top Destinations, Travel+Leisure's 2024 Top US Cities, and U.S. News & World Report's Best Cities in the U.S. Fifty-five cities qualified for this study as each city had to have data available from the U.S. Census American Community Survey and Numbeo's Cost of Living. For this study, GOBankingRates is assuming the vacationers are two adults visiting for three nights. They have three meals at a mid-range restaurant, 12 meals at inexpensive restaurants, six beers and six sodas. For each city, GOBankingRates found the average airfare cost from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the average cost of hotels from and the average cost of goods from Numbeo. The airfare was selected using the nearest airport from the vacation destination. The hotels were selected using the average cost of the three cheapest hotels within five miles of each city. The weekend dates of Aug. 7-10, 2025, were selected. All data was collected on and is up to date as of June 4, 2025.
