Arsenal tifo criticism: Are British clubs behind Europe with fan banners?
The Emirates' atmosphere was hailed as among the best in the stadium's history for Arsenal's Champions League quarter-final at home to Real Madrid, so there were high expectations for Tuesday's semi-final against Paris St-Germain.A fourth-minute goal for the away side punctured that, but Arsenal's tifo display also fell flat.On social media, rival fans mocked the giant red flag with a white cannon, while some Gunners supporters also expressed their disappointment at what was unveiled. It was the club's first Champions League semi-final appearance since 2009, so fans wanted something befitting the occasion.Manager Mikel Arteta described the game as "one of the biggest in 19 years" in his pre-match news conference. However, what was delivered did not quite fit the bill.
Arsenal's cannon backfires
Arsenal fan group Ashburton Army raised more than £12,000 and offered to pay for their own personalised tifo with many different designs suggested to the club.On 24 April, they posted an update saying: "As the tifo has been rejected by the club, we will refund people for it."BBC Sport has been told that Arsenal were unable to accept the proposal because of the short timeframe between games. What they used was a simple large red flag featuring the club's cannon emblem in white as the centrepiece. This hung from the roof of the North Bank Stand, while another smaller banner was held by fans in the East Stand with the words "make it happen" printed across it - a pre-match message that Arteta had given to his players. Those two displays were added to by fireworks and pyrotechnics, but they were far from anything out of the ordinary. One fan posted on X: "I expected a very beautiful tifo from Arsenal only to discover this? It looks like Fifa career mode."Another claimed: "I think this may be the most commonly agreed worst tifo of all time given the circumstances."While a third said: "Arsenal turned down the fans' tifo design request to produce this monstrosity. Champions League semi-final and this was the best they could come up with? So disappointed."According to former England striker Wayne Rooney, working as a TV pundit, the atmosphere at the Emirates on Tuesday was different to the Real Madrid game. Before that match, supporters in each block of the stadium held up red and white cards above their heads."For Arsenal, I was a bit disappointed with how they played, disappointed with the fans as well," Rooney told Amazon Prime."I thought tonight they were a bit subdued, almost like an anti-climax that they beat Real Madrid and were going to walk into the final and win the competition."
'A missed opportunity to do something amazing' - What Arsenal fans have said
Arsenal fan writer Laura Kirk: "One of the fan groups Ashburton Army had raised some money for a tifo which was ultimately rejected by the club, I imagine because the designs were not in keeping with the club's brand but the club haven't actually said anything. "Arsenal have put a lot of effort into creating an atmosphere that matches the size of the game, which worked brilliantly for Real Madrid, but the tifo they went with yesterday, literally just a cannon on a red background, felt a bit flat. "In comparison with what we see elsewhere in Europe, like the one Real Madrid had against us last week, it just felt like a massively missed opportunity to do something amazing."Oli Price-Bates from The Fresh Arsenal Podcast: "The tifo from the club was certainly a bit underwhelming. The occasion deserved more from the club to help with the atmosphere and fan engagement. "Certainly if Arsenal get to this stage again, they need to be better prepared and involve the fans in the process, not just in tifos but the wider experience and build-up for the match. "Hopefully we won't wait so long for another semi-final and the club will be better prepared to make more impact."Broadcaster and Arsenal fan Harry Symeou: "I think the fans were hoping to see something with a bit more of a wow factor. Given there was lots of talk online with regards to some more elaborate, striking designs - you can understand why some felt underwhelmed."Tifos on the continent tend to be more creative and really can set the scene ahead of a huge occasion. Fan groups, in particular those known as 'ultras' normally have a big input - leading to a higher rate of fan satisfaction. But this is something we don't do well enough in English football generally. If as a club, you're going to take it upon yourselves to both plan and execute such displays, you've got to deliver something with far more imagination than that."
Are English clubs behind the rest of Europe with their tifo game?
On the whole? Probably. And it's certainly not just Arsenal who have fallen short in the department.West Ham United tried their hand at one against the Gunners during this season's Premier League fixture at the London Stadium. It was a simple display of their logo in the middle of the date they were founded - unfortunately for them though, the date looked like it read 1695 rather than 1895.Away from the gaffes though, English clubs have shown in recent times that it can be done when executed correctly. Aston Villa had impressive displays at Villa Park during their Champions League campaign, while Crystal Palace are certainly on the path of a team that get it "right" when it comes to tifos. The two even had their own battle pre-match in the stands before their FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.Villa unveiled three lions at their end before Palace displayed an impressive red and blue wall with an image of a child in front of an FA Cup lofted above the words "take my hand, take my whole life too."Manchester United have also had some creative designs before their Europa League fixtures, while Newcastle United have been impressive throughout the season with their unique displays.

