The duo found themselves under fire from Venetians over their nuptial arrangements, prompting them to change one of their original plush venues against the backdrop of escalating global tensions amid the Iranian-Israeli/U.S. conflict.
Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez shared a kiss in Venice as they headed to their star-studded wedding party.
Initially planning a ritzy bash at Scuola Grande della Misericordia, they've since relocated the celebration to a different spot in the Arsenale district, yet this move hasn't silenced the local uproar. The couple's extravagant $48M wedding has drawn the ire of residents.
Venice's iconic scenery has been increasingly marred by anti-Bezos sentiment leading up to the event, with banners and stickers declaring "No Space for Bezos," and even historical treasures like the Rialto Bridge and St. Mark's Square have turned into stages for dissent. People Magazine captured the mood, noting that protestors have expanded their complaints, urging the Amazon tycoon to "pay more taxes."
Greenpeace made waves in St. Mark's Square by spreading out a humongous banner depicting a chuckling Bezos paired with the words, "If you can rent Venice for your wedding you can pay more tax."
The environmental group shared on Instagram a clip of the banner alongside the statement, "Jeff Bezos pays his staff poverty wages and dodges tax. No wonder he can afford to shut down half of Venice for his wedding this week. Tax billionaires NOW."
While residents expressed concern about the nuptial festivities potentially causing a ruckus, city authorities reassured the populace that usual taxi and waterborne transit services would not be interrupted. Additionally, they verified only 30 of the 280 water taxis are reserved, with just a select few hotels being utilized.
Moreover, the city issued a communiqué underscoring its adeptness at orchestrating sizable events.
"The city is fully accustomed to hosting high-profile events of this nature and scale, including other celebrity weddings, international summits such as the G7 and G20, as well as traditional events like the Festa del Redentore and the Venice Biennale," the city administration declared.
The communique went on to stress, "The celebrations, attended by 250 guests, will blend into the daily rhythm of a city that, with dignity and respect, welcomes thousands of visitors from around the world while safeguarding the quality of life for its residents, workers and students."
