New driving test centre approved in Reading after previous closure
The plan shows the DVSA occupying Suite A of the building, which is on the ground floor.The office will be staffed by five examiners and one manager. Each examiner can conduct up to seven tests per day, meaning 35 tests can be taken on a typical day.There would also be the capacity to have a total of 12 examiners working from the site in the future.The site provides 10 parking spaces, with five additional spaces being leased by the DVSA at the Holiday Inn, a six-minute walk from Pacific House.The DVSA has argued it needs to address a "backlog" of tests after it predicted around a million tests had been missed due to the coronavirus pandemic.Its letter states: "The backlog of driving tests, coupled with increased demand, has subsequently meant that there has been a continued post-pandemic surge in people seeking to complete their driving tests."There are insufficient test slots to meet the demand."It added: "Learners are often left unable to find an available test for months in advance and are resorting to booking tests in areas of the UK miles away from their home."The DVSA is therefore actively and urgently working to invest in new test centres to address the backlog."

Dungeness landlod 'overwhelmed' by support after car damages pub
The owner of a Kent pub damaged when a car crashed into it has described the help he has received in rebuilding it as "totally amazing".The Pilot Inn in Dungeness was hit by a vehicle in the early hours of 10 pub has been able to stay partially open but has been fully restored in time for the August bank holiday weekend.A man has been charged with drink driving and driving while unfit and is due to appear in court next week. Owner Niko Miaoulis said: "A huge thank you to all of our staff, customers, friends, family, that have helped, even just through good wishes in the past couple of weeks, it's totally amazing."I'm overwhelmed by the generosity and the goodness in people. Even this morning we ran out of varnish, and we went to the manufacturers in New Romney, they took us into the factory and gave us it for free." He added that he initially feared for the future of the pub."We thought, 'oh my God, how are we ever going to fulfil the business that we need to?'."This is our busiest period to carry us through the winter. How can we possibly get this back up and running again? And we did, 10 days and it's back up and running."Joiner and family friend Bradley Sullivan, from Folkestone, has been working on the restoration."We've been doing 16-hour days, and we've had to tie that in with the running of the restaurant, so it's been very tricky," he said."I've known the Miaoulis family for 30 years and I really felt for them because this is their passion. They've put so much effort into it, it was horrible to see what happened."There's a good community around here, we've had some great help."

Porsche convoy parks up for boss's Bury St Edmunds funeral
A convoy of 60 luxury Porsches were driven to the funeral of a popular Reason, who ran Reason Porsche in Crowfield, near Ipswich, died with motor neurone disease on 19 had asked friends if they would honour him with the convoy and Emma Jackson, regional organiser for Porsche Club Great Britain, helped ensure his wishes came true at the funeral in Bury St Edmunds."When you met Adam, you were instant friends, you felt like you had known him for a long time," said Mrs Jackson. "He was just the warmest person, and I think we have done him proud." About 450 people turned out to Mr Reason's funeral.A JustGiving page was set up in his memory to raise money for St Elizabeth Hospice in Ipswich who supported him and his family. Jon Turner, who said he had been friends with Mr Reason for about 30 years, said: "It was a marvellous service full of love for a man who deserved all of that love." Alison Garnham, from Ipswich, who is part of the Porsche club, said buying a car from Mr Reason had helped with her anxiety and "changed my life"."We are now on our second [car] from Adam's garage, and have new friends - a new social life," she about the convoy, she said: "It just goes to show how special of a man he was and how we all love his family."There is nowhere else I would be today."
