West Sussex: VR project set up for library service's 100th year
The VR experience has been designed to be gentle, accessible and have a picture-book quality, the service said."They are not designed to be realistic or historically accurate. Instead, they are fictional worlds with a connection to West Sussex," the spokesperson added.The VR headsets will be available at all 36 libraries in West Sussex throughout the year, with exact dates available on the library service website.
West Sussex county councillor Duncan Crow said the libraries were an integral part of the community, providing valuable services which support residents."The centenary year will highlight the past, present and future of West Sussex libraries – our proud history, thriving present, and a look to the exciting future, especially digital innovations like VR," he said.The VR project has been financed by National Lottery funding awarded by Arts Council England.

Repeat offender among 112 arrested in anti-drug operation in Kuala Lumpur, says AADK
KUALA LUMPUR: A 62-year-old drug addict, who has been arrested more than 10 times and previously received six strokes of the rotan, was caught once again during an anti-drug operation here on Tuesday (Aug 19). The man, who claimed to have repented, admitted that he has been struggling with addiction for four decades. "I started using drugs when I was 22. I tried to quit but I couldn't because of the cravings," he said when met after his arrest at an abandoned construction site in the city. He was among 112 individuals detained in Ops Perdana conducted by the National Anti-Drugs Agency from midnight. National Anti-Drugs Agency director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh said initial screening found all those arrested, including five women aged between 19 and 61, tested positive for drugs. "Out of the total, 77 tested positive for methamphetamine (syabu), 20 for heroin, eight for cannabis and five for benzodiazepines," he told reporters. All those arrested are being investigated under the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983. Ruslin said 20 individuals were detained at the abandoned construction site, known among addicts as a 'port imbi.' "The location has been active since 2023, with addicts frequenting the spot between 6am and 10am, and again between 5pm and 7pm. On average, 15 to 30 addicts are present at one time. It is also used as a drug-purchasing point for addicts before or after work," he said. The large-scale operation involved 23 National Anti-Drugs Agency officers and 54 personnel targeting high-risk areas including open drug hangouts and People's Housing Projects. Ruslin said the main goal was to identify drug users for treatment and rehabilitation, either through institutional or community-based programmes. "At the same time, this operation aims to cut off drug supply networks, reduce demand, and dismantle active drug dens, especially in high-risk areas," he added. Ruslin stressed that the National Anti-Drugs Agency will continue intensive enforcement.

Ringgit opens flat against US$ on cautious sentiment
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened flat against the US dollar on Wednesday, amid cautious market sentiments ahead of the United States (US) Federal Reserve (Fed) chair, Jerome Powell's Jackson Hole speech this Friday. At 8 am, the local note stood at 4.2215/2420 from yesterday's close of 4.2215/2255. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the US Dollar Index (DXY) fluctuated from a low of 97.95 to a high of 98.29 points, with traders adopting a cautious stance ahead of Powell's speech. "Market participants are searching for clues on the Fed's stance on monetary policy and how it will shape their decision in the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee meeting on Sept 16-17. "Markets are pricing higher odds for a 25 basis points (bps) cut. As such, the two- and 10-year US Treasury yield slid by two bps and four bps to close at 3.75 per cent and 4.30 per cent, respectively," he told Bernama. The Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium will be held on Aug 21-23, with the theme of "Labour Markets in Transition: Demographics, Productivity and Macroeconomic Policy". Yesterday, the ringgit closed at RM4.2235, easing by 0.04 per cent versus the greenback. As such, Mohd Afzanizam expects the ringgit to maintain its trajectory between RM4.22 and RM4.23 today. The ringgit opened higher against a basket of major currencies, with the exception of the Japanese yen, where it eased to 2.8578/8718 from Tuesday's close of 2.8572/8601. It gained against the British pound to 5.6923/7199 from 5.7066/7120 yesterday and rose vis-à-vis the euro to 4.9147/9385 from 4.9307/9354 previously. At the same time, the local note traded mixed against other ASEAN currencies. It gained versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2844/3007 from 3.2901/2935 at Tuesday's close and strengthened against the Thai baht to 12.9498/13.0195 from 12.9848/13.0027 yesterday. The ringgit was flat vis-à-vis the Philippines' peso at 7.39/7.43 from yesterday's 7.39/7.40, as well as against the Indonesian rupiah, where it stood at 259.8/261.2 from 259.8/260.2 on Tuesday. - Bernama

Cabinet to discuss proposed cyberbullying tribunal on Friday, says PM
PUTRAJAYA: The setting up of a proposed cyberbullying tribunal will be brought to the coming Cabinet meeting this Friday (Aug 22), says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. "The proposal will be discussed at the Cabinet meeting," the Prime Minister told reporters after attending the Finance Ministry's monthly gathering here on Wednesday (Aug 20). On Tuesday (Aug 19), Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said that the government is also studying the possibility of establishing a cyberbullying tribunal and an e-Safety Commissioner. She said this is to ensure faster remedies for victims, rehabilitation for offenders and stronger digital safety education, especially for children. The proposal, she added, would be handled by the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister's Department. The proposal comes following the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir, 13, who was found unconscious in a drain at 4am on July 16 near her school hostel in Papar, Sabah. She was pronounced dead at Hospital Queen Elizabeth on July 17. Five teenagers are expected to be charged under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code related to bullying only and not causing the death of the 13-year-old girl.
