Springfield Department of Public Works prepares for several inches of snow
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Springfield Department of Public Works spent Saturday preparing for several inches of snowfall.
There are many parking bans in western Massachusetts taking place this weekend, a reminder that this will help workers plow roads quicker and keep those out on the roads safer.
Western Massachusetts residents stock up for weekend storm
In Springfield, the DPW will be hitting the roads all weekend long. On Sunday, workers were seen loading their trucks with salt, hoping to prepare the roads hours before snowfall.
The Springfield DPW said that drivers should avoid parking on the even side of streets through 7:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, and avoid parking on odd sides of streets from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Similar bans are also in effect from Pittsfield to Palmer. Locals are taking the time to prepare for the storm in different ways.
'If the snow isn't bad tomorrow, I'll probably head out to party,' said Christopher Torres of Westfield .
'My next stop is ACE,' said another local resident.
The city of Springfield said on Saturday that it expects to plow more than 800 streets during the storm. Right now they have 94 private contractors, and need a total of 150.
Those who want to stay up to date on the Springfield DPW's plowing operations can check their snow map, which is updated every two to three hours.

Rich Tettemer to Retire from WWLP in Massachusetts After 37 Years
WWLP anchor Rich Tettemer is retiring after 37 years at the Springfield, Massachusetts NBC affiliate. He started his career as a videotape editor at WFLA in Tampa, Florida in 1984 and went on to become a weekend sports anchor at KODE in Joplin, Missouri. Tettemer joined WWLP on Patriots Day, April 18, 1988 with the with both the Boston Marathon and the Red Sox morning game. He was named a morning anchor on October 16, 2006, after 18 and a half years on the sports desk and has been the morning news anchor for another 18 and a half years. Below, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, along with his colleagues said goodbye to Tettemer. Tettemer will be replaced by reporter Julia O'Keefe. She'll join Kaelee Collins on Monday. Last week, weather reporter Jack Wu said he was leaving the station for a job in West Palm Beach, Florida.