Arsenal dealt blow as dream target Nico Williams responds to transfer approach
Arsenal have seen their chances of signing Athletic Bilbao superstar Nico Williams take a hit after the winger was reported to have confirmed interest in a move elsewhere Nico Williams has told Bayern Munich he is open to joining them in a blow to Arsenal hopes. Mikel Arteta is a huge fan of the Athletic Bilbao winger and any plan to get a deal over the line has now only been made more difficult. Vincent Kompany's side have entered the running to land the star with Bayern chiefs Max Eberl and Christoph Freund holding talks with Williams' representatives. The Bundesliga giants have already missed out on Florian Wirtz this summer and have turned their attention to the Spain international, according to Sky Germany. Bayern are set to see space open up in their squad with the exit of Leroy Sane. The former Manchester City ace knocked back a move to the Saudi Pro League but travelled to Turkey on Wednesday ahead of a switch to Galatasaray on a free transfer. To be successful, Bayern will need to stump up Williams' €58 million (£48.1m) release clause to prise him away from Bilbao. But it is the Basque star's salary that could prove most prohibitive. Mirror Football understands that the 22-year-old wants to be paid more than £300,000-a-week to make him one of the bigger earners in Europe. That figure itself made a move difficult for Arsenal, while Barcelona, who have also been heavily linked with Williams, saw their plans to sign the player damaged by the demands. Athletic Bilbao have not given up hope of retaining their talisman's services either however. Reports in Spain claim that the La Liga side will offer an increase in salary and an immediate release clause should he extend his deal until 2027. After seeing Williams turn down multiple transfers away from the club in the past, the Basque side do not think its implausible to happen again. Athletic will hope their qualification for the Champions League proves helpful to their cause. Williams finished this season with 11 goals and seven assists for Bilbao after truly breaking out in 2024 with an impressive campaign as Spain won the Euros. Arsenal have long admired the winger but have been less keen to take on his wage demands. His current club are adamant they want to retain Williams' services over cashing in however. "I believe we have a winning and interesting project for everyone, and Nico is part of that project, just like many other players," Bilbao president Jon Uriarte told Spanish outlet El Correo. "The project becomes easier if we keep our players - and I believe Nico and the rest of the squad have a very exciting year ahead." Speaking after he decided to remain with Bilbao last summer, Williams said: 'Many teams want you, I've had many offers to do things that another player would have done, but I'm happy here, Bilbao is my home. My heart is red and white." Though he hinted that may be a temporary situation when he added: "I had a talk with my parents and my brother, and we decided it was best to stay for another year.'

Viktor Gyokeres 'picks out of Arsenal and Man Utd' as agent holds transfer talks
Sporting CP sensation Viktor Gyokeres has reportedly decided on his preferred Premier League destination between Arsenal and Manchester United as his agent enters discussions The agent of Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres has reportedly taken a giant leap towards landing his client a Premier League transfer. And it isn't good news for Manchester United fans after the player's agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, is understood to have met with Arsenal's owners. Things have seemingly taken a sour turn in Lisbon very quickly after it emerged Gyokeres was not happy with Sporting, where he has become an icon in two seasons. It's alleged the Sweden striker was under the impression a 'gentleman's agreement' would allow him to leave for around £59million this summer. But after scoring 97 times in 102 appearances for the Lions, it seems Sporting are intent on receiving the full value of his £85m release clause if he's to leave. And it's led to claims Gyokeres will go on strike if needed in order to force through a dream move this summer. CNN Portugal reported Cetinkaya met with Arsenal's owners on Wednesday in an effort to expedite a deal. The Gunners reportedly sent a delegation to Lisbon last month to discuss a potential move for Sporting's prolific frontman. The update suggests talks between the two parties are "very advanced." And although Arsenal's representatives have met with Sporting in the past, it's understood matters are now looking more formal ahead of a potential deal being struck. It's also suggested that a move to the Emirates Stadium has been Gyokeres' preference "from the very beginning." And it could mean United boss Ruben Amorim, the man who brought him to Portugal from Coventry City, is left out in the cold. Gyokeres' inner circle have already made it clear they want him to remain in Lisbon. The player's uncle, Chris, revealed at the Taca de Portugal final, where Gyokeres forced extra time before lifting the title, that the family encouraged their star to stick in his current surroundings. When asked if the family felt a connection to Lisbon, he told "Yes, very much. Yesterday at dinner, we decided that he has to stay." Not only that, but Gyokeres' girlfriend, Ines Aguiar, has also campaigned for him to stick around. According to A Bola, she "promised" to do her utmost to convince him to commit to a third season with Sporting despite the swell of transfer interest. Gyokeres recently ruled out a return to his home nation and told Swedish Vogue: "After living in a warm country, it would be difficult. In Sweden, people work hard during the week and only socialize on the weekends. Here there is more life during the week. They have dinners with friends, a glass of wine on Monday. I like that." Mikel Arteta's side may have left United in their wake after seemingly moving ahead in discussions. Arsenal appear to be intent on making up for last year's shortcomings by signing an elite striker this summer. Injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus left the club short last season despite calls to add to their forward department. And it left new signing Mikel Merino with the responsibility of leading the line for much of this season. The Spaniard did well in his makeshift role and scored 10 goals between January and May. However, the Gunners are under no illusion that a more natural talent is required up top, and the benefit of offering Champions League football is a major advantage over United. The same can be said for United after a record-low finish of 15th in the Premier League. The likes of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have failed to set the world alight as hoped at Old Trafford, with Amorim now seeking to make his own mark on the squad. Gyokeres, 27, isn't the only forward target believed to be on Arsenal's radar. The club has been closely linked with RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko this summer, with the club's hierarchy seemingly keen on the Slovenia international. However, recent developments would suggest Gyokeres remains the preferred pick if the Gunners get their way. And it may mean United are left devastated as a direct rival hoovers up one of the most coveted talents on the market.

Chelsea slammed for selling 'unbelievable' player to Arsenal
Chelsea have been warned they are making a mistake selling Kepa Arrizabalaga to Premier League rivals Arsenal. Mikel Arteta is set to welcome the 30-year-old to Arsenal in the coming days as he looks for a new back-up goalkeeper. Loan signing Neto performed that role for the Gunners last season but struggled in his one and only appearance and has now returned to Bournemouth. Arsenal believe Kepa can be a capable deputy to Raya next season and have reportedly agreed a £5m deal with London rivals Chelsea. Chelsea spent £72m on Kepa in 2018 – making him the most expensive goalkeeper in history – but the Spain international struggled at Stamford Bridge before losing his place in the team. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. Despite Kepa returning to Chelsea from his season-long loan at Bournemouth, the Blues have expressed interest in signing a new shot-stopper this summer and clearly do not rate the soon-to-be Arsenal player. But former Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips has questioned the decision to sell Kepa to Arsenal following his 'unbelievable' season on the south coast. Wright-Phillips even believes Kepa could have emerged as Chelsea's No. 1 once more, saving the club potentially millions this summer. 'I'm confused. I don't understand,' Wright-Phillips told Betway when asked abut Kepa's imminent move to the Emirates Stadium. 'It's like nobody's been watching Kepa this season. He's been unbelievable. He is part of the reason why Bournemouth finished where they finished. Arsenal hero Ray Parlour believes Kepa should reject a summer move to his beloved Gunners. 'It's all on whether he wants to play, he's not going to play at Arsenal is he? 'He's going to be the No.2, do you want to be No.2? He's obviously been No.1 at Bournemouth. If you're Arsenal, you want to buy him because he's a great No.2 to have. 'But if you're Kepa, you want to play unless you're happy to sit on the bench but if I was a keeper at his age I'd want to play because you'll regret it once you finish.' Speaking to talkSPORT 'The defence was outstanding, but Kepa was unbelievable, as well, I thought. 'I assumed while the season was going on that Chelsea didn't need to buy a goalkeeper because Kepa was going back anyway, but that isn't to be the case. 'You can have as good a goalkeeper as you want, but if you're still going to make the same mistakes in defence, your goalkeeper is still going to concede. 'That's just the fact of the matter. [Liverpool goalkeeper] Alisson pulls off amazing saves when he's needed. Half the time he has to pull off a save, it's not forced errors. 'So if Chelsea can get their defence like that, where they're not making him make unnecessary saves he shouldn't have to make, then I think Kepa is your man to keep. You don't need to forage around. 'Most managers now are looking for goalkeepers that are good with their feet. I think Kepa's alright with his feet, but he might not be at the level they want him to be. More Trending 'But for me, it's a real strange one.' Chelsea are looking to sign a new goalkeeper following Robert Sanchez's inconsistent season at Stamford Bridge. The Blues were in advanced talks to sign France's No. 1 Mike Maignan from AC Milan but the deal collapsed earlier this week, with Chelsea unwilling to match the Serie A club's valuation. Chelsea have multiple goalkeepers on their books but Sanchez has flattered to deceive between the sticks and Dorde Petrovic is set to leave in the pursuit of more game-time.
