Sanders celebrates 150th anniversary with new limited edition caramel
It's almost hard to imagine that in 1875, nearly 150 years ago to the day, the first Sanders shop opened in downtown Detroit in the Woodward and Gratiot area.
Generations of metro Detroiters grew up on Sanders ice cream sodas, cream puff hot fudge sundaes and, of course, delightful Bumpy Cake.
Now Sanders is gearing up to mark its 150th milestone with a community celebration in downtown Detroit. It will take place 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on May 15 in Cadillac Square, a significant spot for the candy maker because it's not far from that first location.
Sanders will be giving the community a taste of a limited-edition sweet treat: Sanders Birthday Cake White Chocolate Sea Salt Caramels. It will also be serving ice cream topped with classic Sanders Hot Fudge or Caramel toppings. The company said its new caramels are made at its facility in Clinton Township and will soon be available at retailers, including Meijer stores.
Sanders has grown into a national brand and is owned by snack and treat maker Second Nature Brands, based in Madison Heights. Second Nature Brands is also the parent company of Kar's Nuts, which bought Morley Candy in 2018. Morley owned Sanders at the time.
At one time, there were 57 Sanders retail stores in the Great Lakes region, according to the Sanders website. Two Sanders stores still operate in metro Detroit, one in Clinton Township and the other in Rochester, where you can buy many of its confections and those of Second Nature Brands. There is also a Sanders store on Mackinac Island.

UK's first KFC marks 60th birthday celebrations
Celebrations have taken place to mark 60 years since the first KFC fast food restaurant opened in a UK high street. The famous fried chicken chain marked its diamond anniversary with a pop-up event in Preston's Flag Market featuring memorabilia, a history film and a range of local food producers. Colonel Harland Sanders was an entrepreneur who began selling fried chicken from his roadside restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky, during the Great Depression. UK businessmen Harry Latham and Raymond Allen then worked under the supervision of their friend the colonel to bring the franchise to the UK. Allen was said to have possessed a handwritten copy of the restaurant's secret recipe of 11 herbs and spices, which it has declined to make public to this day. Detroit Lions signing Trystan Colon as insurance with Frank Ragnow retiring: Report
It didn't take long for the Detroit Lions to find a backup plan at center. According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Lions have signed offensive lineman Trystan Colon to a one-year deal. Colon, 27, has played in 51 NFL games for two teams over five seasons, most recently for the Arizona Cardinals in 2024. He was undrafted out of Missouri in 2020. Colon, formerly known as Colon-Castillo, played in all 17 games for the Cardinals in 2024, making a career-high seven starts. He has made four career starts at center, all with the Baltimore Ravens from 2020-22, and 11 starts at right guard from 2023-24 with the Cardinals. The signing follows the retirement of longtime Lions center Frank Ragnow, who announced his retirement via Instagram on Monday. Report: Shedeur Sanders has path to winning Browns QB competition
Shedeur Sanders might've tumbled down the draft board, but he could be flying up the Cleveland Browns' quarterback depth chart. The former Colorado quarterback's draft slide ended when the Browns selected him in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft with the 144th overall pick. Players taken that late don't typically have a great success rate at becoming starters in the pros, but Sanders isn't your average Day 3 pick. Advertisement Some have speculated Sanders slid because of his family, attitude or talent. Others have noted that he doesn't figure to be a starting quarterback, which makes the noise surrounding his presence on a team an unnecessary distraction. Regardless, Sanders is in camp with the Browns. On a team without a clear starting quarterback atop the depth chart, that means it's a wide-open competition – one that the fifth-rounder has a path to winning, according to ESPN's Kimberley A. Martin. "Listen, in that building, there are people who believe that Shedeur can 100 percent be the starter of this football team," Martin said on ESPN's "Get Up" on Wednesday. "You said it's incumbent upon the Browns to put him in the situation, it's also incumbent upon Shedeur to do the work, which, talking to people in that building, they've said he is soaking up everything like a sponge." To do so, Sanders will have to surpass Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and fellow 2025 draft pick Dillon Gabriel on the depth chart. Advertisement That doesn't mean he isn't taking every opportunity to learn from the veteran Flacco, however. "In the QB rooms, talking to Flacco, wanting to learn, and also, let's not forget, Dillon Gabriel, spent a lot of time talking about Shedeur, but Dillon Gabriel's a guy who was drafted in the third," Martin said. "One source said to me, he is everything you want in a quarterback, he's just small. If he were a little taller, a lot of people would be looking at Dillon Gabriel a little differently, at least that's how they feel in their building. So they have a very interesting quarterback situation, and Shedeur has a path." Gabriel, who was selected two rounds earlier than Sanders, illustrates the problem for the Colorado prospect. As ESPN's Peter Schrager pointed out during the segment, Sanders likely won't have the same amount of reps in practice as the other quarterbacks on the roster. With less room for error, it presents a challenge for the rookie. Regardless, he is still expected to be on the roster, barring something unforeseen.
