Salt Lake City Gets 3 New Flags Amid Ban of LGBTQ Flags

Salt Lake City has adopted three new flags in an attempt to skirt around the city's ban on flying the LGBTQ+ flag and others at public state buildings.
On Tuesday, the Salt Lake City Council adopted the three new flags in a formal meeting. The three flags are versions of Salt Lake City's official flag featuring a sego lily. There is the Sego Celebration Flag, which represents Juneteenth; the Sego Belonging Flag, representing LGBTQIA residents; and the Sego Visibility Flag, for transgender residents.
Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall said the flags are 'powerful symbols representing' the city's values.
'I want all Salt Lakers to look up at these flags and be reminded that we value diversity, equity and inclusion—leaving no doubt that we are united as a city and people, moving forward together,' Mendenhall said in a news release.
Earlier this year, Utah banned LGBTQ flags from being displayed in public schools or government buildings. LGBTQ advocates called it 'government overreach at its worst' and said the law strips the right to support and affirm diverse communities.
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox (R) allowed the bill to go into law even though he had 'serious concerns' about it. In a letter addressed to Utah legislators, Cox wrote that the bill focuses too much on flags alone and does little to prevent other displays, like posters, signs, etc.
'To those legislators who supported this bill, I'm sure it will not fix what you are trying to fix,' Cox wrote in a letter.
Salt Lake City Council chair Chris Wharton praised the three new flags.
'Like other civic symbols, these flags reflect our shared humanity and the values that help everyone feel they belong—no matter their background, orientation or beliefs,' Wharton said in a statement. 'While the state has restricted which flags public buildings can fly, I'm glad we can still uphold our community's values within the law.'

Under Washington's 'Home Rule Act,' the president can only take authority over the local police department for up to 30 days without the approval of lawmakers. 'And we're going to be asking for an extension on that, long-term extensions, because you can't have 30 days. Thirty days is, that's, by the time you do it — we're going to have this in good shape,' he said, adding, 'We're going to do this very quickly, but we're going to want extensions.' 'I don't want to call a national emergency. If I have to, I will. But I think the Republicans in Congress will approve this pretty much unanimously,' the president added. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) pushed back on the sentiment, arguing that Democrats would not go along with Trump's request. 'No f‑‑‑ing way,' Schumer told podcaster Aaron Parnas. 'We'll fight him tooth and nail. 'He needs to get Congress to approve it, and not only are we not going to approve it, but there are some Republicans who don't like either,' he added. Other Democrats, including local authorities, have also criticized the administration's efforts as 'unprecedented' and 'unnecessary,' citing data showing that crime in the district is declining. In letter to Putin, US first lady asks him to consider the children in push to end war in Ukraine
WASHINGTON -- WASHINGTON (AP) — Melania Trump took the unique step of crafting a letter that calls for peace in Ukraine, having her husband President Donald Trump hand-deliver it to Russian President Vladimir Putin during their Friday meeting in Alaska. The letter did not specifically name Ukraine, which Putin's forces invaded in 2022, but beseeched him to think of children and 'an innocence which stands above geography, government, and ideology.' Nor did the American first lady discuss the fighting other than to say to Putin that he could 'singlehandedly restore' the 'melodic laughter' of children who have been caught in the conflict. 'In protecting the innocence of these children, you will do more than serve Russia alone — you serve humanity itself,' she wrote on White House stationery. A copy of the letter was first obtained by Fox News Digital and later posted on social media by supporters of the U.S. president, including Attorney General Pam Bondi. The first lady said that Putin could help these children with the stroke of a pen. Putin's invasion of Ukraine has resulted in Russia taking Ukrainian children out of their country so that they can be raised as Russian. The Associated Press documented the grabbing of Ukrainian children in 2022, after which the International Criminal Court said it had issued an arrest warrant for Putin for war crimes, accusing him of personal responsibility for the abductions of children from Ukraine.

NJ ‘Moms for Liberty' leader claims Girl Scouts fired her for not promoting Pride Month activism
A New Jersey Girl Scout troop leader who was fired by the renowned youth organization claimed she was let go for not bringing her group to LGBTQ+ events during Pride Month. Alexandra Bougher, a 45-year-old Moms for Liberty chapter chair in Bergen County, was released by two members of Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey during a phone call on Wednesday, she said. 3 Alexandra Boughter, 45, concluded she was removed from the Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey for sharing anti-LBGTQ+ stances online. She said that her daughter was also removed from the scouts as part of her own excommunication. She independently concluded that the entire ordeal had to do with a comment she shared in June responding to a post on the Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey's social media celebrating Pride Month.
