'Thudarum' Box Office Collection Day 8: Mohanlal starrer inches closer to Rs 60 crore in India
Mohanlal's latest thriller 'Thudarum' continues to impress at the box office, maintaining strong momentum as it enters its second week.
According to trade analyst Sacnilk, the film earned an estimated Rs 5.50 crore net across all languages on its eighth day, bringing the total India net collection to around Rs 56.90 crore. Over its first week, Thudarum amassed Rs 51.4 crore, with daily collections showing steady performance despite typical weekday drops. The Malayalam version dominates the earnings, contributing over Rs 50 crore, while the Telugu-dubbed version adds a small but consistent share.
On Friday, May 2, Thudarum recorded an impressive overall Malayalam occupancy of 61.37%. Morning shows began with a modest 37.23% occupancy, which rose significantly to nearly 60% in the afternoon. Evening shows attracted over 71% of the audience, while night shows peaked at a remarkable 77.21%, reflecting strong viewer interest and positive word-of-mouth in Kerala and among Malayalam-speaking audiences.
Directed by Tharun Moorthy, 'Thudarum' is a gripping action-comedy drama that stars Mohanlal in a commanding lead role. The film also features veteran actors Shobana, Maniyanpilla Raju, Binu Pappu, and
Irshad Ali
in key roles. The story blends intense action sequences with emotional drama.
The film's success is notable for its strong hold during weekdays and its ability to attract audiences consistently across major Malayalam-speaking regions such as Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, and Thrissur. Even in metros outside Kerala, like Chennai and Bengaluru, 'Thudarum' has garnered respectable occupancy rates.
The story is set in the peaceful hill town of Ranni and revolves around Shanmugham, affectionately known as Benz, a humble taxi driver deeply attached to his vintage black Ambassador car. Benz leads a simple, content life with his wife Lalitha and their two children, though his son Pavi is embarrassed by his father's old-fashioned ways.
'Thudarum' has also crossed the Rs 100 crore mark worldwide within six days, combining domestic and overseas collections, making it one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of 2025.

Housefull 5 box office collection day 5: Akshay Kumar's whodunit comedy beats Gold, Housefull 2 and 3; inches closer to surpassing Holiday, Sky Force
After struggling for years to score a hit, Akshay Kumar finally seems to be on the right path with Tarun Mansukhani's whodunit comedy Housefull 5, in which he leads an ensemble of 20 actors. Kumar's last success was Sky Force earlier this year, but Housefull 5 is likely to surpass its lifetime collection in a week. On Tuesday, Housefull 5 earned Rs 10.75 crore across both its A and B versions, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. This was a minor dip from its Monday earnings of Rs 13 crore. However, sustaining double digits after day 3 has allowed Housefull 5 to pass the crucial Monday test. Over its opening weekend, the film earned Rs 24 crore, Rs 31 crore, and Rs 32.5 crore on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, respectively. As per Sacnilk, the current box office collection of Housefull 5 in India stands at Rs 111.25 crore. In the process, it has beaten the lifetime domestic collection of Kumar's 2018 period sports drama Gold, directed by Reema Kagti, which concluded at Rs 104.72 crore. Housefull 5 has also crossed the collections of two previous instalments of the comedy franchise. Housefull 5 has beaten Sajid-Farhad's Housefull 3, which earned Rs 109.14 crore in 2016, as well as Sajid Khan's Housefull 2, which collected Rs 106 crore in 2012, and turned out to be Kumar's maiden Rs 100 crore hit. Since then, he has delivered 12 films which made it to the Rs 100 crore club — Housefull 2, Rowdy Rathore (2012), Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty (2014), Housefull 3, Rustom (2016), Toilet – Ek Prem Katha (2017), Gold, 2.0 (2018), Kesari (2019), Mission Mangal (2019), Housefull 4 (2019), and Good Newwz (Rs 205.14 crore), and now, Hosuefull 5. Given its current trajectory, Housefull 5 is most likely to beat the lifetime collection of Holiday (Rs 112.45 crore) and Sky Force (Rs 112.75 crore) today on its sixth day at the box office. Housefull 5 also seems to have benefitted from its two versions (A and B) that have been released in cinemas simultaneously. The ending and the killer are different in each version. Housefull 5, which enjoyed a solo Hindi release last week, has one more week to go before it faces fresh competition from RS Prasanna's coming-of-age sports comedy Sitaare Zameen Par, starring Aamir Khan. Produced by the actor, it's a spiritual sequel to his 2008 directorial debut Taare Zameen Par. Interestingly, that film also clashed with another Kumar blockbuster, Anees Bazmee's action comedy Singh Is Kinng. Sony moves Bombay HC to challenge TDSAT stay on Tata Play disconnection
Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) has moved the Bombay High Court to challenge a recent Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) order restraining SPNI from proceeding with a disconnection notice issued to direct-to-home (DTH) operator Tata Play . A division bench of the court comprising Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Neela Gokhale on Tuesday issued notices to TDSAT and Tata Play, directing them to file their responses. The matter has been posted for further hearing on Monday, June 16. SPNI, a Sony Group Corp-owned entity operating under the legal name Culver Max Entertainment, runs 27 television channels. It issued a disconnection notice to Tata Play, the country's largest DTH operator with 18 million subscribers, after the latter decided to remove its channels from consumer packs following disagreements over the renewal of their annual subscription deal. While staying SPNI's disconnection notice on May 27, TDSAT had directed Tata Play to pay Rs 40 crore to the broadcaster within two weeks as part-payment against SPNI's claimed dues of Rs 128 crore. The tribunal said this amount would be adjusted against the final liability determined during the final hearing. People familiar with the dispute between the two said SPNI is seeking a fee hike, which Tata Play has resisted citing declining viewership of its channels. TDSAT in its order noted that not granting the stay could result in irreparable harm to Tata Play. It directed both parties to reconcile their differences, including at the account level. In the High Court, senior counsel Janak Dwarkadas, along with Sneha Jaisingh of Bharucha & Partners, appeared for SPNI to challenge the TDSAT order. Senior counsel Ravi Kadam is representing Tata Play. In the TDSAT, Tata Play's counsel argued that the broadcaster's demand was unjustified, claiming the company had already paid about Rs 4,000 crore over the past decade, including Rs 700 crore annually. They further contended that substantial payments had been made since SPNI's initial communication in March 2025, which had sought dues of Rs 300 crore. Tata Play, jointly owned by Tata Sons (70%) and Walt Disney (30%), reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 510 crore for FY25, up 44% from Rs 354 crore the previous year. Revenue declined 5.46% to Rs 4,082 crore, driven by subscriber losses amid increased competition from DD Free Dish and the rising popularity of OTT platforms. SPNI reported a 19% year-on-year decline in consolidated net profit to Rs 839 crore for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2024. Revenue from operations fell 3% to Rs 6,510 crore, with advertising revenue declining 11% to Rs 2,912 crore, while subscription revenue rose 7% to Rs 3,346 crore. According to Ashish Pyasi, partner at law firm Aendri Legal, the TDSAT resolves conflicts between telecom and broadcast companies. Its rulings can only be challenged in the Supreme Court. There is no provision for challenging the interim orders to the Supreme Court. 'However, if someone files a writ petition in the High Court against a temporary TDSAT order, they are asking the High Court to use its special powers, which is only allowed in rare cases,' adds Pyasi.

ZEE5 aims to slash operating losses by up to 60% in FY26
Mumbai: ZEE5, the streaming platform owned by Zee Entertainment, aims to reduce its operating losses by 50-60% in FY26, president of digital businesses and platforms Amit Goenka OTT industry has shifted its focus to achieving profitability after years of heavy investments in subscriber acquisition, which had taken a toll on their P& FY25, ZEE5 reduced its Ebitda loss to ₹548 crore from ₹1,105 crore in the previous year. The company has been aggressively cutting costs to achieve its goal of an 18-20% Ebitda margin in FY26."This year, we are striving to reduce our Ebitda losses by more than 50-60% compared to last year. ZEE5 is the only division in Zee Entertainment that is not yet profitable, and we are looking to make it Ebitda-positive," he said. According to Goenka, producing content at a competitive price has been Zee's strength, and the company wants to maintain the cost advantages it has built over the years. ZEE5's focus on investing more in the story than in the star cast has helped it reduce costs-unlike other major streamers who spend huge amounts of money on star-driven shows, he noted. "We will control our costs and at the same time deliver quality content to audiences," he said. ZEE5 is planning to launch 100 content titles in FY26, with a focus on language-based offerings in markets like Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi and Bengali. In FY25, the platform launched 60 pieces of content across movies and originals. Goenka also downplayed concerns that stringent cost controls would impact revenue growth, even as the platform competes with giants like Netflix, Prime Video and JioHotstar. ZEE5's revenue grew by 6% in FY25 to ₹976 crore. "Controlling costs can still help you grow users and offer a great content experience because how you tell the story is more important than the face behind it," he said. While ZEE5 has a hybrid subscription and ad-led model, Goenka sees a lot of potential in the subscription model and intends to partner with telcos, broadband players and other distribution platforms to reach new audiences in tier-2 and -3 cities. The platform also aims to double down on technology to improve user experience and experiment with emerging genres like short-form vertical video.
